1. Anyone who take 10 to 15 seconds to work a bolt action is probably in the Navy* or Air Force.

2. The .50 Barrett was initially introduced into service via the U. freakin S. freakin Marine Corps in Sand Box I.

Dumb flick, dumber host.

*SEALS excepted.

.308 is not the standard round for the AK-47.

chewtoy [TotalFark] 2007-01-25 10:11:18 PM
7.62 is .308. Length is the issue not the diameter.

Yeah, but it's not NATO spec 7.62x51/.308 Winchester. 7.62x39 is the standard AK/SKS round. You're right, but the video is vague.

I have a friend that owns one of these. It is a wonder to behold, but damn is that thing heavy. I wouldn't want to lug it around the battle field.

Am I the only to think that the host is... shall we say... way out of line, for lack of a better word? What I saw is what the guys that were interviewed were very professional, cool and down to earth. This host almost creamed his pants when he showed the bullet, and explained the damage it could do to a person.
For goodness sake, can't we have straight host anymore? This one was way too enthousiastic about a killing machine! I have far more respect for the soldiers who treat it as it is: a tool for a job to be done.

For some reason I couldn't get over the fact that the dude at the end of the vid was jerking the trigger so much. Little things like that grate on me more than the host.

enormous_smackmaster 2007-01-26 03:32:45 AM
Yeah the host was a bit of a spaz.

Check the comments on youtube. The Marines are AWP whores? lol Okay it was funny to me because I've played counter strike.

And remember, the Barret can knock over trains.

/not really
//but some people think so

Thank you, I was going to come in here and say something about the host.

He is just WAY too over dramatic.

And yet...that gun is powerless to affect any meaningful change in Iraq.

desolate cancer 2007-01-26 03:58:35 AM
doesnt matter where u get shot with a 50 between eyes or in the jaw ur face is just a memory at the point. Same with any other part of ur bodies general vicinty where shot.

I think this is the only gun availbale to public in us that can take out armored vehicles or heavy equipment. Incase ever get invaded.

You win.

RoyBatty 2007-01-26 09:17:19 AM
Um, when showing rounds to compare in size, holding them up one at a time kinda defeats the point.

Also, saying that this is not a machine gun but that it can deliver 10 rounds "down range" in 10 seconds also kinda confuses the issue. A machine gun can do better than that if all you are measuring is elapsed time.

And when it comes down to it, Corn_Fed FTW.

For everyone's clarification the host is ex-SEAL, hence the poor acting/creaming his pants over warmachines

bongmiester [TotalFark] 2007-01-26 11:14:33 AM
in the nest season the show featured the British made AS50 as the weapon of choise for US special forces.

http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/future-weapons/weapons/zone2/arsenal-1.html

Anyone know why they dropped the Barrett? Wieght? Accuracy?

Superjoe 2007-01-26 11:22:03 AM
I can see you've played gunny-spoony before.

Hungry Little Hamster 2007-01-26 11:54:44 AM
Oh my god, the barrett? I have never heard of that before. That is so cool. Thanks subby for finally putting up a rare video of the weapon.

I've seen video of that gun hitting human targets. Turns them inside out on impact.

A.D. 2007-01-26 02:43:07 PM
I've seen nightvision of what a .50 cal does to humans when used on a machinegun.. there are hardly any pieces big enough to hold in your hand.

One Thirty-two and Bush 2007-01-26 02:48:07 PM
Can someone use this thing to kill the 'shaky effect' cameraman?

Thunderboy 2007-01-26 04:59:32 PM
Barretts are not generally used for anti-personnel ops. That is why they are called "anti-material rifles." They are far too inaccurate for anything else (MOA between 1-2), relative to the M40A1-A3 (1/2 MOA).

Just sayin'.

I had a chance to lug around and shoot a Barret 50 in the Marines, Heavy check. Awkward check. Fun to shoot check!

Anyways, yea some of that crap was REALLY out there...the .50 can put holes in a APC, but to "Tke out" and APC you'd either have to have Rouphous (SP) rounds, wich are armour piercing explosive incinderay rounds (I only saw 6 of these rounds in Iraq) or a few well placed shots.

.50 to the body? saw it through binocs...Arms legs and a head...then they all drooped to the ground.

The pic being a hoax? Yea, the results? not really, in fact, that looks like the Iraqi got hit by a 7.62 round, the .50 would have left less meat if hit square in the face. looks like the round hit high on the forehead...either a good or lucky shot both work just fine!

Denzine 2007-01-27 06:50:05 AM
The M82A1 is still in use, as well as a few other .50BMG rifles. This particular Discovery Channel show is simply chock full of minor(and occaisionally major) bits of misleading or outright incorrect information. I would go so far as to say that any Wikipedia page has more credibility than that show.

fireandsteel13 2007-01-27 11:16:49 AM
Yeah, and 3 feet of water at point blank still PWNS the bullets thrown by this monstrosity. A crowwbow on the other hand...

/If you can't go big, go MEDIEVAL.

fireandsteel13 2007-01-27 11:18:54 AM
must remember to PREVIEW before posting... that's "CROSSBOW"

//Preview before post is my friend. You know, the one I never call?

madcap72 2007-01-28 04:38:03 AM
I've witnessed several 2500 yard hits with the Barrett 50, about the same as this new brit gun. Plus, the Barret has no gas system, is a simple 2 part stamped reciever, a simple series of springs for the action.... Did you see the scope flex when that brit gun fired? The barret schope mounts in a MUCH better position. Not RIGHT on top of the bolt, and had a nice rail to add structual support.

bbphotova 2007-01-29 11:08:37 AM
Almost bought a Barrett this weekend. It was a tossup between it or an M1919A4. Decided against both, but man...I was tempted.
