That will bring back serious memories for me. I never listened to Stern, but he happened to be on the radio as I left my DC-area place of employment which suddenly seemed like not the safest place to be.

An excerpt:

HOWARD: So yeah, apparently a couple of planes flew into the World Trade Center... but back to you, washed-up porn actress. DAMN you have a nice rack.

ROBIN: Howard!

SOME GUY THAT GETS PAID SIT THERE AND RANDOMLY LAUGH: HAHAHAHAHAH!

HOWARD: What? She does! Just look at those things... do you do anal baby?

SOME GUY THAT GETS PAID SIT THERE AND RANDOMLY LAUGH: HAHAHAHAH!

When Robin was getting the first feeds that something was up, and was thinking she it was a copter or small aircraft that had hit, I turned on the TV news.

Kept the volume off and continued to listen to Howie. It was oddly comforting. He did a good, decent job that day.

billyclo [TotalFark] 2006-09-08 05:26:03 PM
Hero? Put it on E for free. What a cock, looking to make a profit off of 9/11. This man is a scumbag. I guess he has to buy feed for Beth "Mr Ed" O.

billyclo [TotalFark] 2006-09-08 05:26:52 PM
Oh, and if I recall he made a joke about it, then went on to talk about how he could have gotten with Pam Anderson.

He sucks

jre 2006-09-08 05:36:03 PM
He was still on in Toronto at the time. It was compelling having live coverage as it was occuring of people reacting.

SpongBub 2006-09-08 05:40:53 PM
Gaboo, thanks for ruining it for me.

Actually, I also randomly had it on my radio and heard almost two hours of the show, it's how I first learned about what was going on.

And he never once did that, he was bone cold serious the whole time. I gained a lot of respect for him that day.

I have an MP3 of this. At one point, Baba Booey or Robin or somebody says "Saddam Hussein" and Stern, known for his astute and insightful political commentary, immediately says "he had nothing to do with this."

interesting.

Altoid 2006-09-08 08:02:58 PM
I don't know how many of you were listening to his show that morning, but when the first plane hit the tower, everyone (him included) assumed it was an accident. Yes, he went on with the show. When the second plane hit, the show took a rather dramatic turn.

I'm no Stern fan, but what he did that day was nowhere near as awful as some of you make it out to be.

I think I might even still have an .mp3 of that show. If I can find it, and there's any interest, i'll put up a torrent.

If you have OnDemand service, it's free.

At least, it is on Adelphia.

My bad. Its part of a "package"

maybe next he can show footage of when he went to Gary's dad's funeral.

Oh......wait. Nevermind

Mugato [TotalFark] 2006-09-08 09:30:10 PM
Anyone who acted heartfelt and serious that day was considered brave and comforting. Everyone wanted to fellate John Stewart for crying on The Daily Show. Whatever. Even Bush was universally loved and admired that day.

Ecobuckeye 2006-09-08 09:30:47 PM
Howard is irrelevant. He's been out of the news for so long.

Leave it to the "shock jock" to attempt to personally capitalize on 9-11.

Scumbag.

HulkHands [TotalFark] 2006-09-08 09:31:02 PM
Yeah so I was listening to Howard Stern and he was talking to some chicks that sounded really hot. I can't wait to watch the video on E! and stare at the big black bars covering their breasts.

/Fark Howard Stern

Reverend Otis 2006-09-08 09:31:31 PM
I listened to Rick Dees that morning. Pre-historic blowhard that he is, he also had it going on that morning and I never changed the station.

atomsmoosher 2006-09-08 09:31:39 PM
I'm no Stern fan, but what he did that day was nowhere near as awful as some of you make it out to be.

I listened on occasion and just happened to listen that morning. They actually provided great coverage at the time, they had on all the other news tv and radio stations on and could give you a good bit of coverage.

Heard it first on Howard (on my headphones), gathered the rest of the office into the boss's office and turned on Good Morning America just in time to see the second plane hit.

sidgoop 2006-09-08 09:32:02 PM
Real hero, charging money for it. Suck it, big nose.

He stinks, and I don't like him.

rancidPlasma 2006-09-08 09:32:42 PM
the MP3 is flying around the net.. Earlier in the show they're talking about Howard going on a f'n date with Pamella Anderson. Next minute the planes hit, and like a lot of people, they thought it was a freak accident. Then the 2nd one hit and all hell breaks loose.

waiting4godot 2006-09-08 09:36:51 PM
I'm getting a flashback of listening to some radio station that day.. and a guy calling to say everying was good -- that they were waiting for firefighters to rescue them and not to worry. Mix in some "I love yous" and whatnot.. and then.. the tower feel. I looked at my office-mate and said, "Was that caller.. in that tower?" He nodded. We sat in silence for quite a while after that.. quite a long while.

/could see the smoke from the office window

Malinois 2006-09-08 09:38:17 PM
"its most shocking event."

I would think the dismantlement of Boss Tweed's graft system within NYC was greater...and a larger lesson to be gained through history.

But hey, go with what you know. ;)

RumMunkey 2006-09-08 09:39:26 PM
I have it on tape. I used to listen to Stern on my drive to work, but then record the rest of the show on a tape so I would have something to listen to on the way home.

He was going on about how he could have nailed Pam Anderson. When somebody came in and mentioned what happened.

They all thought it was an accident. Somebody on the show said "How did that take so long, eh? With all these planes and all the builings it was bound to happen eventually" and somebody else pointed out that the ESB was hit by a plane decades ago.

Once they got an idea of what was actually going on, they covered it very well actually. I remember Howard saying how he could see smoke.

He then went on to say (very early on, before the buildings fell even) that "we know who's responsible for this...Bin Laden". That might be what rickythepenguin is remembering.

I have the unedited tape, from the actual live broadcast but I'm not sure how complete it is; if I remember right I may have actually even flipped from side A to side B in pretty good time (sometimes there would be time missing in these tapes if I wasn't in my office when a side finished recording, but I think I was on 9/11). I got to work probably around 7 or 7:30, and would have started recording not long after that.

I know I kept it because of the importance of that day. I'll look for it if people are needing an unedited account.

ozziegt 2006-09-08 09:39:47 PM
I listened to some of his coverage a few weeks ago. People who think he was some kind of hero and had great coverage are idiots. It was filled with hate mongering, fear mongering, stereotypical crap in quite a few places. I know emotions were running wild but I am almost sure he was still thinking about ratings as he covered it.

Hero charging money...

dougiezerosag 2006-09-08 09:40:52 PM
I'm a huge Stern fan and get Howard TV... I watched it this morning and the 9/11 episode isn't THAT great.

It's interesting to watch their reactions as they learn what's happening in real time, but most of it is fans calling in saying that "towelheads" should be beaten and Howard rants about blowing up the entire middle east.

His views sure have changed since.... and all it took was him reading one Al Franken book.

justafarkingchef 2006-09-08 09:41:43 PM
I hate howard, but it was wierd he was right there (at Scores) during the attacks. Any radio show that close to the carnage would have been interesting, but his was there. Prolly a cool bit of historic perspective if Hoo Hoo didn't edit out too much....

ozziegt 2006-09-08 09:41:54 PM
Just to add, I think in times of intense stress and emotion, people's true colors come out. And they definitely did on the Howard Stern show.

A year later, in 2002, Stern replayed the 9/11 broadcast in its entirety. But that's the last time most of his listeners have heard that show. It deserves to be archived in the Museum of Radio and Television Broadcasting.

Does it?

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2006-09-08 09:48:07 PM
He got screwed in the national media after spending days working and never stopping, right in the middle of Manhattan, while David Letterman got accolades for showing up for work a week later.

studebaker hoch 2006-09-08 09:48:11 PM
9/11 was so five years ago. I wish we'd get over it. we got sucker punched, sure, and that smarts, but it's no reason to go completely spazolla for the rest of the night.

Tiamat 2006-09-08 09:48:55 PM
Christ! Bad!

Will this balance out, considering that you've funded the IRA for 50 years? If not, that would be injustice.

Also, anyone acting as though anyone reporting during that terrible time is a hero in the spirit of Murrow during the London Blitz of WW2 should just stop now.

I like Stern, but goddamnit I wish you fanboys would stop acting as though he's ethereal.

I bet Stern's 9/11 broadcast involves him throwing baloney on the arse of a arabic woman wearing a burka, because she's trying to get some implants ....

Jeeze Submitter.

I'm a Sirius subscriber and Stern fan like the next guy... but can you quit sucking on his cock for about 5 minutes and write a headline that's not so biased?

/I enjoyed listening to last weekend's broadcast.

iansmith 2006-09-08 09:53:13 PM
I don't like Howard Stern. Not because I think he is a dumb, gross idiot. I think he is a smart, talented guy... who has chosen to make his money by being rude and insulting and making the world that much more uncaring and mean.

This just makes me dislike him MORE, because it is proof that he is capable of being a positive influence and chooses to instead take the low road.

What a waste of talent. I hope one day he wakes up like Gates did and spends his money and talent on helping those in need.

Hey now, that's not fair.
We all know that semen farts are inherently hilarious.

Hoo Hoo Robin. I invented 9/11

Jin Verde 2006-09-08 09:56:31 PM
So Stern's charging money for people to listen. That's nothing compared to all the times politicians of any stripe (but I'm thinking really of the egregious Bush & Co.) bring up 9/11 for political gain.

I see nothing wrong in remembering 9/11 and celebrating the heroes and/or the fallen. We should. But I think that it's horribly tacky and cheap to use 9/11 for political gain in the slimey way the current administration does. Politicians of all stripes do it, but Bush has really used it a lot to "win the hearts and minds" of his followers.

Just wanted to repeat Gabo's comment. It is Stern's show broken down into a few sentences perfectly
