I've seen these before. When they fly, they look extremely strange and floppy because most of their wings aren't visible.

Why have Vista when you can look through the wings of a glasswing. Sounds much cheaper for neat effects.

Well, I've been on Fark for... *checks profile* almost five years, and this is the first time I've seen these pics. I guess I've just missed the link before. Very pretty.

This is, I think, the seventh time these pictures were greenlighted.

So why do other butterflies and moths have so much trouble flying if they knock some of the scales off their wings, ending up with transparent spots like these?

Being transparent is great camoflage. The butterflies have apparently found it to their advantage, and evolved that way. (if you don't believe in evolution, just say "God made them that way").

Spiders creep me out too. I'm very glad they don't scale well.
