You'd think people smart enough to come up with that kind of system wouldn't be stupid enough to get greedy.

If they can come up with a way to not be detected winning lots of money, they've got it made.

Scudder

They could learn to play poker well. My old neighbor taught himself in 6 months. At that point, he regularly (maybe 1 or 2x a month) won tournaments online for a thousand or more. Some real dedication to something besides cheating could actually make them some legit money.

This couldn't have been regular poker, it had to be a table game of some sort (3-card poker, Let It Ride, etc.).

Casinos *never* lose money at poker games, they only make money (the rake). Granted, they don't make a lot, as compared to table games, but they have almost zero risk.

Vegas- scam a half a million bucks, get some hard time or maybe a nice dirt nap out in the desert somwhere.

London- scam a quarter million pounds, get 9 month but suspended, some community service and no gambling for 2 years. We really mean it!

Baliff, whack his pee-pee!

So now we know where to go when we think wer'e smart enough to scam a casino.
Hookers are sorta legal in England right?... to bad about the lousy exchange rate.
Oh well.

Why is it legal for casinos to rob people blind but not the other way around?

That Guy...From That Show! 2007-01-16 02:47:19 AM
WTF with a roulette wheel pictured? That has absolutely nothing to do with their cheating.

And, it wasn't james bond style in the slightest, they just photographed and communicated using 10 year old technology.

There was a very bad employee card dealer who should have been noticed and fired.

I play a lot of poker at casinos and when I see that happen (it does, once in a while) I do notify managers.

Maybe because casinos don't wander into your house and willingly toss money at you?

Ya think?

"These casinos have suggested they may have experienced losses of as much as £250,000 from this scam," said Detective Inspector Darren Warner

Hey, casinos! This is just for you: www.countrystrings.com

No Catchy Nickname 2007-01-16 04:51:08 AM
The judge, who was dealing with the gang only for that single night of dishonesty, continued:

Silly judge; he knew they were card-cheats yet continued to deal.

skiflyer 2007-01-16 05:35:26 AM
something is wrong with that article. Casino's don't lose £250,000 to poker cheats, other players might, but Casino's don't. Not unless they're referring to one of those table games like Carribean Stud as poker.

But I don't see this scam as being helpful in any games other than real poker and blackjack.

I've read stories about people cheating a casino by tracking the payout statistics on slots and other machines.

Any truth to it?

IdBeCrazyIf: I've read stories about people cheating a casino by tracking the payout statistics on slots and other machines.

Let your Fark screen name be guide on this.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slot_machine:

"Standard slot machines do not get "hot" or "cold". The odds of hitting a winning combination are determined by a random number generator contained in the machine's software and is exactly the same with every spin. Such slot machines are never "due to be hit" if they haven't paid out a jackpot in a while."

Video poker and keno games have been beaten due with inside programming knowledge, but you need to leverage that windfall against a couple of years in PMITA prison.

bighairyguy: Video poker and keno games have been beaten due with inside programming knowledge, but you need to leverage that windfall against a couple of years in PMITA prison.

Yea, but if thats the case. If one knew the RNG you could make one hell of a killing on the slots.

Any programmer will tell you that no RNG is truly random, as any true random numbers are required to use some source of entropy from outside the system.

So what.. do these slots use the ambient temp, moisture, date and time, number of coins, etc... to generate the random numbers?

Hell, I would betcha the programming for the machines is more closely gaurded than the actual vaults at the casino.

shiny_carapace 2007-01-16 09:37:56 AM
Give them a break on the roulette pics. The art director probably read "The Eudaemonic Pie" and jumped the gun when he/she heard "gadget casino scheme".

Get with the program. He doesn't CARE now.

Sounds like they really just made money off the inability of the dealers to deal the cards face-down through the whole deal, capturing the momentary up-angle of the cards.

I say tough toodies to the casinos. They should SUCK IT and train the dealers to deal BETTER.

Generally modifying the random number using time (in milliseconds or clock cycles) is more than enough

Err... it is most emphatically NOT illegal to use statistics in gambling. Counting cards is, and always has been, 100% legal. The casino reserves the right to ask you to stop playing/leave, but as long as you're just mentally doing math (not using electronics or marked cards, etc), there is nothing illegal about it.

Think of it this way... would you bet $10,000 that you'll beat Michael Jordan in a game of one on one? Doubtful, because we all know that's a bad bet. Same deal here; the house does not make bets that it has the worst end of; hence, they reserve the right not to bet a card counter that they'll win at blackjack.

/I am a floor supervisor at a Chicago area casino, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...

And, it wasn't james bond style in the slightest, they just photographed and communicated using 10 year old technology.

Having (affordable) very small up-sleeve video cameras (that can shoot at slow motion frame rates!) relayed wirelessly to a van with video playback gear is a lot more likely today than ten years ago.

I wish this article had more information. How did they catch the guys in the van? What kind of poker exactly were they playing? Did they not notice the one gang member always standing behind the dealer trying to stick his sleeve up under the cards that were getting passed out? (Maybe that's really how they got caught?)

BrotherTheodore 2007-01-16 11:24:56 AM
DigDugDang: Did they not notice the one gang member always standing behind the dealer trying to stick his sleeve up under the cards that were getting passed out?

I imagine the camera was up the sleeve of a player sitting normally in front of the dealer, arm on the table with his hand slightly sloped up within his sleeve. Camera in the lower part of his sleeve to get as low an angle as possible.
The dealer deals and the card is momentarily above the table slightly. Just enough for the LOWER camera to get a peek.

I loved that book, but I have to think that some of it is embellished or made up outright. Nobody takes casinos for that kind of money and doesn't wind up buzzard food.

Yeah that's why I'd like to hear more details.. My understanding is that the dealer takes a rake every hand (in cash games). At worst, these guys weren't tipping the dealer? This article did an awful job explaining how exactly they "cheated" the casino (and apparently think roulette resembles poker).
