Did you see his hands on that close up? Must be swell to masturbate with zero effort.

I was put off by the "this is a one of a kind piece" comment. It may be unique, but there are hundreds of them sitting in piles at antique shops all over the world.

Were it Edison's first recording it might be special, but no museum is gonna let that guy's sweaty shaky hands anywhere near it.

May have been the only spool with that particular recording, but not the only spool.

Still, was hoping for Patrick with a sledge.

Submitter, the "thingamajigger" is an Edison Phonograph Cylinder. They are the orignial form of records, though flat disc records came along shortly after.

Disc records won out over cylinders because Columbia Records (they were a phonograph maker back then too) figured out that a flat disc could hold recordings on both sides, versus a single recording per cylinder. They sold better as a result (more music for the same money) so the disc format won out.

Also love how the "expert" on the program didn't know how to hold an Edison cylinder. ALWAYS hold them with your fingers from the inside of the cylinder, not on the outside like he was doing. Had he been holding the cylinder properly he wouldn't have broken it.

G4 TV sucks!

pjbreeze 2007-01-28 10:22:22 AM
Oops. He just destroyed a priceless one of a kind recording, or it was a factory reject. Excuse me, while I accidentally put my elbow thru this Picasso that I had just bought.

Someone needs to sock that kid's mouth shut.

"You done with that? *snort*"

That annoying, nasal voiced host somewhat ruined it for me. But with the old guy's tremor, it was bound to happen

So the camera goes close up and you see him squeeze down on the cylinder to break it....

/And yes. Techtv as ghey4 tv sucks so much .
//I just locked it out when the station was sold way back when.

I remember reading an article somewhere that G4, or whatever the fark it's called now, is the lowest rated basic cable channel. There are shopping networks that have higher ratings.

Post of the day. Outstanding. Take a bow.

I loved Tech TV. It had intelligent content and real shows about cool new technology. Now that it's G4, it's become the retarded stepchild of Spike TV. It has shows now like COPS, Cheaters (about following around people who are cheating on their SOs) and repeats of the man show.

The only show left from Tech TV is X-Play, but even that is far different than it used to be.

ubermensch 2007-01-28 02:40:59 PM
Technically, it was a one-of-a-kind. Maybe neofonz can back me up on this, but from what I can recall, they never, or rarely, copied those. What they'd do is set up 20 or 30 recorders in a room and have the band sit in the middle. They'd start recording, have the band play the song, then take the cylinder off and load up a blank one and start again. So each will have different sounds (not that you'd notice a huge difference on some) depending on how close the recorder was to the trumpet as opposed to the tuba.

Where's the one with the QVC guy who falls off the ladder?

jonthenewt 2007-01-28 02:48:35 PM
Oh man, it pissed me off so bad...3 months after I discovered Tech TV, they got sold to G4. It was so lame.

Speaking of QVC, the classic:

QVC host stabs self with sword (pops) (real but no blood)

Trik 2007-01-28 04:38:57 PM
ol' guys hands were shaking so bad I'm surprised the cylinder didn't fly off and hit a wall

Predmid 2007-01-28 04:40:41 PM
Hey...I have that sword.

/Well, shiat.
//$5 purchase at a fleamarket
///then sharpened to all hell with a grinder & files
////cuts through pineapple like buttah.

haineux 2007-01-28 06:05:25 PM
That sword BROKE IN HALF and then stabbed that guy. Sheesh.

You'd figure it'd at least not BREAK.

Premid, I'd not use that sword to cut air for fear of injury.

Now, if you want much of the old Tech TV content, you go online. Leo Laporte's Call For Help show is available online so you can see it out side of Canadian Cable TV. Other shows are now in some form on Leo's Twit.TV network.

It was an unreleased ABBA song. No loss. Unlike the blooper in which Geraldo Rivers accidentally tore an unused Woodstock ticket.

Rare but not one of a kind. I have an Edison Home Phonograph made in 1898. Lucky for me my hands don't shake that bad.
