If I spend more than six minutes on this site I end up at the checkout of no less than three of these shops.

*slaps hand*

Area 2 left out Rocky Mountain Chocolates-they make great stuff, including incredible sugar-free stuff.
And mrs. Cavanaugh's...based in Utah, ships country-wide. Awesome goodies.

I bow down before the awesomeness here.

Of course, candy is only one part of the puzzle... you need chips, too: http://www.taquitos.net/ [pops]

Awesome, Harry London is on there. That's good stuff. Used to go there every month or so when I lived in Canton a long time ago.

On the silly side, my local Trader Joe's is carrying TEN POUND chocolate bars. Just under 25,000 kcal.

I could see somebody bringing one and slicing it up for a corporate function, but it would seem to be massive overkill for even a fairly large family.

God damn I love candy. Who invented candy? Maybe John Candy invented candy. That would make a lot of sense.

Korovyov

Usually the super big chocolate bars are for bakers and other cooks. They use them in their baking/cooking.

Eh, if you do a lot of baking it would be good.

Man... I love chalk-lit, but I got a farked-up liver and saturated fat makes Me sick. I keep looking but can't find low-fat chocolate bars. I was gonna try making My own, but there's sat. fat in the cocoa powder.
The only thing I can have is Mexican Ibarra chocolate discs. They have a ton of sugar in them and less choco-liquor or nibs. They're pretty good.
Chocolate isn't really that important to Me, but it's just one of them things...They can send a man to the moon but they can't..

GorFad 2006-12-10 01:24:18 AM
All this froo-froo fancy stuff, whatever. I guess I'm unsophisticated. Whitman's Sampler does it fine for me.

eraser8 2006-12-10 01:26:26 AM
I just don't like chocolate. I never have. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate...it doesn't matter. I don't want it.

Is there something wrong with me?

First, a popcorn thread (albeit a sad one). Then a chocolate thread. At 1.30am, while I'm staying up late doing my final!

Oh, and eraser8, I have a friend just like you. Hated chocolate of any type and form!

1. West Coast (California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho & Nevada)

Recchiuti (San Francisco) - fine chocolates from Michael Recchiuti located in the Ferry Terminal in San Francisco. Lots of herbal combination infusions, uncommon ingredients and savory inclusions. Known also for their sauces. (order online) Expensive

Instant credibility for that list, and you can stop reading right there, on the very first listing. I've tried pretty much all of the chocolate brands on that list, and I think Michael Recchuiti is the very best chocolate made in America. Try it. Trust me on this. And you don't have to try their "herbal infusions" and the like if you don't want to--their regular chocolate without any added flavorings is incredible.

eraser8 2006-12-10 01:32:16 AM
Korovyov, I love Trader Joe's. I miss Trader Joe's.

I used to go there all the time when I lived in Menlo Park. Now that I live in Atlanta, *sigh*...well, I just don't want to talk about it any more; I'll get too depressed.

sombreradoraloca 2006-12-10 01:49:29 AM
I prefer dark chocolate, but not the bitter "pure" kind. It has to have some buttermilk and sugar in it, otherwise it just isn't worth it.

Chocolate should be smooth and creamy, TASTE like it's rich and good for you, and give all the satisfaction of the fat that's there. Take it in small quantities and eat the best there is. Life is good.

No mention of Ghirardelli in SF? How can you have a website that advise people on chocolates, divided by region, and then mention 5 other choclatiers in the SF bay area, including See's, and then overlook Ghirardelli's?

Kinda blows it's credibility as a guide, huh?

I'm not saying Ghirardelli's is the best, but it's better than See's and it's a SF landmark.

What?! No Widman's Candy, inventor of the Chippers, from North Dakota?

And no Maison Du Chocolat in midtown manhattan?! (I was at a party with some young professionals with my wife; a friend of thiers was moving to NY and asking for suggestions. My wife says "oh yeah, there's a chocolate place in midtown." and 5 other people ring out "Oh yeah! La Maison Du Chocolat!")

And that non-linking map sucks!

This list is poorly researched and their map is 'teh suck.'

This website is like most blogs; poorly researched and lacking in some general knowledge.

No Bernard Callebaut? meh.

1998

Bernard Callebaut was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix International Artisan Chocolatier, which was the top award presented at the International Chocolate Festival held in Roanne France. Bernard Callebaut is the only North American chocolatier presented such a respected award.

1997

Held in Épinal France, Bernard Callebaut attended the International Chocolate Festival and was presented the Prix d'Excellence for achieving consistently high points for all products entered into the competition.

1996

The French National Government inducted Bernard Callebaut into the Confererie Du Nougat (Nougat Guild) and the Ordre Internationale De La Gatronomie Française (International Order of French Gastronomy). Invited as an Honored Guest, and as the first North American chocolatier, to the International Chocolate Festival held in Montélimar France, Bernard Callebaut received awards for superior chocolate to accompany fine wines, superior children's chocolate product, and the overall Prix d'Excellence.

So much for liberal credentials - not one recommendation for guaranteed slave free chocolate, when almost half the world's chocolate is slave grown. I guess they send Hillary enough to stay off the lists.

Mmmmm Jacques Torres. My best friend lives near his store in Brooklyn and I'm good for $100 every time I walk into the store.

Elsewhere on the site she cheers free trade chocolates, for exactly the reason you mention, and includes "green" candies and touts their superiority as well. It's just not the 'be all and end all" of a site dedicated to the enjoyment of candy, nor do I think it should be.

Sorry guys. You might have the best army in the world, and the most famous movie stars, but when it comes to chocolate and pastry in gneral, you have... puke... Hersheys.... puke, and weird ass white cakes with green phosphorescent colors...

The French, Swiss or Italians know the bizz...

They left off Market Street Sweets (Chas. SC)/ River Street Sweets (Savannah) in the SE, and Fannie May from the midwest?

/Fannie May isn't the same since being sold to a Alpine Confections, but hubby thinks it's better than no Trinidads
