I vaguely remember this happening to a TFer. He posted about his stuff being stolen, then it showed uup on eBay, he bought it, and showed up with the cops.

Does anyone have info/link to what I'm talking about?

I'm sure the official Irony Police® will do a better job at explaining why exactly this isn't ironic, but suffice it say that it is not.

/Coincidence.

Oh no, here comes the irony police to make this thread all about irony, and not the headline or article.

I just came here to post about stealing some losers' GPS thing and selling back on ebay....isn't THAT some irony?!

Homer: So, the cat burglar was caught by the very person trying to catch him.
Submitter: How ironic!

I hope the police taser the victim and then GPS his ass to the PMITA prison for being an idiot.

You first. (or second, more accurately)

The ironic part is being unable to find a GPS device.

/isn't it?

FTA: He was ordered held on $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash bail and told to surrender his passport

If he is a flight risk, then why give him the opportunity, why not just deny him bail?

I hope this douchebag spends many years in prison all the while being someone's biatch. He's the type that prison was made for, not all the drug users we lock up.

Let's just drop the "Ironic" tag, shall we? Even when something actually is ironic, is it really likely to be the best tag for the story?

Captain Iceballs 2007-01-08 06:27:42 PM
I'm sure there are plenty or farkers who would hit scooby in preference to Alanis.

Personally I preferred this photo: img82.imageshack.us

/so not ironic

Inverse Tiger 2007-01-08 06:29:25 PM
TFA: and buyers as recently as Sunday were raving about him. "Fast delivery. Excellent product. Will do business again," read one comment.

Um... Well that's just what we call "pillow talk", baby. That's all.

Funny how the writer thinks eBay reviews mean anything.

GoSurfing 2007-01-08 06:30:35 PM
I wonder if it was an L2C GPS. We use them and they are insanely expensive for the base stations.

SharkInfested 2007-01-08 06:31:00 PM
I saw a bumper sticker today that said "What would Scooby do?"

/isn't it?

Not if the GPS device is turned off.

mrwombat 2007-01-08 06:49:48 PM
It would be ironic if he bought it back and then cancelled payment.

Also, much funnier.

True, the GPS only knows where IT is when it is activated. I bet the crook left the device on to heighten the irony. Oh, sweet, delicious irony!

Rented a house in metro Denver area in 1997. Some douchebags broke in and stole absolutely everything. I lost five guitars that day.

I found two of the guitars at a music store earlier this year...in L.A....and I don't even live in California - just stopped in to poke around while on a business trip.

How the guitars managed to stay together is beyond me. Why I saved the police report complete with guitar serial numbers for ten years is stranger still...got both guitars back.

/none of you really care
//still a good story

Weird. We just made a film about essentially the same thing, with a Twilight Zone-y twist. Including fake eBay listings and everything.

uuh....if the articles were stolen, wouldn't ANY profit be 100%?

A GPS device is a lot easier to find if you attach a GPS device to it.

Speaking of GPS devices... anyone have any experience with the Pioneer AVIC-S1?

I'm thinking about mounting one on my motorcycle and have it function as the speedo as well as the cool nav features. I'll like the fact that I won't have to run a speedo sensor or cable or calibrate anything for tires size, etc. Bonus points for having a cool-lookin' touch-screen panel for a dash.

But I've never actually spoken with anyone who's had one and can tell me how much or little they like using it.

Beuler?

Spektyr 2007-01-08 07:17:08 PM
I know lots of people who sell electronics on ebay. Those who don't fence get their stuff from the goodwill (which means it is either broken or on its last legs.) Everyone I know has an ebay/paypal horror story, yet every damned one of them still uses it.

It's nice to see that there are still police forces that are willing to investigate something like this. I get the feeling that here in the UK we would have been fobbed off with something like, "Oh, it's a civil matter" or "We don't have enough evidence... well, a serial number could be forged, it means nothing". Basically, in the UK, cops will say anything to avoid having to confront any criminals.

desolationrow 2007-01-08 07:22:32 PM
"You have a defendant who is very clever, who used eBay to sell these products with a pure 100 percent profit to him," Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. They talk about this guy like he's a mastermind criminal. He stole some crap and sold it online. Clearly we're dealing with a criminal genius here.
