I bow down to Submitter, our new ASCII headline overlord.

Awesome.

ditto to GoDeep

NakedReporta [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 01:59:27 PM
I submitted this with a more musical headline.

But I can't say it was better.

* golf clap *

I really do hope this goes green, but it should be pointed out that there should be a second guy in the water.

I thought the same thing, but maybe the mods can fix it. Or, one guy was underwater already. Green it should be, though.

GoDeep [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 02:04:43 PM
If this goes green and Submitter is a 'Liter, he's got a month's TF coming. So, out yourself.

a4dzac [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 02:05:40 PM
There's a USS Twin Cities? Coo!

Three more, actually.

Two died, I only see one ascii dude in the headline.

How the hell do you fall off a submarine?

You are on the deck. Big wave comes. Your name is now Bob.

CarcinogenCrunchies [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 02:16:08 PM
Well, my limited experience with submarines comes from the old "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" ride at Disney World and Sealab 2021. I guess I didn't realize they had decks.

Arrrrgh. Not the ahhh shark headlines again.

quick thread jack

I'm looking forward to getting to the top... just don't submit many threads 'till next Tuesday so I can see the streamers/balloons/confetti and what not.

CarcinogenCrunchies: How the hell do you fall off a submarine?

The topside is rounded off on the 688 class. You're supposed to be tied off to the track with a deck crawler but even that won't guarantee your safety, when I was in, 2 men (the 1st LT and a chief) were killed after they were washed overboard and beaten to death against the side of the boat by large waves and the boats forward speed. They were held there by their safety lines and nobody could pull them up against the force of the moving water. The CO was relieved soon afterwards for not reacting fast enough. He was late getting the boat out of the shipyard and didn't realize the situation until it was too late.

Ulysses S Grant SSBN 631 coming out of Portsmouth NH, around DEC of 88 IIRC

HaywoodJablonski [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 03:30:33 PM
Green? *sigh*

You asked for it, admins

GoDeep [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 03:31:56 PM
HaywoodJablonski: Green? *sigh*

I think they did it so they could get the $5 out of me.

CatJumpJohn 2006-12-29 03:52:32 PM
I enjoyed this. The occasional ASCII is fine.

Radioactive Ass [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 04:02:33 PM
Radioactive Ass: around DEC of 88 IIRC

I was wrong, it was April 6, 1987. The whole story is here (pops) about 3/4ths of the way down.

Radioactive Ass: He was late getting the boat out of the shipyard and didn't realize the situation until it was too late.

Guess the words "Man Overboard" and "All Stop" didn't come of his mouth fast enough.

Just goes to show you that going to sea is always a dangerous business. RIP shipmates.

Bravo Zulu submitter for the ASCII code.

NakedReporta [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 04:26:59 PM
So who gets the headline credit here? The original submitter? The resubmitter who added the second guy? Or the admin?

Radioactive Ass [TotalFark] 2006-12-29 04:40:41 PM
DAR: "All Stop" didn't come of his mouth fast enough

That didn't come out of his mouth for over 5 minutes, he slowed the boat to 5 kts instead, he also couldn't turn the boat to put them on the lee side because it was restricted navigable waters so he might have run aground. Like I said he was in a rush to beat the tide and he was already a few months or so late getting the boat out of the yard and he didn't want to extend it another day or two.

"USS Minneapolis-St. Paul". You mean we St. Paulers have to share a name with Minneapolis for a freakin' sub? We can't have 2 separately-named subs?

Luckily it was tied to the pier on Guam.

RIP guys.

FLYNAVY 2006-12-29 05:05:07 PM
8 Bells guys,
See you on the high ground.

*Ships have handrails, aircraft carriers have safety nets around the perimeter, subs have safety lines to keep us from falling overboard in bad weather. Safety lines are the least effective & beginning to think submariners have a more dangerous job than the flight deck shirts.
