Headline is misleading. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Mob working with Al Qaeda. Obviously. "We are looking at this very aggressively," says bureau.

There's the proper headline, asinine submitter.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2006-10-01 07:01:36 PM
Oh, and who exactly are the Sporanos?

Now the mob can be labeled 'enemy combatants'.

I though Bin Laden was a CIA guy anyway originally? Maybe they'd better look there for a nexus.

And Saddam, was he not CIA backed as well? Another nexus perhaps?

And what about that Bush guy and Rumbsfeld and all their business dealings with Saudis?

Nexi everywhere.

So now FBI looks to television for leads?

Are they going to bomb heaven looking for WMDs next?

/south park reference

SaladMonkey 2006-10-01 07:56:32 PM
to clarify: the latest season of sopranos featured the mob selling credit card numbers to arabic people who might be tied to terrorists.

studebaker hoch 2006-10-01 07:57:04 PM
The mob is smarter than to sell terrorists WMD's. Bad for business.

the govt is out witch hunting for terrorists and if the govt suspects the mob is involved, the mob best be careful.

Here it is: everyone the GOP/government doesn't like is collaborating with Osama: the mob, the teamsters, drug lords, librals and whomever else they can think of. That way they can prosecute them all in one tidy package. Welcome to 1984 farksticks.

Fark Me Runnin 2006-10-01 08:03:06 PM
Step 1: Find an article on the internet and come up with a mediocre headline.
Step 2: Go back and misspell a word in the headline and/or use incorrect grammar.
Step 3: Get greenlit.

Zaphodius 2006-10-01 08:04:07 PM
More pre-election back alley action... find osama... under which cup is osama... a winner every time...

Richard Pye 2006-10-01 08:09:07 PM
Greenlighting articles with mispelled headlines makes you look stupid and lazy.

tandkquinn 2006-10-01 08:09:17 PM
Noooooooooooo.... this is all about using the brand spanking new antiterrorism laws for routine law enforcement purposes. The fourth amendment surrenders, then moves to Canada.

studebaker hoch 2006-10-01 08:10:42 PM
Here's the deal:

The more people that post on Fark, the better for business. Greenlighting an article with an obvious grammar/spelling error ensures that those who are interested in pointing out such mistakes will all jump in and add content.

It isn't "the best" links that get greenlit, it's "the most likely to have a lot of replies".

And replies are something Fark can sell to advertisers as proof that people are viewing the page.

/kaCHING!

Step 4: Profit

inkdrinker 2006-10-01 08:21:06 PM
Or maybe it's another attempt to link a terrorist bogeyman to another topic to justify an expansion of power and an infusion of money.

shift_DAWG 2006-10-01 08:22:28 PM
I don't claim to be connected, but the Italian-American "legitimate business men" that I have known (2) were vehemently patriotic; and if one were to imply to them that they were involved with supporting AQ, I suspect he'd meet with an -ahem!- accident and have a little trouble walking afterward.

SpaceAgeTomato 2006-10-01 08:28:26 PM

Argh, what a terrible article. It is pure troll.

Though there is no direct evidence yet of organized crime collaborating with terrorists, ...

Ok, so the bottom line is: no evidence yet

... the first hints of a connection surfaced in a recent undercover FBI operation

Ahh, there are whispers on the street?

Agents stopped a man with alleged mob ties from selling missiles to an informant posing as a terrorist middleman.

Err, no. It was a sting. The only terrorist in sight was an informer, pretending to be one. But nevermind, all of this recently passed anti-terrorism law will help them in their search!

The new strategy involves an analysis of nationwide criminal investigations, particularly white collar crime, side by side with intelligence and terrorist activity.

Isn't this from the same government that has repeatedly assured us that these fancy new laws would never be used for mundane law enforcement purposes? Note that the only other evidence for mob-terrorist connections is another informer, "...a high-level Mafia figure, who was cooperating with authorities", who told them the Mafia would be willing to assist terrorists. Well, the nice thing about an ex-Mafia figure who's turned states evidence is they will say whatever you want them to say; their life depends on you protecting them.

From the CNN article on this I'm thinking they are trying to link them to Russian or Eastern European organizations.

Overseas the most active ground level groups I've seen are usually the Morrocans and Lebaneese.

I still think it is more of an election year bid than a genuine effort, but they do have to at least look ito such claims...

This is certainly the scarier view of what is going on, and considering the current DOJ's record on Constitutional rights I would tend to be more willing to believe this than say 6 years ago.

Is the FBI watching season six? Do they not know it's a TV show? They're not really stealing credit card numbers from sleezy motels to sell to the terrorists.

I guess the IRS and RICO act just ain't getting the job done anymore. Now Italian-American entrepreneurs are terrorists. That'll make them dissappear so the government can take over.
