So according to the most powerful politician in Georgia, teaching "time management" is now a job of the government. Your modern Republican party, ladies and gentlemen.

/voted for him, unfortunately

This isn't the fundamentalists, it's the restaraunt and bar lobby. SC is just the same. The fundamentalists are cover. It's (as usual), business dollars greasing the wheel.

Well, I'm glad I live in Georgia, don't agree with Sonny on this topic, but like him otherwise. It's not like I live in a dry state.

Hell, in my county in SC you can't even purchase a beer, glass of wine, or a cocktail in a restaurant.

We can't buy alcohol on Sunday either, or after 9 PM in Connecticut. In a way, he's right. I have to stock up on Saturday for Sunday. Mass is only 20 minutes away though if there is an emergency.

...where the drinking age is 16 (but you can drink younger than that if accompanied by an adult), it is sold 7 days a week year round, and you can buy it in any supermarket, cafe or grocery.

They just (4 or five months ago) changed the Sunday alcohol law in NY from 12 noon to 8am.
I still have to argue with the bodega owners.

/I'm a drunk dammit

Your modern Republican party, ladies and gentlemen

it's bipartisan. for example, pennsylvania is about the last state government that sells wine and liquor, and that's because the state store unions have made that a litmus test vote for democrats in teh legislature.

Pooter 2007-01-18 04:12:02 PM
Jamin Aura: I am as free as a bird, other than taxes, I answer to no one.

Unless you wanted to go fishing. Or own a gun. Or drive a car. Or work. Or own a business. Or purchase alcohol. Or travel. Or get married. Or gamble online. Or eat trans-fats in New York. Or smoke a harmless plant. Or cash a check. Or.... etc. All things that you need to register for, show identification for, or are flat-out illegal.

(bold for emphasis:) Not that I feel raw about some - or even most - of this... but the idea that you answer to no one simply isn't true. If you don't answer directly to the government, you at least must have some form of government-issued personal documentation to proceed legally.

Jesus, I have to stop drinking... I read that as "Lime Management".

SC did get rid of that asinine "little bottle" law, didn't they?

That they did. The reason for it was kind of funny too. According to a story I read at the time it was repealed they found that that law lead to more drunken driving incidents because bartenders coudln't underpour drinks to customers that looked a little tipsy. Not sure how legitimate that claim is but that's f'n hilarious.

Let's all go to the Benson mansion on West Paces Ferry tomorrow afternoon...have ourselves a little drink-in. Better yet, let's do it on Sunday.

Whoever thinks no one should work or do anything on Sunday, please look up Romans 14:5--

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

So I think these laws that prohibit things on Sunday (I'm against alcohol btw) are actually unconstitutional. You're promoting one religion over another, the way I see it. What's next--Jews coming up with Saturday laws? What's the Muslims' day, Friday? See what I'm saying?

We fundies don't even buy alcohol to begin with, so isn't forbidding the sale of it on Sunday rather pointless?

Wait...is this the same guy from a link greenlit like 3 hours ago?

Georgia Governor proposes spending $19B in tax money to lure more bass fishing tournaments to state

I guess there won't be any fishing on Sundays since I don't know if there's really anything to fishing other than getting plowed.

Sonny Perdue trifecta?

srhp29 2007-01-18 11:53:33 PM
In Oregon, we have only had Sunday alcohol sales for the last couple years max. We don't sell it in the grocery stores either here. I think that is fairly common in other places. This being one of the most liberal states in the union too, you wouldn't expect so many alcohol regulations.

Georgia is working on taking South Dakota's crazy lawmakers tag away. They had a hearing that turned into a tent revival complete with a band.

Sunday liquor bans are stupid. If they are going to ban liquor sales on Sunday they need to close down all the restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and brunch on Sundays. Then all them churchfolk won't be able to go out to breakfast.

OhTeddyWhy [TotalFark] 2007-01-19 12:05:38 AM
Back in the day in ATL, we sometimes didn't manage our liquor purchases on Sundays. All that meant was that we'd go to the store at midnight on Sundays. Sweet early Monday morning 12AM-2AM loophole.

/Hey, you do what you have when you're a functional alcoholic college student.

ThatScottGuy 2007-01-19 12:08:28 AM
Wow, in the span of 5 posts Sonny has forever lost my vote.

I challenge any one to debate me on Sunday alcohol sales without mentioning God, Jesus or the bible. Can't logically be done.

Considering Sonny Perdue's most recent competition was Mark friggin Taylor (who's entire platform seemed to be "Sonny's a doo-doo head"), I'm relatively glad to have him in office. Besides, the "no booze on Sunday" law has been around in this state for ages.

Still, it sure would be nice if I could pick up a sixer on a Sunday afternoon, Sonny. It's not an issue of time management; it's an issue of maximizing the enjoyment of my leisure time.

I always make sure I drink little extra on Sundays. By "little" I mean "a lot."

Someone post the link to the "we are going to write more speeding tickets to fund the trauma centers for hospitals" article from last week for the trifecta.

/Why is my state so slow to realize who the idiots are?
//Obviously didn't vote for Perdue
///Wasn't because he promised to hold a statewide vote to BRING BACK THE CONFEDERATE FLAG either.
////He chastised the previous governor for getting rid of the confederate flag
//All Hail Gov. Bubba!
//Is there a slashy limit cause I'm just warming up?

Funkmaster Frank 2007-01-19 12:40:21 AM
Why is this law still on the books? It's based on religion, and the First Ammendment kinda frowns that sort of thing, no?

srhp29 2007-01-19 12:40:49 AM
Oh wait...I didn't RTFA because it was asaking for information about me before showing it (I thought that was a no no here), but is he talking all alcohol or just hard liquor? Always been able to buy beer and wine on Sundays in Oregon, just not hard liquor.

Funkmaster Frank 2007-01-19 12:40:57 AM
I should add that the law is retarded anyway. Repeal it.

shipofthesun 2007-01-19 12:42:21 AM
Lester Maddux was the last good governor the State had. Jimmy was ok, but it went downhill quickly after that, a collection of dour middle aged white guys culminating in Zell "give'em hell" Miller. Lester was a man of the people, allowing open access by the public to his governorship on Wednesdays, riding the bike backwards, etc. "This state needs a better class of prisoner" Lester was quoted as saying about some scandal, and he did what he could to personally improve the class of prisoner by getting his son involved with some shady business dealings with the state, culminating in his sons arrest, conviction and subsequent incarceration. That is a goddamn Governor. A larger than life figure, that wields no real power, (I think Tom Murphy is still running things from out of office) and is there to entertain the masses, not piss them off. Bad show, Sonny

Yup, I'm with ya...Overall, Sonny's o.k. in my book although this "no booze sales" nonsense is kind of annoying. Guess I will just stock up the other six days.

I brought this up in the last Purdue thread and I'll say it again. The guy is an idiot sometimes. From closing schools for 2 days to save gas money to this. This morning when I read this article in the paper I was actually shocked to read this quote. Just when you think you have heard every dumbass thing this guy could say, he just outdoes himself.

/obviously didn't vote for him.
//Didn't vote for Mark Taylor either.

Yep. Even when PA allowed the state stores and beer distributors to open limited hours on Sunday, guess who biatched? The beer distributors and state stores, because now they'd have to go to work on Sundays to keep up with the competition.

It's also illegal to sell cars on Sunday in PA. And the car dealerships are all fine with this, because it's a day where they can all be closed and not pay their salespeople and not worry that a competitor might steal their business.

paygun 2007-01-19 01:45:30 AM
SuckItTrebek: I'm not a Christian, so why do I have to have the laws of my state made in favor of those who are?

Because that's the way God wants it, you heathen. You're going to burn in hell anyway so who cares what you think?

I'll pray for you. JESUS RULES!!!

^Yeah I'm pretty proud of that one.
