Well I'm shocked and stunned. Is it the Country or the Western you guys don't like? Maybe crap?

stiletto_the_wise 2007-01-20 09:26:29 AM
Are there any US artists left anymore? They all seem like performers, marketers, and heavily made-up pseudo-models who lip-sync to music on stage and hire professional singers in the studio.

LyleDAL [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 09:55:48 AM
US popular music is a swirling vortex of suck.

I suspect that might, just might have something to do with this.

big_pth [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 10:32:05 AM
Yeah, uh, there are not a whole lot of US musicians right now that are "popular" that actually make "music". Sure, there are popular bands and whores who masquerade as musicians, but they aren't making music so much as attempting to make $$. Oh, and the hardcore rap crowd is suffering from the same problem.

Control_this [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 10:36:20 AM
It's sad when the rest of the world doesn't respect Gnarls Barkley's musical ability to make mix tapes.

Sleeping Monkey [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 10:44:45 AM
We can only hope that one day no US artist's music albums will be in the top 10 in the US either.

kuli 2007-01-20 10:59:16 AM
Well, if you only had made music that was worth listening to..

If popular music is art, then I had a shiat this morning that's a masterpiece.

Hugh_Janus 2007-01-20 11:48:15 AM
Who really cares, if we made teh top 10 in Europe? To really guage the meaning of this, remember they had a number one song over there called, Gay Bar, the vrrom vrrom Frog song was number one, oh, and the Lady Souverign (sp?). Yeah, like I really want american sh*tty artists grouped up with them.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2007-01-20 11:54:25 AM
All popular music sucks, whether it's from the UK or the USA, from the 1960's or the 2000's. Pop music sucks, that's its function. To differentiate is the same as arguing which brand of baseball bat you'd rather have shoved up your ass.

"Hugh_Janus: remember they had a number one song over there called, Gay Bar"

Ah, Electric Six. Those were the days. I preferred Danger (High Voltage) myself.

Weird. Everytime I've been to a bar or club in ANY European country all I here is early 90s rap and pop.

I stopped listening to popular music when Morning Train by Sheena Easton came out. I thought it was a Dr. Demento song. I told my coworker about the crap I heard and he told me that it was the number one song. I can only imagine all the pop tunes I've missed by the likes of Ratt, Puff Daddy, U2, Boys in Men, Culture Club and Metalica. What do I listen to? Zappa, John Prine, LouAnn Barton, Geoff Muldaur, and David Bromberg. You won't find them on any charts. And I like it that way. Uncompromising and talented.

oldandwiser 2007-01-20 03:05:14 PM
Hey Bird3149.....Excellent choice that you listen to.

There's plenty of good American bands. You probably won't find them on any Billboard chart, though.

Hey, at least we Americans have The Flaming Lips.

\That's one great band.

Ooh, ooh, I want to be a pretentious music snob too. Let me try: "Only the most obscure music is good, if you like anything that is popular you are such an idiot! LOOK AT HOW INDIE I AM!!!!!"

Am I getting there? FeedTheCollapse, you seem to be good at it, give me some help.

LyleDAL: US popular music is a swirling vortex of suck.

No, probably not. The Euro top 10 usually is a swirling vortex of suck as well. That said, there is a lot of good music on any continent, just rarely on the charts.

Where did I say that? Either way, I'd say the current top 200 chart (minus The Beatles album) pretty much reinforces my sentiments. Let me guess, anything that isn't in the Top 40 is therefore crap and not worth seeking out? I like how conformity is apparently the new rebellion.

That said, who really cares if the UK top ten lacks any American artists? I mean, that's only ten spots.

dumb_n00b 2007-01-20 05:21:21 PM
Good comtemporary American artists:

"Weird Al" Yankovic--I don't care what you say, the man's a genius

Chamillionaire--I don't like rap that much, but he is quite good, and a really nice guy to boot

Green Day--OK, so their political satire isn't the most subtle and they look kinda gay in all that eyeliner. But they have a point and they can rock. Combine them with Weird Al and you have the Frank Zappa of the current generation. And I don't mean "Canadian Idiot"

MC Lars--Post-punk laptop rap is the new thing. Just you wait

Ben Folds--the man has talent and a point. What more can you ask for?

Well, yes... we're terribly sorry for that. And, apparently, there are enough stupid people here to actually BUY such music , too. I'd move, but I can't come up with a better place...maybe Antarctica?

Well, not if one just listens to top 40 radio and watches American Idol and MTV/VH1.

Lots of great music out there.

danduran
Who the hell are Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks and Rascal Flatts?

The Country Blonde chick of the moment, the current American idol, and the gayest most pussified country group ever.

oldandwiser 2007-01-20 10:04:21 PM
There is lots of good music out there, but it is on the college stations, not commercial ones. My favorite type of music is 1960s' garage and psychedelic. I am surprised how many bands in the last few years have copied the style and don't sound too bad. The Vegetables and The Black Angels are good examples.

Hindmost [TotalFark] 2007-01-21 03:47:32 AM
We're still listening to Zappa over here, but already have all the albums so he doesn't show in the charts.

The real horrible thing about charts are that they reflect what is ordered by wholesalers and not what is purchased by customers. A store could order 500 of one act, sell two and return 498 and the act still receives credit for selling 500. That is called manipulation.

You're either a girl or a boy with no testicles. James Blunt is the biggest ball of suck ever. His one hit song: "Repetitive, Repetitive, Repetitive it's true!"

You are Borg 2007-01-21 10:25:19 PM
Weird Al's cover of Blunt's song is hilarious.
"You're pitiful
You're pitiful
You're pitiful it's true
Never had a date that you couldn't inflate
And you smell repulsive, too
What a bummer being you"

I just want to say that the stance of 'if it's on the radio it's crap, and if it's 'underground' it's gold' is such a joke. I do like and listen way more music that is not radio friendly, but I love acts that are played on the radio as well. Who cares as long as you like the music?

/Have gone to Exhumed, GWAR, Wesley Willis, Cryptopsy, etc.
//Have gone to Big Sugar, Big Wreck, Dave Mathews etc.
///Oh yes, I ride both sides of the fence.
