Nice, but can it handle mashed?

Yawn. You know it must be Sunday afternoon when this shows up as a greenlight.

Until they come up with a chain-fed, automatic spud launcher, I'm not interested.

Big deal. We made a bigger one than that when I was in the boyscouts. It was set up more like a mortar, and we used a gas propellant.

I once built a breech loaded potato gun...does that count? Belt fed is hard to do. Potatoes are never the same size.

On that point, I am putting this challenge out to the collective minds of the farkers! Can anyone give me a realistic design of something that can make potatoes all the same size, and quickly? I tried feeding them through an old tin can, just to get them rounded, but ended up with too many jams to make it effective. Any ideas would be appreciated.

This spudgun is airpowered!? Gonna take a big compressor to get the launch you want!
Used to make these in the shop outta brass and fired with black gun-powder! A potato could go straight thru a garage door at the right distance!

On another note, are those two cylinders on the side simply stabilizers or are they built for recoil?? Would make a huge difference in your shot powr and accuracy.

it sounds liek something you would have to do in advance and by hand

Chairboy 2006-12-03 05:52:30 PM
GenesisExodus: Most folks sharpen the end of the barrel. That way, you just cram it into the barrel and it self molds to the proper diameter. I keep a dowel around to push it in.

http://hallert.net/misc/pneumatics/pneumatics.html for some more info, I also converted mine into a flamethrower.

GE:

Reenforece the sides of the cans, but make thier hight nearly nothing. That way the potatoes won't get jammed anymore. Best way would be a cone with the tip cut off and outward slopping edges on the inside and outside.

Combustion is lame. This thing is powered by compressed air. So was mine. All 14 feet of it. Made this sucker look like a toy. Also, the one in the link is like 4 years old.
/Mine shot an ice round a good mile.

simple. get a piece of plastic pipe the same size as your barrel, and sharpen one of the ends. simply push down onto a tater to cut out the perfect size

Silicon Sam 2006-12-03 05:56:26 PM
That isn't plywood they are shooting at, it's OSB. Plywood is much stronger...

GenesisExodus 2006-12-03 05:59:35 PM
TheHappyCanadian and the others

Sure, I've tried those. But what I am aiming for is to get a fully automatic system. I can premake tater shots all I want, but eventually, I will run out. I need something to feed them through a system, bringing it eventually right into the barrel. I had an idea of using a hydraulic ram, or even an airfed ram to slam the potatoes through the PVC/Tin Can, and making the shape. The only problem is the sorting and alignment. When I am done this thing, it will be tripod mounted to take off the weight, and you would be able to just dump in a bag of potatoes and start firing after the first one loads. Quite complicated really, and being a construction worker, I'm not qualified to be an engineer of these sorts.

muzzrphochr 2006-12-03 06:00:56 PM
Rather maddening task trying to make them all the same size. Always gonna have rough edges.

How about something gravity fed?

ShirleySerious 2006-12-03 06:01:32 PM
My combustion gun works just fine. While it's not the most powerful thing, I like the portability aspect. It fits perfectly in my trunk and I don't have to schlepp around any heavy compressors or propane tanks. For the money, it's the best since it's cheap enough to build another one if it breaks.

obviouscat 2006-12-03 06:01:37 PM
I highly recommend the barrel-mounted camera shot video.

300-400yards. That's nothing compared to "Punkin Chunkin" in Deleware. They shoot 8lb punkins over 4000 ft.

OLD NEWS...Ed Goldman developed this back when he owned the SGTC and that's been over a year ago! I don't think the new owner has even developed anything new yet...

GenesisExodus 2006-12-03 06:09:42 PM
PersonTwo Did you use plans for that? Or was that homemade? Would love to see it/build one. Projectiles are the love of my life. That, or I might just be attracted to shooting people with grapes.

Sounds like an air design, but low pressure. I used to have a setup for my launcher that could lauch eggs 400+ feet plus. I could egg whole neighbourhoods in seconds. If anyone wants my simple egg launcher idea, let me know. I'll post it up. It's rather easy to do, and makes Halloween that much more special.

muzzrphochr 2006-12-03 06:12:03 PM
This cannon is launching bottles not spuds. Even weaker. A lot of work for that.

Anybody know anything about potatoe?

Twice in the last two weeks I've bought bags of them and each bag had a rotten potato in the bottom and it smelled worse than fish guts left in a cooler in a car trunk in August in the desert.

How can such a simple (and small) thing create so much stank??

What's the science/biology behind it?

I made a spud gun way better than this thing

Did you post videos of it on the internet? Because that's the important part.

GenesisExodus 2006-12-03 06:24:32 PM
PersonTwo Good idea. I'm headed to the store as we speak. Well, not literally, I have to make fun of the jackass that said he made a Gauss rifle.

Wow- same thing happened to me, some of the yuk juice spilled on some canned goods too, I didn't find the source of the nasty until after I tossed some other groceries away.

All the other potatoes seemed ok but the bag smelled bad enough to land all of them in the garbage.
How do they smell so bad? I got mine at winco/waremart

muzzrphochr 2006-12-03 06:38:15 PM
potatoes are used in the distilling of alcohol...you think they are gonna smell like jasmine on a sunny sunday afternoon???

"Security in this office park is a joke. Last year, I came to work with my spud gun in a duffel bag. I sat at my desk all day, with a rifle that shoots potatoes at 60 pounds per square inch. Can you imagine if I was deranged?"

olddinosaur 2006-12-03 06:46:41 PM
"GenesisExodus": Get yourself a beer can crusher, and in place of the anvil, mount a piece of PVC pipe which has been sharpened around the edges like a cookie cutter.

Shove spud in position, activate lever, lift lever, add another spud.

Spuds bored out to correct caliber fall down the hole at the rate of 1 every 2 seconds or so.

olddinosaur 2006-12-03 06:52:40 PM
"Oh_Enough_Already", I used to work in wholesale produce, and the trick is, always look for dry skins on all the spuds.

Dry skin proves freshness.

They get old, they start oozing juice. Next they stick out shoots, and they rot and stink.

Mad Mark 2006-12-03 07:12:28 PM
I like your guys idea of the smaller grape gun. A buddy of mine had the same idea after building a spud gun. Only our downsized idea was a radish pistol. :)
We made a dry ice cannon at work. Used a cut down exhaust stack off one of our diesel trucks. Welded an old pulley on one end to seal it off. We would shove a 2 liter bottle filled with dry ice & water down the stack. Then follow it with a wad of shrink wrap. The shrink wrap would expand & seal against the sides. Then the "ammo"- another 2 liter filled w/ water, a 40 oz. beer, etc. We could launch quarts/40 ouncers outta sight. Problem is you don't know how long till it goes off.

You can make a sabot round by wrapping each spud in foam wrap and having the barrel be a little over sized so that the differences in each potato will not matter.

You obviously have no clue what's going on. Those aren't stabilizers... they're air chambers.

Each 6" diameter chamber has it's own Supah-Valve (that's what the red hose is attached to)

I built a similar monster using 5ft x 4" chambers & a 2.5" PVC barrel I ordered from spudtech. It makes tennis balls dissappear.

And the electric sprinkler valves I have are rated to 180 PSI... not that I'm ever going to take it up that high.

Jeez - I normally don't biatch about this stuff, but I first saw that spud-cannon about 4 years ago. Just think - if I'd known about fark back then, I coulda had a greenlight.
