no way.

That has to be a prank or some kind of joke

Someone failed to spot that the source for this story is bbspot.

Silly submitter

This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have read all day.

The article referred to in the linked /. item is a satire site.

Subby self p0wn3d.

I knew that couldn't be right.

AlexDeGruven 2006-11-28 07:58:04 AM
Sadly, though this is satire. How far from reality would actions by the MPAA like this be?

They already have made it known that the principles of fair use don't exist to them.

The unfortunate thing will be when someone at the MPAA realizes that this might be a good idea.

Bicycle safety tip 2006-11-28 07:58:26 AM
This should be popular.

syberpud 2006-11-28 07:58:58 AM
That's almost stupid enough to be believable. Every now and then BBSpot comes up with a good gag.

bakatare 2006-11-28 07:59:49 AM
No problem, my 300 seat theater is equipped with futons. Now hiring jizz moppers btw

Imagine in 10-20 years when people look back on stories like this and say "Wait, back then they were joking about this ?"

Well done Subby how does it feel to be an idiot? Or unless you did this on purpose to try an catch other idiots with the righteous fury anger thing.....hmmmmm.

Thanks for pointing up the bbspot origin. Phew. My flagging faith in humanity is restored until at least noon.

Greenlighting a slashdot article which links to a bbspot article and tagging it asinine

Genius!

Omnivorous 2006-11-28 08:02:20 AM
At least Google News labels the BBspot article "satire".

Looks like bbspot has bagged a few more bbelievers. :^)

MORB 2006-11-28 08:04:17 AM
submitter, I guess it's all confusing for you, but anyone with some curiosity would have wondered about the silly foot picture next to the article.

Hovering it with your mouse reveals the following words of wisdom: "It's funny. Laugh."

Which translate into the following tag on fark: img.fark.com

no wait! hide the comfy chair! The MPAA are coming!

Next362 2006-11-28 08:07:45 AM
...should have a 'Satire' tag. cause, it is a satire, look for the original link.

/thinks subby should look twice before subbing.

dergeist 2006-11-28 08:08:07 AM
This article has had some powerful effects. It made it on DIGG, then Slashdot, now FARK. Satire or not you gotta respect the amazing viral quality it has.

I think the reason is that it's so believable given the bullsh*t we've seen from the **AA's in the past. This almost seems par for the course, and so people really don't question it. Industry execs have long been known for their spacey, out-of-touch-with-reality views, so why not charge for big TVs in your house or having your friends over to view? It almost makes too much sense...in fact, while we laugh, I bet there are fat industry execs lighting up Cubans with $100 bills slapping each other on the back of their Armani suits saying "pure genius! Call the senators!"

TownDrunk 2006-11-28 08:08:54 AM
I have a decent 6.1 surround system, but sadly still a 27" TV. I'm safe.

xotakuotaconx 2006-11-28 08:09:10 AM
Hmm, if the MPAA defined a home theatre as a "theatre", then perhaps the $50 fee would be worth it if they would send the films.

It smells like...

Betacamman 2006-11-28 08:10:04 AM
It was exceptionally well written. I almost bought it until the end where it finally dawned on me that this might be satire. Then I saw the source. Note: Always check source _first_.

Linking between fark and /. seems kind of redundant.

Frehar 2006-11-28 08:11:01 AM
Back when dirt was young there was an ad on TV for a new razor that had two blades, one for pullung out the hair and a second for cutting it.

Saturday Night Live did a sketch based on this commercial where the razor had *3* blades. Everyone had a good laugh.

Now there are commercials for blades with five blades. At first I thought this was a gag.

Sometimes satire is just a prediction of the future.

pugsleythegreat 2006-11-28 08:11:36 AM
dude, would any of you doubt this if it happened?

/hah I'm fairly surprised the MPAA or RIAA doesn't levy taxes on televisions and CD players and the like yet.

//mark my words.

SandwichMan 2006-11-28 08:12:30 AM
Ah, satire: predicting the future with a wink and a laugh.

SandwichMan 2006-11-28 08:13:58 AM
And, if the MPAA wasn't a racket to begin with, we wouldn't have required a 'satire' tag to qualify the story as BS.

parkerlewis 2006-11-28 08:14:10 AM
I'll just argue that my chairs are NOT comfortable.

Even if this was real, I'd like to see the MPAA try to search every home in America for big tv's.

Ivor 2006-11-28 08:14:14 AM
Don't forget on this side of the pond we have to buy an annual license for our TVs.

And at £131.50 that's sadly not a joke.

EvilAce195 2006-11-28 08:14:14 AM
Hrm... this is why I'm plannin on buying an island just a little ways out in international water TAKE THAT MPAA!!

The_Religious_Left 2006-11-28 08:19:49 AM
Your honour, ladies and gentlemen of the jury. The facts of this case hinge upon one important question. Is the chair we see before us today 'comfy'? While it certainly has the appearance of a finely crafted lazy-boy, several features of this chair clearly make for an uncomfortable sitting experience.

First ladies and gentleman, note the strong, almost pungent odour of stale farts, old beer and sweat. I invite you to sit down and note how this releases a blast of stinky air into the general area. It practically brings tears to one's eyes. I ask you, is this comfy? Ladies and gentlemen of the jury you must acquit!

"So you think you are strong because you can survive the soft cushions. Well, we shall see. Biggles! Put her in the Comfy Chair! Now -- you will stay in the Comfy Chair until lunch time, with only a cup of coffee at eleven. Is that really all it is?"

"Yes, lord."

"I see. I suppose we make it worse by shouting a lot, do we? Confess, woman. Confess! Confess! Confess! Confess!"

"I confess!"

"Not you!"

Funny, but sadly, not completely "unpossible"

I remember when this was satire too:

imminent drowning of the net in sticky brown liquid

Death by Misadventure 2006-11-28 08:25:16 AM
Everybody should listen to their local radio disc jockeys today and see if they report on this as actual news. I remember sometime last year the Don and Mike Show and DC 101reported a satire story off of fark as actual news. It had something to do with Windows being able to get viruses without having to be connected to the Interwebs or something like that.

bodrell 2006-11-28 08:25:34 AM
The MPAA has no case. Everyone knows it's not a true theatre if there aren't 15 minutes of commercials forced down our throats prior to the film. And a PSA telling us how the poor Hollywood people will starve if we make copies of overpriced DVDs.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility though. The FBI warning at the beginning of films does include unauthorized exhibition.

Does it? I never read it and you can't fast forward past it, so I take the opportunity to make a tom collins.

Basically I'm blaming the FBI for my bad (but delicious) gin habits, yes.

For which we get 9 national TV channels, god knows how many regional variations, 10+ national radio channels and the BBC world service. All without commercial breaks.

It's a bargain.

Props to submitter (Drew?) in coming up with another way to get BBSpot traffic.
