Lawns there don't very sexist.

Socialism at work.

It probably took months of debate to reach a conclusion, and will likely cost thousands of euros to implement the change. Meanwhile, Spain remains the dirty uncle of the EU, you know the one who doesn't use deoderant and never washes his clothes?

Road = signs.

Right, cause identifying women with an appearance imposed upon them by a male-dominated world isn't sexist. I'd like to know why these chauvanistic bastards don't think women can wear trousers and have short hair.

I actually think it's more sexist to actually make the distinction. I always considered stick figures on signs gender neutral. This sounds like a waste of money.

I'm also reminded of a cartoon where a woman in slacks and a guy in a kilt are standing in front of the washroom entrances, trying to figure out from the signs which room to use.

/ Tried a few google image queries, couldn't find it.

Also, FTFA:

The council, which said it would ask manufacturers to incorporate female figures in their signs, would not cost taxpayers a penny.

That's how the article ends...which is too bad, because I'd love to know how they pulled that off.

/we have much to learn from these so-called "Spaniards."

Some of them do. They also wear flannel shirts and drive Ford F-350 pickup trucks.

Maybe there's been loads of "Gosh, the figure on the crossing sign doesn't look anything like me... must mean I should skip merrily out into traffic!" deaths?

Helios1182 2006-11-12 12:46:21 PM
Never once in my life did it even occur to me that the signs could be sexist. In fact, most of the stick people used seem rather asexual.

I actually think it's more sexist to actually make the distinction. I always considered stick figures on signs gender neutral.

What about the stick figures on bathroom doors, though? And lot of crosswalk areas have a man, woman, and child sign. So I don't think they're very neutral.

/That's just me, though.

Wow, lots of resistance to this eh?

Maybe there IS something to it if everyone's so against the idea. If people are so uncomfortable with the idea, that's a good indication that there's something to it.

Personally I think its great - and it WON'T cost taxpayers as the article explicity stated. The signmakers will have to make signs with women on them.

This reminds me of some of the old safety signs mounted in the top basket of Wal-Mart shopping carts (shopping trolley?). It very clearly has a stick figure with a pony tail, and probably a dress and purse. Is Wal-Mart trying to tell me only women shop there and/or women are the ones leaving their kids unattended?

Er, yes it will cost the tax payers. First, there was the cost of this debate.. then they are going to half to take down half the existing signs and put up the new ones -- no doubt with some debate on just which signs to take down. Going forward, someone is going to have to keep track of M/F sign ratio.. and they are going to have store/order two different sets of signs.

What humanity really needs is an agreed upon gender neutral sign -- and we could do with gender neutral pronouns (for whatever reason "it" has far too many connotations of non-human to really be seen as acceptable to use.. heck, we'll use "he/she" in sentences before "it".)

Personally, I don't much care about the signs, but I'm left to wonder what other more important things have been neglected to pursue this Boondoggle.

The cost of the debate is a moot point. I mean they're always debating and talking, that's what councils do. Its not a big deal. Might as well discuss it when you're debating anyhow.

Perhaps it may cost something, but I think its great all the same. Perhaps its just better to replace signs as they fall down or something, but good on 'em.
