I wrote a kids play about the 3 little pigs, and the big bad wolf was indeed the president of the HOA. Life imitates art, you know.

It's been my belief that as the stakes get more trivial, the fighting and politics involved become more vicious. Examples: HOA's, church committees, inter-office policies, etc.

i love that the HOA board members all had to change their phone numbers. I can only imagine the volume pf calls they were getting after banning peace.

I mean come on, symbol of satan? that was really a reach.

It was all a misunderstanding.
Just like the president of the HOA firing the board when they disagreed with his ruling against the wreath. All just one big, hilarious misunderstanding.

HOA, DIAF.

BunkyBrewman [TotalFark] 2006-11-28 08:51:58 AM
Where's the OBVIOUS tag?

The president of the HOA (bully) was exposed to the public. Of course, he had no option but to back off the proposed daily fines. Wuss.

You have to appreciate that it took the guy a day to have his phone number changed to an unlisted one.

Biggles666 2006-11-28 08:52:36 AM
It's wonderful, if you want to change the world or a sign on the side of your house all you have to do is get featured on the daily show.

From TFA: By Monday, news of the HOA was circulating worldwide on the Internet and readers were being asked to contact Kearns and the HOA to register a protest.

Behold the power of FARK!!!1!eleven

What authority does a homeowners association even have to levy fines? What if the people just didn't pay them? What would be done about that?

Mugato [TotalFark] 2006-11-28 08:55:34 AM
I have no sympathy for people who get screwed by their HOAs. They knew it was a petty, fascist little neighborhood run by power tripping busybodies when they joined.

Oh man. I will never serve on any board ever again unless I'm being paid.

gridlocksammy [TotalFark] 2006-11-28 08:58:13 AM
None of the three members of the board in the scenic town 270 miles southwest of Denver was available for comment late Monday. Bob Kearns, president of the board, and Jeff Heitz, both had their phone numbers changed to unlisted numbers Monday. Tammy Spezze, the third board member, did not return a call seeking comment

The thunderous wrath of the intraweb strikes again. Poor Bob and Jeff had to change their phone numbers simply because they came off as giant asshats. Now if they would just change their addresses there would indeed be peace in their community.

IamFrums 2006-11-28 08:59:35 AM
I don't understand what everyone is freaking out about.

I mean all the president of the HOA did was imply that peace was a symbol of the devil, that wreaths are anti-Bush and clearly anti-american and then fired everyone who disagreed with her.

What's so wrong with that?

What happens to those who didn't join?

What happens to people who buy a house and THEN the neighborhood decides to start an HOA. This happened to my sister and she voted no for the HOA. But majority ruled and now they have an HOA.

What he said. The power of the HOA comes only from a contract you would sign. She's in a good position to not sign and nobody can do a damn thing about it.

I can't believe that no one has yet posted a Seinfeld pic of the condo association meeting with Jerry's dad, where Elaine is tripped out on pain meds and she keeps on shouting "STELLA...!!"

That was the epitome of small-minded politics.

That doesn't make any sense. The authority that a HOA depends on the homeowner signing a contract willingly. They can't just roll in like you're Poland. Unless someone brings along Luca Brasi and makes you an offer you can't refuse, you don't have to join.

pixistick: What happens to people who buy a house and THEN the neighborhood decides to start an HOA. This happened to my sister and she voted no for the HOA. But majority ruled and now they have an HOA.

In that case, the HOA has no power over you until you sign the agreement.

They can make all the requests in the world, but the only thing governing you are county/city ordinances. The HOA rules don't apply to you.

They have no power to fine or otherwise sanction you.

Make sure your sister is made aware of this.

She does not have to pay any dues, nor does she have to follow any of their rules.

TheSignPost 2006-11-28 09:11:57 AM
No one should be forced to join a HOA if they owned the house before the HOA was formed.

The HOA should be told to f*ck off, in no uncertain terms, and bags of flaming poo should be left on their doorstep until the situation resolves itself.

ponchosuperstar: What authority does a homeowners association even have to levy fines? What if the people just didn't pay them? What would be done about that?

They can put a lien on the house. And if the fines get heavy enough they can foreclose in extreme circumstances.

/compulsory membership in an HOA is unconstitutional

smokescreen 2006-11-28 09:12:35 AM
I just finished reading a wonderful book on the Chicago Outfit and thought of an analogy.

During its heyday, the Chicago Mob would extort "fees" from Hollywood Studios and Labor Unions for services promised and never rendered.

Let's go to the Townhouse/Condo concept. There is an association that charges fees for services promised. Unlike the mob, it provides some of these services, but not enough to justify the cost. I mean, the driveways are plowed of snow AFTER yo leave for work. That $200 monthly assessment goes to pay some guy to change the lightbulb in the hallway. Some assessment funds are raided for other purposes.

And to top it off, the fees have no where to go but up, and are not even tax deductible.

Other than feeling like a rat, this is the next reason to avoid the condo/townhouse craze that has engulfed a lot of idiots.

/not edited for speeling

Behold, the Power of Fark.

As I said yesterday there is absolutely NOTHING a Homeowners association can do to protect your property values that you can't do yourself in civil court with a Nuisance Abatement Action. The only reason to live in an HOA community is if you for some reason LIKE being forced to conform and having your every action scrutinzed and micromanaged. And if you're into that sort of thing Dominatrixes are cheaper and more satisfying.

omnimancer28 2006-11-28 09:13:58 AM
Haha, yea. My entire neighborhood opted into a HOA except for maybe four of us. Within a year it was taken over by one of those stay-at-home busybodies who loves to control everyone else. Next think you know, all of the HOA members are having to shell out tons of money to replace non-uniform drapes, mailboxes, paint colors, etc.

/The four of us switched to pink curtains and flamingo mailboxes.
