He's the lead guitar player, not the singer.

I mean really when it comes down to it, what's the difference between Rick Rubin and Rob Zombie? 3 Dixie Chicks = 1 Sheryl Moon Zombie as far as I'm concerned.

At least Slayer still plays metal.

Kerry King frontman? Don't think so. Either way he's right, Metallica havn't been good for like 18 yeares now, why should that change.

Jgsublime 2007-01-20 09:33:43 AM
Slayer needs to STFU before they get sued, Metallica loves to do that, or so I heard.

(normally I would post a funny picture but I do not want Lars Ulrich to sue me)

It's kind of a no-win situation for any band that lasts a certain length of time; sound too much like your original sound, they call you stale and uncreative, change too much, and you've sold out.

That said, though, Metallica has really gone down some real musical dead ends and made bad choices. They mostly have themselves to blame for where they are now.

Sarcasticus 2007-01-20 09:46:38 AM
From TFA:
He says, "I'm surprised he's going to be doing the (next) Metallica record because I don't know how he's going to right that sinking ship.", describing the band as a "sinking ship"..

Ah ha ha.

Metallica's last decent album was Master of Puppets. They have sucked without Cliff.

RIP Cliff

Slayer is the only band that can do the "screaming the lyrics" thing right. They've been doing it for decades, and they're the only ones I can tolerate hearing it from.

Dear other bands:
Stop doing it.
You're not fooling anyone.
You're about as hardcore as a rooster cut.
Again, stop.
Seriously.
Please.
It hurts.

Slayer is not the only band that can do "screaming the lyrics" right , they were just the first. Classic lyric like "I feel the urge, the burning need to fark the sinful corpse" shocked my parents back in the day.

the final nail in Metallica's coffin was letting Jason go. They were heading downhill before that (although Garage Inc was a good album), but Jason was, imho, the smartest member of the band. Smarter even, yes, than Cliff, no knock against him.

Anthrax FTW.

I can name at least one band that doesn't fit that description: Meshuggah. They started as a farking Metallica cover band (was first called Metallen, laugh). Now?

Among the band's most recognizable qualities are lead guitar player Fredrik Thordendal's abrasive, chaotic and dischordant solos, singer Jens Kidman's vocals, which resemble manic screams and shouts; the churning, dissonant rhythm guitars and the polymetric drum beats. In a typical Meshuggah song, drummer Tomas Haake plays two separate rhythms: a standard 4/4 beat with his hands, and a completely different metrical subdivision with his feet. The guitars mostly follow the bass drum work, creating an awkwardly pulsating rhythmic pattern to work as the basis of the song.

To give an example, the main riff of the song "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" from their 1998 album Chaosphere follows the aforementioned blueprint. Haake beats a rather slow 4/4 rhythm with his hands, while the bass drums and guitars play a repetitive 23/16 rhythm pattern on top of it. As the subdivided pattern is repeated, the pattern's accents shift to different beats on each repetition. After repeating the 23/16 pattern five times, a shorter 13/16 pattern is played once. These patterns sum up to 128 16th notes, which equals exactly 8 measures in 4/4 meter.

They've been around since 1987. Melody be damned; it's all about the groove.

the final nail in Metallica's coffin was letting Jason go.

They didn't "let" Jason go, he quit. They wanted him to stay and even were going to let him back in the band (see: "Some Kind of Monster").

But yeah, they have gone downhill over the years. But you can't expect much from a bunch of 45 year olds. Besides "Frantic" and "The Unnamed Feeling", the St. Anger album sucked shiat. Load was pretty lame besides "Until It Sleeps" and "King Nothing". I didn't think Reload was bad. "Fuel", "The Memory Remains", "Bad Seed" and "Low Mans Lyric" are pretty catchy. S&M was just cool and Garage Inc. was pretty neat.

/Not sure where I was going with that...

Yes, Slayer is still together. Their last album, released a few months ago, debuted in the Billboard Top 5.

Not saying that chart placement is the be-all and end-all, but they are still very much vital.

FlyingPig [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 08:31:46 PM
Metallica was good for two reasons:

a) Dave Mustaine
b) Cliff Burton

SilentStrider: the final nail in Metallica's coffin was letting Jason go. They were heading downhill before that (although Garage Inc was a good album), but Jason was, imho, the smartest member of the band. Smarter even, yes, than Cliff, no knock against him.

They also treated Newsted like shiat for 10+ years, and used every possible opportunity they could to make him feel bad and remind him that he WASN'T Cliff Burton. If I were Jason, I would have said "fark you" too. They were downright abusive to him his whole time in the band.

Metallica died with the Black album. At least I still have the first four albums to enjoy. And, I do.

Slayer is still cool. At least, their oldest fans don't hate their guts.

Metallica really pissed me off with St. Anger.

What the fark does "I'm madly in anger with you" mean anyways? That's not even a farking sentence.

nicoffeine:Slayer is the only band that can do the "screaming the lyrics" thing right.

You never listened to Mayhem then. All they do is scream their lyrics, and they really pull it off. They're also pretty hardcore considering the bassplayer committed suicide(his note said 'sorry about all the blood.Cheers!')then the guitarist found him,ran to the store and bought a camera, took pictures, then proceeded to make soup with his brains and made necklaces out of his skull giving a couple away to a few select bands that were 'sufficiently evil'.Then the new bass player killed him on unrelated matters and is now in prison in Norway for that along with burning down a shiatload of churches.
