That settles it.

I'm doing my thesis on parallels between the governments in the Firefly and Galactica universes and the Bush administration.

Now I feel like an idiot for spending 5 years researching so I could write a 200 page dissertation in molecular cell biology. I could have instead written it on my hours of World of Warcraft.

They need a new designation for these pseudo-Ph.D.s so people don't get confused.

It bet shortly after the photo was taken, she killed the Star Trek crew member who's wearing the red shirt, well, just because.

You mean like a, "I'm a pompous biologist who thinks I worked harder than everyone else" Ph.D.?

It amazes me that as long as you went to graduate school you didn't realize that people in different departments tend to work about the same on their doctorates (except in Ed. Admin). Whereas a biologist can do a couple of random experiments and a write-up people in other departments often start from scratch.

I'm on the science side of the Ph.D. fence, but I certaintly don't think my doctorate is worth more than somone else's (except people in Ed. Admin.).

She's also cited on the Online International Journal of Buffy Studies. I kid you not. That sound? 10,000 geeks all popping wood at once.

Her's is 90,000 words and took 6 years of watching Star Trek and doing research. You should be ticked off at the people who got PhD's in math in a year back when if you cuold publish a paper there was the PhD. Also happened in the sciences. Einstein's PhD came from one of his papers in 1905.

/if there should be a place without bitterness or jealousy
it's academia

Yawn. I knew it was sarcasm, but there are some people out there who actually would believe that this was her major. Or, like our esteemed biologBoobieser pointed out, that all she did was write a few words on Star Trek. So I used the sarcastic post to clarify that.

You didn't major in context, clearly.

Yes, yes. In my urgency to post something witty I totally forgot to RTFA. I see now we're talking about a she.

This changes things a bit. After seeing her picture, I can only come to this conclusion:

I'm a history grad student, but sometimes I dream of doing an American Culture dissertation on how reality tv shows are the new gladiatorial games. Or how Ken Doll paved the way for the rise of the meterosexual. I'm bitterly convinced that AC students do nothing but watch television and read jargony, self-satisfied modern critical theory and I have no qualms about admitting it.

\going back to reading Latin and middle French now.

"Great Janitor"

/Geek On

Ohh Contraire (SP) The Defiant has a decsent chance against an SD if you take into account the difference in weapons technology. Ex. The biggest energy weapon on the SD are the turbolaser batteries. Now sure they might be "TURBO" Lasers they are still lasers. Riker was quoted in an early episode of TNG as saying (When the ship was targeted by an alien with lesser technology lasers to be specific) "LAsers? They won't even punch through our navigational shields."
That being pointed out I seriously doubt even the thousands of lasers on an SD could totally punch a federation ships shields down. Perhaps the defiants but probably not the enterprise E.

As for torpedos and other weapons that would all depen on how their respective shield technology pans out. Assuming the Defiant is bright enough and quick enough to nuke the shield towers first, it's almost as agile as a fighter, which would mean that ones the shields are out then it would simply be a case of dancing around the target hitting it in Key places (Weapons fighter bays etc) until you wear them down. See the defiants assault on the giant klingon ship. (I believe it happened in the mirror universe.

Of course none of this takes into account suicidal tie pilots or the proton vs photon torpedos. And I have no idea what an Ion cannon would do to the defiant.

However if someone intelligent were manning the defiant after knocking the SD shields down you could simply beam bombs aboard the SD lik Stargate Atlantis.

Christ I'm such a geek. I'm amazed I ever got laid.

\\geek off.

Bigdawg

I think the Ion Cannons of a Star Destroyer would have a similar effect as the Breen Energy Dampening weapon. And yes the match between the SD and the Defiant was off because the SD had tubro phaser cannons and not turbo lasers, the Defiant was missing it's abladive armoring and the option to beam a torpedo into the SD's engineering section was missing (Moddified 'Star Trek: Bridge Commander')
