Best part apart skydiving is watching the newbs crash into the ground,,,,At about 5 mph that is,Brakes are for sissies.,,..Or release the main shute for no good reason and gently drift 2 miles up the farking fields.

skinink 2006-11-12 07:03:24 PM

But the good part is, now he'll be able to battle that pesky Spider Man using his new Electro powers!

I bet that tickled something fierce.

I thought power lines were supposed to cut power to the line after a sudden surge automatically..I've seen countless squirrels get toasted and the power to the entire neighborhood shuts off instantly.

/but then again this was in Florida

I came here to make a shocking comment and was thusly beaten to the punch.

Is this story current?

Hope he's amped up for his next jump.

RockIsDead 2006-11-12 07:17:38 PM
It's not the fall it's the amps.

Huxley71 2006-11-12 07:20:27 PM
Norm, What's your DZ? I'm at Pepperell (120 jumps).

Theeagle: do you jump? If so what? I actually LIKE doing cross country jumps (exit at 13500, pull at around 10000), as opposed to my horrible attempt at sitflying.

Funkmaster Frank 2006-11-12 07:20:32 PM
Is he a musician? If so, do his amps go to 11?

It's not the fall, it's the amps that hertz.

There, finished that pun up for ya.

I am sure this incident gives one time to rethink life.

Huxley71 2006-11-12 07:30:34 PM
Oh, and "brakes are for sisses..."

You're a swooper, right? If so, you're using brakes, aren't 'cha. If not, you're not really sure about which you speak, are ya?

On a no wind day, I move about 15 to 20 mph on final. And that's with a ginormous, floaty (slow) Sabre2 210.

I did one of those for the jump right before I got my A license back in 2001. The view from up there is amazing.

I've been lucky with that (so far, knock wood). What was your mal?

AntiNorm [TotalFark] 2006-11-12 08:25:03 PM
Hard as hell opening, busted some lines and caused internal damage to the main. It was a few years ago.

mongo78 2006-11-12 08:35:32 PM
I thought power lines were supposed to cut power to the line after a sudden surge automatically

The system protection may not see a low-current, high-impedance fault. I'm just guessing here, but aren't parachutes made out of nylon, which is a prety poor conductor?

One more good reason why you shouldn't mess with downed power lines.

Bad body position or bad pack job, do you think?

AntiNorm [TotalFark] 2006-11-12 08:42:42 PM
It wasn't on one of my pack jobs. That was an old rig I was borrowing that wasn't exactly known for opening soft anyway. My pack jobs tend to have nice and soft openings (I still flat pack).

beegirllw [TotalFark] 2006-11-12 09:00:46 PM
Jeez, I wondered what the hell was going on, out power goes out all the time here. We get it from the mainland on what is call the Tie-line. I just went and took a nap, damn I had no idea some dude was tangled up in it. Glad he is ok, I did a tandem with that group about 4 years ago. It rocked....but not that much.

And if you've ever had your "keys" tangled up in live power lines, you know just how painful that can be.

I always think of my brother when I read these things, he's got 7000+ jumps now (he's a jumpmaster). He's very safe as an instructor, but I know he still base jumps too...

cynicalbastard 2006-11-13 12:26:15 AM
When I was 16 I did a few jumps. They were with military-style chutes, I think T-9 designation? I won't say they landed hard but man am I glad I was only 150 lbs back then.

To all of you who enjoy a laugh at the expense of a fellow man's severe pain - thanks for your sympathy.
