Sorry, Steve, it was only a matter of time.

Skail [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:29:51 AM
Five nearly-identical headlines aiming for nearly-identical URLs. Do I hear ten?

The NaSkAr [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:32:16 AM
holy crap, that is sad. I liked the guy

ArbitraryConstant 2006-09-04 12:33:07 AM
I'm going to hell for laughing, but a man that makes a career out of finding and provoking dangerous animals is simply begging to become a martyr to Darwin.

3 more already. My money is on over 25

Not surprisingly, www.crocodilehunter.com.au is farked.

Again, a sad day for TV. But it was just a matter of time...

ayatollah of rock-n-rollah: "Not surprisingly, www.crocodilehunter.com.au is farked."

A lot of the links are really slow. I think Australia is farked.

Darwin's been running a tab on this guy for years.

This was no boat accident!

Eat More Possum: Sorry, Steve, it was only a matter of time.

Exactly what I was thinking. Too bad he's got a kid and a wife.

I wonder if they got it on tape.

I miss Chris Jericho.

helioquake 2006-09-04 12:37:59 AM
Wikipedia on his profile says he reported died of the accident.

How the heck does one get killed by a stingray?

Rustybeth 2006-09-04 12:38:05 AM
Australia isn't farked, we're just in shock. Details are very slow coming in. It only happend about 2 hours ago for us, and that's in a remote area off the north Queendsland coast. It's hard for Americans to understand how remote it really is up there (I'm one! and it's taking living here for 7 years to get it.)

They should feed his child to an alligator in his honour. It's what he would have wanted.

How the heck does one get killed by a stingray?

It stings you.

gas giant 2006-09-04 12:39:59 AM
Frankly, I'm amazed he managed to cheat death for as long as he did.
What a life though. As strange as it may sound, I still envy him for some reason.

aksen [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:40:04 AM
one report i heard was that he had a heart attack because of the sting...

jbc [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:40:19 AM
Who knew that a man's thumb would even fit in a stingray's butthole?

twofeetcia [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:40:38 AM
I guess he should've left it to the professionals

Irwin lived life to its fullest, arm in arm with nature, unlike some of you couch potatoes that speak of Darwin and "matter of time".

This guy was no slouch...he knew what he was doing and knew how to read animals. And the reason he landed the wife was because of what he did and she was into it.

It's always a matter of time. It's what you do until then that matters.

ArbitraryConstant 2006-09-04 12:42:07 AM
Rustybeth: "It only happend about 2 hours ago for us,"

I don't think time travels at a different rate down there. :)

Wow. Not a shock, but sad. I'm with H. G. Pennypacker on the ESPN spot.

helioquake: How the heck does one get killed by a stingray?

If you're playing in traffic. They may be fiberglass, but they can still do damage.

leperboy69 2006-09-04 12:43:33 AM
That's actually rather sad. The man was a bit of a nutter and seen as an embarassment to certain cultural-cringe Australians, but I had a lot of respect for him. I've seen a couple of interviews where he came across as the most decent, down-to-earth bloke. He was a big conservationist too - to the point that he used a lot of the money he made to buy large tracts of land for native wildlife to inhabit.

No, but their clocks spin counterclockwise.

Noah_Tall [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:44:28 AM
This is going to be pretty big news, all over the entertainment networks. So I'm guessing that this time we won't be seeing any newsflashes about it after... um let's say mid November.

tarrant84 2006-09-04 12:44:58 AM
BOOOO!

I loved that guy and his show. :(

:(

Hehaw, we're at 25 already. I win, I win, I win.

peachy92 [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:45:00 AM
It's on CNN's front page as an alert. I was hoping this was a hoax. :(

The Fonz [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:45:21 AM
Sad.

Just a matter of moments until someone mentions his wife being available. Getting a stinky old wet shoe ready to slap them upside the head when they do.

So you're saying she liked having him jump on her back and tie her jaws shut?

wyohome [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:46:03 AM
The crazy bastard that got eaten by a bear knew what he was doing, too, as did everybody else. Tempting fate for a few years of screen time.

Eat More Possum: Hehaw, we're at 25 already. I win, I win, I win.

Not really... I was going more for the "nearly identical headlines with nearly identical URLs," which abruptly ended at submission number nine with a Yahoo! news submission. Didn't even make it to the ten I'd predicted, with those conditions included.

That said... poor guy. I respect his work and liked watching him (even while secretly rooting for the crocs). I can't say this is unexpected, though... the stingray thing is a bit of a surprise - I would've guessed a saltwater croc would've done him in.

MoonageDaydreamer 2006-09-04 12:47:49 AM
At least he died doing something that he loved.

buttless_pants 2006-09-04 12:47:50 AM
The man had balls of steel. RIP Steve

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:48:14 AM
brokennewz, it's a quarter to three in the afternoon on a working Monday in Australia.

Great Metal Jesus [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:48:28 AM
Poor guy. He may have seemed crazy, but I admired him. It sucks that he's gone. It sucks more for his wife and kid.

ArbitraryConstant 2006-09-04 12:48:32 AM
Eat More Possum: "Hehaw, we're at 25 already. I win, I win, I win."

How many do you think will contain the word "crikey"?

jay_vee 2006-09-04 12:49:02 AM
I would've guessed a saltwater croc would've done him in.

I thought a snake (maybe brown snake). He played pretty fast and loose with a lot of venemous nasties.

Climberdusk 2006-09-04 12:49:09 AM
"It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.

Oh, please tell me he was trying to catch one to torture it for 8 minutes for 13 seconds of real on-camera time and belly flopped onto its barb.

Darwin is mopping up sweat after working on that one for so long.

Don't get me wrong -- It's sad. But he's an idiot for mucking around with wildlife the way he did.

bales [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:49:11 AM
sad. but its not tragic to die doing what you love.

i'm willing to bet, even now, he'd not have made a single change to his decisions.

Skail [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:50:14 AM
I thought a snake (maybe brown snake). He played pretty fast and loose with a lot of venemous nasties.

I saw him swimming, solo, with the salties on one episode, all the time narrating about how dangerous it was and how stupid anyone would have to be to get in the water with them. If it weren't for the narration, I would have expected that to be his eulogy.

leperboy69 2006-09-04 12:51:30 AM
Great Metal Jesus:It sucks more for his wife and kid.

Yeah...I think he had two kids now. I'll bet a squillion dollars his eldest will grow up to follow in her father's footsteps.

Brettster808 [TotalFark] 2006-09-04 12:51:48 AM
Damn, this is sad news. My best to his family during this horrible time.
