Why did I watch that?

Was that real?

Croix9602 2007-01-25 10:33:15 PM
Dude has a bunch of other vids of him doing GH, too. Some including shots of his hands while playing.

I gotta respect someone with a TV that big in their mom's basement.

elwhoppo 2007-01-25 10:49:17 PM
Is REAL guitar that hard to play?

Croix9602 2007-01-25 10:52:07 PM
elwhoppo -

I don't think so. Not from what I've seen...lol

noit 2007-01-25 11:19:03 PM
Seems more like drumming then playing guitar.

noit 2007-01-25 11:21:38 PM
elwhoppo -

yeah, guitar is harder. You have to know where notes are and what they sound like. Plus pressing the metal strings farks up your finger tips, like they were blades. My fingertips are made of stiff leather.

jasonmicron 2007-01-25 11:25:55 PM
Misirlou really isn't that hard. It's just a lot of fast strumming.

MasonL87 2007-01-25 11:30:53 PM
Sweet Zombie Jesus!!!

/I'll take Frets on fire please
//Don't need a $70 peripheral

maybe so...but that looked damn cool watching him nail the song.

submitter: Guitar Hero

I was looking for 'Guitar Hero', But all I got was this lousy video.

Stupid Fat Hobbit 2007-01-26 12:27:51 AM
I just beat Misirlou on expert last week. I was the bit that starts at about 1:02 that kept giving me trouble. Plus, I've never really got the hang of double strumming.

I wish these folks would use two cameras - one to film them playing and the other on the screen.

Well.. on second thought I'm not sure I want to see these folks. They might be muties from the basement.

Saitoku 2007-01-26 12:54:44 AM
I've seen people who were real pros at Guitar Hero try to pick up a real instrument thinking they'd be insta-gods. Of course, that wasn't the case. On the other hand, I've been playing cello, bass and guitar for about 15 years, and I kinda suck at GH.

24 frets x 4 or 6 strings > 5 buttons

Meniscus [TotalFark] 2007-01-26 01:25:14 AM
I'm still waiting for Uke hero

AdamK 2007-01-26 02:01:22 AM
guitar hero is more like using a shoulder-strapped keyboard than a guitar

if anything it's more like an accordion

/loves playing GH, not great at it tho
//wants to learn how to play a real string instrument

ActualFarkal 2007-01-26 02:09:42 AM
I am unimpressed. He did decent in the sections where you have to keep one finger on the first fret and jump around with the other fingers, but I beat Misirlou the third time I tried. Come back when you can five-star Jordan by Buckethead, n00b.

DriveBy 2007-01-26 09:57:39 AM
I'm sorry, I know this is going to sound like a troll, but real guitars aren't that expensive and are much more impressive when you learn how to really play. I doubt many girls are gonna be dropping their panties over a "Guitar Hero"
wizard. Altough it sounds like a bunch of guys will.

doctorwormwood 2007-01-26 11:01:47 AM
eeeexactly... from one who rocks I agree...
Guitar Hero God=dork women won't touch in his moms basement

real Guitar Hero=on stage with women wet over the band.

stmyers 2007-01-26 11:18:04 AM
Yeah, but Guitar Hero is a fun video game, regardless of it's ability to enable you to get chicks.

Some of us don't want to spend several months and several hundred dollars to learn how to play some shiatty songs.

I'd rather master some Megadeath in a month or 2 in a video game.

You seem to have had experience at this. If more guys realized
what a guitar can do for your sex life, nobody would give video games a second thought. I'm not even that good, but I've met women at band practice who where just passing by and heard the music. It's better than walking with a cute puppy for atracting females.

I love how every Guitar Hero article brings out a fresh crop of idiots who apparently don't understand the concept of videogames. For future reference: everyone is already aware of the existence of guitars, and it's pretty sad that you feel the need to tell strangers on the internet how great you are.

DriveBy 2007-01-26 11:31:01 AM
You're not really "mastering" anything except your ability to push some buttons. Mastering an actual musical instrument is a challenge and rewarding in more ways than just getting chicks (although that is the best by-product by far). I can see the fun part of playing videos. You can't, in reality, go out and waste monsters, but you can really learn how to play a guitar.
Jesus, I learned to play on a crappy 75 dollar fender squier.
It becomes a part of your life when you are committed not just an activity. Spending hours in front of a TV pretending to play without actually learning a note is a waste of time when you could be doing the real thing.

DriveBy 2007-01-26 11:57:36 AM
Pretty sad telling strangers how great you are?
WTF are you smoking? A: I never said I was great. In fact, I said the exact opposite. B: Who is actually posting videos of themselves playing a stupid game showing strangers how great they are? fark, do you think people are ever going to pay money to watch you play a game? You can actually make a living playing guitar. Who's the idiot here?

auhsojsivart 2007-01-26 12:51:23 PM
I'm not a guitar player, and I only play Guitar Hero when I visit my sister who has it. All of the people that are complaining about it not being a real guitar need to realize how asinine that argument is. Have you ever seen a DDRgod? Can those people really dance? Probably not. However, that doesn't make it not impressive.

nicoffeine 2007-01-26 01:06:22 PM
Do some people really feel threatened by Guitar Hero? This is hilarious.

DriveBy 2007-01-26 01:23:40 PM
Nobody's threatened. This is like a PSA for losers.

Goldsfool 2007-01-26 02:30:10 PM
I think it should be perfectly possible to set up a mic/itoy game that actually teaches you how to play a REAL guitar.

I don't think it would be extremely difficult compared to other games out there, either.

Yes, I've heard all the arguments for guitar over Guitar Hero. How Guitar Hero will never get me chicks. How it's so much more rewarding to learn a real instrument. How "real" guitars are actually cheaper than a PS2 + Guitar Hero setup. They all miss the basic point.

It's fun. I have fun playing Guitar Hero. Within 10 minutes of unwrapping the game, I was "playing" songs. Songs that weren't Hot Cross Buns, or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I broke it out at a party, and other people had fun, too. People who couldn't play guitar.

Here's another news flash. Video games *are* a waste of time. On purpose. That's the whole definition of a leisure activity. Something to waste time. Some people waste more time playing a particular game than other people. Hell, if every activity had to have a higher purpose, you shouldn't have spent that time learning guitar, you should have studied biochemistry. Heck, you could've cured cancer by now. Instead, you can make noises come out of a piece of wood with some wires attached to it.

DriveBy 2007-01-26 04:17:06 PM
My higher purpose was to become an engineer and I still managed to learn how to play. Not only can I make noises come out of my piece of wood, I build them too. I just think its dumb as hell to spend time faking something when you can do it for real. I take it that you feel it's not worth doing it in reality if you can have some pre-packaged fun laid out in front of you. I wouldn't really give a shiat one way or the other but these threads pop up and everybodys ohhhhing and aaahhing about how fast you can press 5 buttons like thats some great achievement. It's like something Beavis and Butthead would get excited about.

/get off my damn lawn

CheshireMonkey 2007-01-26 04:52:07 PM
I see I was pretty spot-on in my original post: you don't get the point of videogames. There's nothing wrong with that in itself; many people have hobbies that I don't enjoy or see any purpose or value in. But if you mouth off in a public forum, disparaging other people's hobbies and interests, particularly ones you obviously have little understanding or experience of, that makes you look like a complete and utter tool.

CravenMorehead 2007-01-26 09:14:02 PM
He's using the speed mod which makes really fast songs easier to play.

I think the reason that guitar players like myself do not like Guitar Hero is because it cheapens the craft.

There are alot of programmers on Fark -- if they came up with a game about programming that was basic and far from reality, and all of a sudden there was a horde of people thinking and saying they're programming masters, wouldn't that be a little annoying? If programming isn't your thing, just imagine it for whatever your thing is. You've spent years perfecting it, now everyone is saying they're masters of it with no real concept of it at all, or any real time dedication, comparatively.

Example #2 - When real scientists listen to pseudoscientists such as ghost hunters.

BTW, people playing dance revolution don't think they are dance masters. Guitar Hero people think they are guitar heros.

/Guitar Zero?

Stupid Fat Hobbit 2007-01-28 02:12:11 PM
covenant66: Guitar Hero people think they are guitar heros.

Utter bullshiat. I've never spoken to anyone who plays Guitar Hero who thinks they're doing anything other than playing a videogame.

covenant66 2007-01-28 02:21:17 PM
We must have different experiences with Guitar Hero players. Even someone says above that they knew people who were good at Guitar Hero and thought they would pick up a guitar for the first time and be killer.

Alot of stuff is utter bullshiat if you only count what you have only seen with your own eyes.

RubensHakkamacher 2007-01-31 02:54:11 AM
Put 142 buttons on the controller, make it require 50+ lbs. of strength to activate each button, deduct points if the exact right amount of force is not used, require 10x as much pressure at various angles for string bending, matching pressures for vibrato, deduct points for accidentally brushing the wrong buttons, make the buttons have a different shape along one axis, award bonus points for swiping fingers along different axises in conjunction with 6 button combinationas, and require the "picking hand" to precisely locate 6 "strings", deduct points for the wrong pressure, angle of attack, location on said string, timing, THEN don't give any clues as to where to put your fingers in the first place.

Wow, that *is* impressive, Guitar Hero takes all that into account....? I didn't know that! Wow!!!

/ that's a "game" I do everyday called "teaching real guitar"

RubensHakkamacher 2007-01-31 02:58:50 AM
.. what's funny is that if they'd make a drum set controller, you *could* learn something about playing drums from a game like that. Oh well.

/ the world needs more drummers
// not pretend guitar players
