What? Is he supposed to say "to jack off"?

The only time I ever said "jacking off" in response to a "what are you doing?" was when I was smoking in the basement when I was supposed to have quit already.

What I do is I go to the art books in the library and jerk off to those. It's so much easier than waiting in line for a computer.

Is it really so hard for the library to put in porn blockers on their computer systems? I thought that was standard practice in libraries anyways.

What happens if someone is accessing or even uploading child porn? Will the anti-religion people be upset that their tax dollars are being used to give access to religious materials.

I think libraries should use bootable operating systems like Knoppix or use VMWare to prevent the computers from being infected with viruses and become bots for spammers.

If some people think of porn as the text for their religion, Communion must be pretty interesting.

Would that make abstinance a sin?

A_Spaid_Is_A_Spaid: Is it really so hard for the library to put in porn blockers on their computer systems? I thought that was standard practice in libraries anyways.

1. No not hard at all. Libraries aren't here to block access to stuff, they're here to provide access. Additionally, filters block legitimate sites and thus require a lot of administration and massaging to get the filter dialed in.

2. No. Especially not college libraries. You may be thinking of that retarded CIPA law that congress passed. It just says that Schools who receive federal money for internet access can have that money taken away unless they use one of a handful of internet filter companies. I believe the authoritarians tried to force this on public libraries and failed.

There's a whole class on this issue in library school if you're interested.

no need.

I use a combination of software (DeepFreeze) to protect the system, protect the privacy of the individual, and provide the functionality that the majority of users expect.

as for switching to Mac. No thanks. Cloning a mac is a pain in the ass, everything costs extra (the campus has an agreement with Microsoft to provide Office, but only for PCs), and the students just don't use them.

I am quite amused as I have had this specific thought... one of our guards chased a perv out by offering him a paper towel to erm... "collect the evidence"

oh, yeah, that and that your username is "filter" That is what my library uses... not perfect but it helps...

/usually just gently reminds pervs that the library is a "family show"
//if you cannot afford "the internet" you can afford a magazine
/the resolution is better anyway...

"It filters the actual content of pages based on many methods including phrase matching, PICS filtering and URL filtering."

No farking thanks. This is more problematic than blocking sites. This is content filtering. So a user will be doing a legitimate search for something like "rectal bleeding" (my friend called me about this topic just yesterday) and the word "anal sex" will turn up in a study of the topic or in a page containing possible causes. This filter will then censor that page. Why is this worse? Because the user won't even know that the page is censored. So I (as the admin) can't even help the patron because they don't even know they need help.

This is how China keeps people from knowing about the Falun Gong and whatever else they want to keep the people in the dark about.

No thanks.

Please don't childproof the world.

The "world" is not for children.

The world is for grownups.

Please supervise your own children because it is not the government or society's job.

Sure, if I saw some kid playing with a handgun I'd take it away from them. But I wouldn't look to ban handguns. I'd look to have them removed from their parents for allowing them to play with a handgun.

When your children are grown up they can enjoy all the sex and drugs and booze and guns to their hearts content.

In the meantime, don't take them away from us grown ups who've waited to grow up so we could enjoy them.

Obviously I don't think anybody should fap at the library but they ought to be able to stock their brain with images for later, private fapping.

Shutting down of filtering internet access because "kids might see porn" is akin to shutting down streets because "kids might get hit by cars."

Why are you letting your kids play in the street unsupervised?

Why are you letting your kid surf the web unsupervised?

The only alternative would be to open "fapping only" rooms in libraries, or internet cafes just for porn surfing (and possible anonymous hookups and handjobs?) but the fundies always raise a stink about sex-based businesses opening in their "family-oriented" communities.

(Even though, it goes without saying, it is the men who live in those communities who patronize said businesses, not tourists bussed in from Osaka Japan.)

It's a real Sisyphean struggle the anti-sex crowd have on their hands: they're opposed to allowing men a dedicated outlet for getting their rocks off (prostitution, massage parlors, adult book stores, etc) yet act shocked and surprised when men do so in untoward, distasteful or harmful and illegal ways (fapping at the library, molesting, raping, etc.)

They carp about how sex should only occur in marriage but neglect to consider the millions of unmarried men or men trapped in sexless marriages or "straight" married men who like a little cock from time to time.

Can't have it both ways fundies.

If you allow your men to freely get off with a hooker they'd likely be less apt to try and get off with their stepdaughters.

On a side note, anybody have any data/stats about the rates of sexual assault in sexually uber-tolerant countries where porn and prostitution is un-judged and easy to get?

I'd garner that the rates of sex assaults in those countries is considerably lower than the rates in more sex-leery & guilt-laden countries like our own.

Ceiling cat is about to die...

By the way, I was working for a general access computer lab for a university, when our boss gave us a call saying a student claimed we were blocking pornogrophy on our macs.

We told him we not only don't have any software in the image capable of doing such, we weren't sure there was any such software at the time. (A few years back.) He told us to go check anyways.

Being that we both knew the mac image software inside and out, the only way we could really check was to go to a porn site. Only me and the other labop didn't know of any. He had a wife and kids, and I was never really into that stuff. So we thought, why not ask our NT sysadmin? He's sure to know of a few. We chuckled at the thought, and then went to playboy.com, it showed up, we closed it, and called our boss saying everything works fine.

Free speech... made for one of the more interesting days at work.

How can library be place to search for that kind of information? I just cut my vane with a knife, better run to library and google about it.
Anyway if you never installed that program and configured it you have no saying there.

Obligatory:

"Additionally, librarians can identify the enemies of the library system by smell: thieves, small children, politicians, tax payers, homeless people, teenagers, porn addicts and the elusive library masturbator. These enemies are vanquished typically with the famous "Shhh" or the newer phrase 'I'm calling the police.'"

1. how? because they have computers? if someone slices a vein or, even worse, an artery I doubt they will make it to the library. But someone who has black stool will absolutely go to the library to search for that information.

2. I work in a library. I have for 10 years. I am the systems guy for a major public university library. I have seen all types of content filters. I have installed all types of content filters, firewalls, proxy servers and any other iteration of network filtering you'd like to throw at me. In short, I am a professional library systems person. Which leads me to the following statement: I could give two farks what you think I should be allowed to talk about.

This makes no sense to me. We have pretty strict content blockers at my library, but occasionally people will say, "I really need to get to this website...." and I type in the override code. And then I kick them out for looking at porn.

It is one of the many, many wonderful parts of my job.
