It's not so much about keeping safe, it's about laying the heavy hand of government on the back of your neck.

Just like torture is a mode of social control.

Why the conservatives aren't up in arms is a mystery.

2wolves: Why the conservatives aren't up in arms is a mystery.

because most of them aren't conservative, and the rest seem to be too afraid to stand up to their party and say that it is wrong.

I'm a conservative, but not a Republican. I think they are wrong and I have said it many times in the past. I also don't think that the Republicans are conservative by any stretch of the imagination, at least they haven't been for a number of years.

MisterTweak 2006-09-26 07:52:37 PM
The conservatives - those guys who balanced the budget, trimmed government spending, and worked on leveling the playing field? They left office in 2000.

for what it's worth, those of us in TSA think this whole quart ziploc thing is the most idiotic thing to come out of HQ to date.

Good Grief that headline was incoherent! Only after reading the thread did I figure out what was going on.

/Too lazy to RTFA, of course.

The difference between prison and the airport is exactly nothing.

By the way. Full clothes off anal/vaginal strip searches are illegal. Especially domestic. And without just cause or reasonable cause or Nice big breasts lady.

I have one question for people saying this guy is a hero. Aren't you the same people who lashed out at the arab dude who was detained for having arabic on his t-shirt?

DistendedPendulusFrenulum 2006-09-26 09:25:42 PM
Actually, it's hard to say if you have an inalienable right to air travel. If the airlines won't take you, you're probably still free to take the train.

OTOH, it really is interesting how due process and all that have changed.

.

M-G 2006-09-26 09:28:41 PM
I can see why the TSA is limiting quantities of products, because they still want to make it seem like they didn't over-react over the stupid 'plan' in the UK. But WTF is up with requiring things in a quart ziploc?

Vosh 2006-09-26 09:28:49 PM
If I were looking for people who wanted to blow up my plane, or fly it into buildings, I would pay attention to baggage that had, " -american authority figure- is an idiot" scrawled on it, even if it were true. I would not be an asshole normally, but I'd play one just to feel out the person responsible. This person would feel all smart, clever and superior and follow me over to my desk, and I'd roll my eyes because this person thinks that what happened is really what happened.

I wonder how this story would go if the lady cop told it. Probably a little less heroic.

gradatim 2006-09-26 09:29:13 PM
Should've asked for the IDs of the TSA prick and the cops, so he'd have names (or at least ID numbers) and he could report them to their superiors. Especially the TSA tard, since he started it all and made those comments about basic rights not applying at airport security checkpoints. Not that write a letter would do a damn bit of good, but it might be somewhat satisfying.

The conservatives - those guys who balanced the budget, trimmed government spending, and worked on leveling the playing field? They left office in 2000.

"Leveling the playing field" is a conservative ideology? No.

Not to say the current crop of politicians is conservative, but come on now.

As to the article, sounds to me like the guy was trying to be dick, and he got a little trouble for it. He wasn't arrested, his property wasn't confiscated. He just took his beef with the Director and the TSA policy and tried to use it to get the goats of a few underlings who couldn't change the policies if they wanted to. Trying to piss them off when they are just doing their jobs, then getting all huffy about it, is a pretty petty thing to do.

I hope someone comes to him and causes him all sorts of job-related grief, 'just to see what happens'.

This is not a defense of the policies of the government as a whole or the TSA. This is a defense of the average underpaid schmuck who has to deal with jackasses with chips on their shoulder.

jjorsett 2006-09-26 09:30:20 PM
Congratulations for exercising your rights. By the way, you're probably now on the "strip search this guy whenever you encounter him" list. Let's hope it was worth it to you.

Walker [TotalFark] 2006-09-26 09:30:50 PM
The moral of this story is: Don't try to argue constitutional law with TSA agents and Sheriffs Deputies. It is like trying to explain nuclear physics to a 2-year-old. That being said the TSA Director is indeed an idiot.

I checked the updated TSA Prohibited and Permitted List today.

Pudding is now banned. WTF?
12" knitting needles to skewer flight attendants necks are still OK.
Yogurt or gel like food substances are banned.
7" long screw drivers for more neck skewing action are still allowed.
Gel shoe inserts are still banned but gel filled bra's are OK.
You can have a 3oz bottle of shampoo but not 4oz but you can put 2 of them in the baggie to make 6oz. Cuckoo.
4 books of matches are OK, 5 books of matches are forbidden. What can you do with 5 books of matches that you can't do with 4?

Silly rules. It's all just an illusion to make you feel safe. In other news buy stock in Ziplock bags.

AirForceVet [TotalFark] 2006-09-26 09:31:17 PM
Amusing how people sometimes over-react to the simpliest thing, like calling the boss an idiot. I didn't know Kip was so beloved by his subordinates.

Obviously the TSA screeners lost their cool. And, alas, the cops had to play along with the situation as rolled along.

Oh, Nutcase, go ahead and wear your GEORGE BUSH SUCKS T-shirt. But only if you're NOT in a hurry to catch your plane.

I love the part where the Sherrif says, "yoou are not under arrest, you are being detained."

This is a defense of the average underpaid schmuck who has to deal with jackasses with chips on their shoulder.

More accurately, it's a defense of the minimum wage monkeys who get off on detaining someone because he gave them shiat even though they have no reason whatsoever to suspect him of anything illegal.

"Pissing a TSA employee off" is not proper grounds for detainment, and any TSA employee who detains someone for it ought to be fired and charged with harassment.

DrCocktosten 2006-09-26 09:33:40 PM
So TSA are idiots; So are people who play around at security gates.

He had the right to do it, and wasnt arrested.
On the other hand, he made himself stick out, so they checked it out. Someone bored/loony enough to care to do something like this, instead of the rest of us just trying to fly, could be someone you might take a second look at. This is also just his story. The supervisor sounds like a dick, but I think i would expect a TSA sup to be a dick. Thats why i dont go around trying to meet them.

I think it'd work better if you added a Cavuto at the end.

"I am a terrorist?"

That way you're making a political statement by asking a rhetorical question about the treatment you're subjected to at the airport.

It isn't? These are the guys who are looking out for people who might cause trouble on planes. Someone with an axe to grind comes along, and you would just put your fingers in your ears, yelling "LALALALALALA!!!" and wave them onto the plane with 100+ people on it, and not give them a second thought?

He went there to start some trouble, he got some. And you disapprove of the workers. I won't be putting you in charge of my security anytime soon, especially when I am trapped on a plane with no way out.

I would argue both instances are protected under the constitution. However, if you know something you do under your first amendment rights will provoke a response, don't act surprised when it does just that.

I see from your link that I can not carry on my magnificent pyrex dish full of green jello with pineapple rings in it.

This causes me some dismay.

What the American people need to realize is, we were eating jello on airplanes way before we started the freedom agenda in the middle east. We cant stop now. We will not.

t3knomanser 2006-09-26 09:45:25 PM
Air travel is not an "inalienable right"- but the carriers are the ones who have the right to deny passengers entry. For the Government to step in and start throwing peeps off the plane- it's like the Government saying you're not allowed to drive on the road- even though you have a valid license and your car is registered and passed inspection, you're a security risk and not allowed to drive. And there's no way to challenge this in court- you have to go through our own bereaucratic nightmare to get off the list.

//Real conservative.

phelano 2006-09-26 09:45:31 PM
This guy should have been put down. It's bad enough the TSA has to deal with thousands of sets of stank-ass feet every day, but now this tool has to come in and screw with them. I'm all for freedom of speech, but you have to be ready to accept the consequences, not go around whining about them. Someone who goes through an airport secutry screening with a note bad-mouthing the head of the department is damn sure gonna get held up for questioning. If he doesn't, then the TSA isn't doing their job correctly. Profiling isn't about the color of someone's skin, it's about looking for the next nutjob pro-actively, no matter how many frequent flier clubs he is a part of.

/Wow, Caffeine makes me rant...

So, what, we should start revoking the freedom of speech based on what someone *might* do?

we already have laws covering misconduct on airplanes. we don't need Drooly McBagHandler deciding that he's suddenly a Federal Pre-crime Detective.
