I wonder how long it'll be before RIAA sues people for attending live music events?

GrooveMonkeyZero 2006-08-27 09:26:53 PM
That was the one thing that really bothered me about Lollapalooza this year...

Hey kids! It's a counterculture music festival!

Brought to you by AT&T and Budwiser.

Buh.

But it still rocked.

AuralArgument 2006-08-27 11:02:52 PM
GrooveMonkeyZero:

all the counter culture is really "Buy our stuff instead of their stuff."

Best to make informed choices when it comes to your purchases, if it comes from large multi-national alright, although better it comes from a local. Although this all depends on how much stuff you want, rember there is a penelty for paying the lowest price possible (more welfare).

Day on the Green #3...Oakland Coliseum 197?. I think 'Magic Mushroom' was the big sponsor. Or green leaf, or something.

© hell, I can't remember anything except that AC/DC rocked and if anyone found my bell bottoms that day, givemback

Lincoln 2006-08-27 11:12:16 PM
Maybe its cause you have to be drunk to like the music thats playing these days?

I think it's more about the drugs.

/illegal, rather than the sanctioned ones.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't drink much at these events, because the beer is so damn expensive.

I went to Coachella this year and it was surprisingly void of major corporate whoring. Yes there were banners in the beer garden for Bud i think and that was about it. most of the merchandise booths were all little known hipster clothing companies or carnival style food booths. There were no T-Mobil tents and all that crap that there was last time I went to loserpalooza. It was very cool. Not only that but the security presence was obvious but they were VERY cool a lot of the guards were just walking around and asking everybody if they were having fun. I even overheard a couple of them telling people to go get water or whatever when they looked over heated, it was 97 degrees both days. I highly recommend Coachella for anyone that likes music festivals.

\no I don't work for Coachella or any of their affiliates. I just had a good time.

went to Ozzfest in Raliegh, NC. there was the expected corprate stuff, but mostly it was about the fans and the metal. made me t3h happy

Farx 2006-08-27 11:24:35 PM
Just look at all the corporate, 'renamed' sponsored venues.
I wonder how long it will be before they just start hiring bands and changing the names to include their product or corporate logo.

/the revolution WILL be televised, pay per view...

Gosling [TotalFark] 2006-08-27 11:26:19 PM
That's mainly why I don't go to Summerfest anymore.

vegetable raygun 2006-08-27 11:26:26 PM
I was at Ozzfest this year where, ironically, System of a Down was headlining and the farked up venue wouldn't let you leave after you entered the gate. 3 bucks for a cup of water! What a bunch of shiat. It was fun though, smoking dope is free and acceptable at this sort of event.

Rat,

"hell, I can't remember anything except that AC/DC rocked"

The greatest concert of my young life was in 1978, in Jacksonville, FL.

Here was the ticket:

"Molly Hatchet" - The local boys, opening the show...their first concert tour.

"Cheap Trick" - Their first, nationwide tour...which is what brought us to the show in the first place.

"AC/DC" - The mainliners--fark, we had no idea. It was their first US tour. They were the show-stoppers. Roadies blocked the way for Angus as he made his way around the entire floor of the house, courtesy of the wireless transmitter on his guitar.

It moved me. I haven't been the same since.

Farx: I wonder how long it will be before they just start hiring bands and changing the names to include their product or corporate logo.

Well, they pay artist for songs. See, e.g., Busta Rhymes "Pass the Courvoisier", so that's probably the next step.

So you're not really getting a kick out of most of these replies?

I remember when the Black Crowes were touring with ZZTop. They were all fine until they started getting popular on MTV and the radio. Suddenly they didn't want to be part of the 'evil corporate sponsership' (Miller/Lite) that made them famous. Farking bunch of anorexic hypocrites.

ZZ Top and the Crowes were great at UNO. The opening band that replaced the Crowes in the Cajundome was one of the most awful acts I have ever heard. Ball of Flame, Hall of Flame or some crap like that. Ughhh.

Don't like the sponsership, support your local drinking and playing establishments. Music has more soul there typically anyway.

Unless AC/DC headlines one of these things it's not worth the price of admission. Been there done that enough times to know.

I dunno Bon Scott (props to the login), it was, as I recall, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Mahogany Rush, Saint Paradise (July 21, 1979). They all did a fine job. We camped out all night for that one. I was 15. My parents were crazy to let me go. No beer ads.

Yesterday I played the Old Town Summerfest in Mankato, MN and it had the usual share of beer branding, which of course meant I got free water beer. Lite. At 12 in the morning.

egh. When is good beer going to sponsor a show that a Schmoe can play?

Lumber Jack Off 2006-08-28 12:03:21 AM
beer at music festivals getting out of hand?

better file this one under NO farking shiat!

arfuni 2006-08-28 12:15:50 AM
If you can't find a good festival you're not looking hard enough (or you're into crappy music).

We all age. But Angus rocks harder and better then anyone ever did.

Who wants to pay $85 to hear some old washed up rockers on really lousy PA systems while watching them from 200 yards away? Apparently a few million people do.

loozerpalooza was for followers from day 1.

this book said it all 10 years ago and still is amazingly sharp and on topic today....

RidersOfLohan: loozerpalooza was for followers from day 1.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but it's only lollapalooza in name now... it is not the travesty that assailed us all a decade ago.

Seriously. Best three days I've ever had, I think.

bring_it 2006-08-28 01:11:55 AM
It's all because of mp3 trading on the intertubes!

And Bush
And the rich
And the poor
And left-handed people from Turkey with more than three pairs of dark green Docker shorts who drive Chevy Chevettes on even numbered full moon Tuesdays while listening to Sonny and Cher at full blast on crack.

I've wondered that since the early 70's. I can see kids going for the 'new' thrill but otherwise it's a crappy way to hear music.

wingnut396: Don't like the sponsorship, support your local drinking and playing establishments. Music has more soul there typically anyway.

Indeed. And a much greater selection of genres to choose from that way too.

Typical Guardian...

Waaaaahhhh. Someone is making money doing something that was previously a grungy industry. Waaaaaaaahhhh. Something that we were into is now popular. Waaaaaaaahhhh.

Really, there's plenty of room for everyone. I've been to Reading when it had sponsorship and had a great time. Likewise, I've been to small venues and seen bands and had a great time.

just went up to hempstock in maine a few weeks ago, alcohol was not even allowed there, although plenty of people brought it, It was one of the most chill concerts / festivals I had ever been too...

Cant wait for harvest fest.

Saw Ozzfest twice. Once at Sony centetr in Camden in 1997. Then at GSAC in 1998. Fun both times. I love outdoor concerts. Good times.

alexanderplatz 2006-08-28 10:02:10 AM
Live music outdoors in the daytime is the antithesis of rock and roll. It's not so bad once the sun goes down but by then there's a certain lack of enthusiasm.

vanity 2006-08-28 10:14:56 AM
Better than rockfests, outdoor dance music festivals.

WMC, Miami
PureNation, Chicago

I can't stand rock crowds. So many fat, ugly, and trashy people. Completely ruins the vibe.

Uhh, you do realise The G is a major sponsor of Glastonbury every year? The article didn't really come across as a whinge, more just an observation.

/I don't care how many events Carling sponsor, I'll never drink their 'beer'.
