Overpriced BLACK crap surrenders is much more like it

That's perfectly legal, but I have a feeling it will backfire on them, when someones sets a fire out back in the alley.

Last One Left [TotalFark] 2006-10-01 03:52:16 PM
That's fine by me. I can get "variations" of these from mainland China, and they'll probably be called ECHO, Shawn John and Southpoll (or something like that).

Hahaha, sweet.

"No gangstas and thugs allowed."

Stop dressing like a gangsta and people won't treat you like crap.

mutt 2006-10-01 03:56:52 PM
There are at least two bars where I live that won't let you in if you are wearing a "wife beater". Another one bans sports jerseys.

As long as the ban extends to everyone it's not discrimination.

monty666 [TotalFark] 2006-10-01 03:57:05 PM
I only wear Ol' Roy jeans.

HomerButt 2006-10-01 03:59:32 PM
The bar recently displayed a dress code that stated: No Baggy Clothes. No Chains. No Sunglasses. No Grills.

The code also prohibits certain clothing labels: Southpole, ECKO, ENYCE, Sean Jean, Phat Farm, FUBU, ETC.

Well, I guess it's more polite than saying "no blacks allowed", which is what this really means.

I only wear Buckwheat Jeans. They're ooooooo-tay!

From the article:

Privately owned businesses such as On The Rocks have the right to refuse business to anyone.

Deal with it, folks.

Wow. The more you know...

I was at a Peebles this week, saw the SouthPole stuff and really liked it. Looked comfortable, etc, etc.

Kinda glad a 41 year old white boy didn't lay down the cash for this. What, oh what would the neighbors have said?

Except there are plenty of "blacks" who don't feel the need to wear any of those things, and would probably be welcome.

As previously mentioned, it's more of a No Gangstas policy.

MisterTweak 2006-10-01 06:40:04 PM
Banana hammocks and plaid golf pants, however, are still permitted.

Undertow101 [TotalFark] 2006-10-01 07:06:09 PM
I worked security/barback at a Denver sports bar a few years back. They had sort of the same policy. It also included any Raiders football attire whatsoever. Good god that was the worst part of the job. Telling a bunch of drunken, rabid Raiders fans that they couldn't come in the bar.

I'm pretty sure it means "No thugs and wannabes allowed"

There's a difference.

Eh, I see just as many white guys wearing the South Pole stuff around here. As annoying as I think the namesake is, my boyfriend has Sean Jean jeans because they're the only brand that fit him well and we got them on sale.

Of course, one of the trends here is for young black people to wear NASCAR team jackets - bet that's something you won't see banned in Nashville anytime soon.

Damn, two Nashville area stories nearly back to back. We love our adult bookstores and bars!

Right to spell surrenders.

FLMountainMan 2006-10-01 10:20:28 PM
This sounds pretty difficult to enforce for a bouncer. It will disproportionately affect black folks, but if the business is willing to take the economic risk, so be it.

EL_FABREZ 2006-10-01 10:20:49 PM
They must feel conflicted now that Starter and Tommy Hillfiger are being sold at Walmart.

devilsnight 2006-10-01 10:22:47 PM
I went to a bar in Columbus, OH with a similar policy; this one didn't allow jerseys. Gave the bouncer at the door an extra $20, got in, everything went fine. Hooray for Bribery Skills +1!

FarkinFarker 2006-10-01 10:23:46 PM
fark that shiat.

novakkm 2006-10-01 10:23:49 PM
Yeah, I can see it now, the bar on the other side of town:
"No popped collars. No plaid bermuda shorts. No aviator sunglasses.
The following brands are prohibited: Von Dutch, Hollister, Abercrombie, Eddie Bauer, American Eagle, Polo, Ralph Lauren...."

Thegreaser 2006-10-01 10:23:50 PM

Still not too late for the Nashville area trifecta.

How hard can it be?

Shiksababy 2006-10-01 10:24:51 PM
If they want to be exclusive and lose business that is their perogative. Toolish as it is, they are leaving the market open for someone else to snatch up. That's capitalism.

SchlingFo 2006-10-01 10:24:54 PM
HomerButt: Well, I guess it's more polite than saying "no blacks allowed", which is what this really means.

Not at all.

A white person with FUBU jeans and a Sean Jean shirt on wouldn't be allowed in.

Likewise, a black person wearing a pair of khakis and a dress shirt would be allowed in.

So why didn't they ban Abercrombie, Aeropastle, etc?

That's farking bullshiat. There's loads of little white and off-white gangstas running around where I live looking like a whole lot of asshole. Oh, but I get your point. Anytime the anonymous voice is white and pissed about shiatty behaviour it's obviously due to racism.

If they want to ban blacks from their bar, why don't they just do what the Canadians do?

I checked out the bar's website (it's late, I'm bored) and it's a farkin' rock n' roll bar. What kinda thugs want to listen to rock music anyway? Moot point, says I.

All the white "thugs" in my neighborhood wear oversized white t shirts. They look retarded.

Gang Trash. They don't give a fark what goes on in the club or bar - all they want to do is pick a place and make that their turf. And what says there ISN'T a mix of people that don't want gang trash ruining their hangout?

Oh - and btw I am a white chick that wears FUBU because I am tall and they farking FIT. I also like the designs - and love baggy, weird clothes in general (and Dr. Martin's, and no I am NOT a farking skin head).

Opiate of the Lasses 2006-10-01 10:37:34 PM
This is perfectly OK in theory. I'm black and I don't ever wear the "thug" wear, and neither do lots of others, so it wouldn't affect us. A business is free to keep out the rabble if it wants.
BUT, given where it is, given the state of relations in this country, given that they don't have what's seen as stereotypical "redneck wear" disallowed, one has to question their motives. In a vacuum, sure it seems ok, bet let's not bullshiat ourselves here.

It would be so much simpler and less controversial to list what is allowed, instead of what's not. Say business casual/formal wear only etc.

/racism is stupid, no matter which race it comes from
//racists are just too lazy to hate people individually like I do

You know, I currently work at a bar, and we have this night called Wild Women Wednesdays. Used to be a fun time, lots of college kids, lots of hot women getting wild, as the name implied. But over time, the night became ghetto as hell, and it got to be a very rough crowd. We even had to hire two offduty police to stand at the door alongside us bouncers (only reason we still HAVE bouncers is for inside the bar...the cops cannot set foot inside).

We've been trying for a long time to come up with a suitable dress code to weed out the bad elements. And it's as some commenters have mentioned above, all we want is to separate the decent people from the gangbangers and thugs (who, by the way, can have any color of skin, not just black people). So far the best we've come up with is no do-rags/skullcaps, no jerseys, no tanktops/sleeveless shirts, no grillz, and hats must be worn pointing straight forward or straight back, not cocked to either side. The problem we've had is figuring out what specific things will weed out what we want.

As it stands right now, we just have a sign that clearly states our right to refuse service to anyone, for any reason, and the boss has told us door guys to just go by our gut instinct. If they look like a thug or a gangbanger, refuse them and point to the sign. If they look like a decent human being, no matter the color of their skin, then they're fine. We tell them "You're coming to a bar, to meet women and have a good time. Dress to impress, don't dress like you just came out of the hood."

Anyone have any other suggestions? Honestly I'm tired of having to justify to people why I don't feel like I should let them in, and that it has nothing to do with the color of their skin, so much as it has to do with how they carry themselves. I feel like a dick doing it, and I'm just waiting for someone to try and start a fight over it or throw down the racism card.
