Schmitt said he believes Josh Gilchrist was a collector of swords.

Obviously, it's time for Congress to pass strict sword control laws.

They got rid of bayonets already, and how many drive by bayonettings have been in the news lately?

They had a foreign exchange student living there too. That kid will have some stories to tell that'd curl your hair when he gets home.

Anyone who names their kid Rebekah needs a stabbing.

Is there a sword problem or are most sword attacks posted on FARK because they are tragically funny? Let's face it, a murder is a lot less tragic if a sword is involved.

Swords are just as effective as guns at close range, and they aren't regulated - at least not in the US. I think the UK was making noises about outlawing even large butcher knives.

Echnin 2007-01-27 07:17:41 PM
So that's what SD stands for, huh. Confused by the mother working in Minnesota I guess.

The injured officer, Dan Kight, 34, was treated at Huron Regional Medical Center and released. Schmitt said Kight's uniform was cut by the sword.

So, he needed treated at the hospital because his uniform got cut?

WTF?

Jument 2007-01-27 07:28:44 PM
Schmitt said the boy started swinging the sword and struck one of the officers several times before the others fired multiple shots and killed the attacker.

Wow. Sounds like the cops tried really hard not to off the stupid git.

Oh well. I'm going to go with the standard "Darwin wins" in this one.

I couldn't find a foreign exchange student among his MySpace friends. Well, except for a Danish guy who was there a year ago, strangely enough.

...

I hope the foreign exchange student is OK.

cops need to start travelling in groups of 12 or more if they are going to be judge, jury and executioner.

Wow, you can piece together that something was up by checking out all the comments, and following them to the people he Knew. Was he going out with Carrie Reed? From what I can tell he graduated to 'friends with benefits' and then she snubbed him, and then he went psycho with a sword...

MilesTeg 2007-01-27 08:13:09 PM
He looked a little thin and frail. Obviously not human or half-orc. He probably had a negative roll penalty with the longsword. A better weapon choice might have have been the dagger or shortbow. He might of had at least a 2D4 chance of taking out one of the police officers depending on his initiative roll.

garycarroll 2007-01-27 08:19:11 PM
Kitchenrat: cops need to start travelling in groups of 12 or more if they are going to be judge, jury and executioner."

From this I take it that you don't think shooting someone is justified just because they are actually hitting someone with a sword, after actually demonstrating they are capable of killing someone with said sword? I personally think that if there were ANY time shooting someone was a good idea, this would be it.

Under what circumstances (if any) would you think shooting is perhaps acceptable?

farkingatwork 2007-01-27 08:20:15 PM
I ganked him in wow and he said he was going to kill his mom and slit his wrists

tchau 2007-01-27 08:24:11 PM
you know, it's cool the police were defending themselves and I'm alright with the fact they killed him because he was attacking everything, but how hard is it not to shoot someone fatally (legs, or arm) to incapacitate them?

Gut instincts say kill the bastard, which they did, but would training officers to immobilize threats be worth it?

/never been in a situation were a stick man from South Dakota tried attacking me with a sword, so I don't know the Preassure's involved.

ass_double 2007-01-27 08:28:45 PM
tchau

You never aim to wound, a non lethal shot from a 9mm won't stop an attacker. You've never dealt with someone on PCP, or more common these days meth.

tiiger

Looks like something happened with reed, and this Amber girl is that girl that always tags along with your friends at partys, but is to needy. Really seems like he said goodbye to people and was acting wierd a day before.

garycarroll 2007-01-27 08:33:13 PM
tchau: "...but how hard is it not to shoot someone fatally (legs, or arm) to incapacitate them?"

It's actually very difficult, though you would not think so unless you have shot a pistol much.
If the guy would hold still and let you take careful aim at maybe ten feet, no problem... but then, you don't really need to shoot him at all unless he's moving around being dangerous, right? It's surprisingly hard to hit a moving target with a pistol, so you aim for the middle of the biggest part - and most shots still miss.
