Haven't thousands of drunken bums slept through longer stints on the NY subway?

Does anyone really even ride MARTA?

yeah, yeah, yeah. I road the 'el' from Lawrence Ave. to 95th street (where our car had overheated and we left it) when I was 17 years old. At night. So what.

/damn that took a long time
//yes the car was still there when we got back to it around midnight

I'd keep the newscaster quiet with a knife while I unbuckled my pants.

MARTA sucks as a mass transit system.

dly 2006-08-23 11:24:53 AM
We got a report from the Bronx. Some small time clique ran into them... The Orphans.

wmoonfox 2006-08-23 11:25:30 AM
We have people who ride the public transit systems all day long here, as well. We call them "homeless"... I guess NYC calls them something else, since they get on the news there.

Sure if you to go to the jail, maybe that is the reason it is kept out of the suburbs.

It doesn't smell on the trains... just in the stations.

I mean, usually.

Wow the record for sittion on your ass while a train moves.

I bet the award will look great in their trailer.... Wait they are in New York, so i guess that instead of trailer its either a box or a slum.

And for the record the urine smell was probably already there.

fredklein 2006-08-23 11:36:10 AM
Riding the subway all day? Sounds like my daily commute.

/Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week.
//Try the veal.

drongozone 2006-08-23 11:37:20 AM
it's not so much the urine smell but the stench of the hobo who gets on your car and starts playing "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the saxophone.

gtothemacp 2006-08-23 11:38:51 AM
there was a rumor going round glasgae 2 years ago that the conncil had found 3 different types of semen on the clockwork orange, 1 was human, i was animal and the third was unkwon which was worrying!

gtothemacp: 3 different types of semen on the clockwork orange, 1 was human, i was animal and the third was unkwon

Ummm... I'm not aware of any non-animal that produces semen, so I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about.

My guess is they were pushing a cart full of stale candy bars and double A batteries, and chanting "one dallah! one dallah! one dallah! one dallah! one dallah! one dallah!" the whole time.
This is news?

No, it's

Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta

according to my parents who lived there. And for the record, they were just as embarrassed about knowing that as I am now.

social lubricant 2006-08-23 12:02:13 PM
i worked in atlanta during the olympics (coca-cola city - what a farking nightmare). anyway, the city told everyone to ride MARTA because they expected the traffic to be insane. well, everyone took their advise, and the roads where EMPTY. but i still took MARTA everyday like a sucker.

/and gas was about $.89 a gallon
//no point to this story

No, sounds to me like you just hate Chicago and all that makes it great.

If you ever take the Red Line in Boston there is a guy, actually known as "Got any change guy" who haunts South Station, Broadway, and Andrew. Fox actually went out and had him be a corrospondent for the day. Any other Boston farkers know the bum I speak of?

P0e 2006-08-23 12:25:09 PM
GimpyNip
The guy who has his arms out and kind of whinces 'Spaaaaaaaare Chaaaaaaaaaaaange'? If that's who you're talking about, he definetely makes ventures over to the green line about once or twice a week too, especially during Sox games.
Its kind of sad that after living here for 5 years, I've started to recognize some of the more memorable bums, as well as give them nicknames.

CheneyTheDick 2006-08-23 12:36:03 PM
Submitter is not kidding. Nothing like the smell of farking piss to wake you up in the morning. and at poe and gimpynip: definitely same thing in Brooklyn, there's a guy I call the "dirt monster" because he's covered in brown dust and has feet (bare) the size of a man's head. then there's the crack whore who plays butchers a harmonium with tunes like "mexican hat dance" and "happy birthday" then shoves her hand in your face demanding money. the tunes are played as a run-on medly, as well. it's probably meth, not crack

MelLuvsDMB [TotalFark] 2006-08-23 12:36:06 PM
The 2 train doesn't smell anymore. Then again, it's not f*cking reliable either...so which would I rather have?

/no point
//bored
///slash whore

MelLuvsDMB [TotalFark] 2006-08-23 12:39:23 PM
Oh wait, for all NYC Farkers who take the train....

Have any of you encountered the spanish couple who shove the picture of their "dead daughter" and ask for help with her burial expenses? They even have "credentials" showing the funeral arrangements, blah, blah, blah. Those two have been burying that same little girl for the past 5 years, kid you not!

I wish I had the balls to shout them out - I've come close, but then I shrug it off and max out the volume on my iPod.

/sigh, I hate this city sometimes

Pinchy129 2006-08-23 12:40:07 PM
Man, the NYC subway barely smells at all anymore. I rode it the other day and the train actually had air conditioning and was clean. The platforms were hot, but not smelly.

Now, back when I lived in NY in '79, that was a different thing. Going on the train was like a descent into hell.

CheneyTheDick 2006-08-23 12:43:07 PM
Pinchy

You obviously didn't go to Brooklyn

saucydwarf 2006-08-23 12:48:27 PM
wow lkam is TOUGH. at night? GET OUT!!!! how are you still alive to tell that story!???????

saucydwarf 2006-08-23 12:51:00 PM
Pinchy - do you remember the A train in the early 80's? you could hardly get a seat that wasn't filled with piss or wet spray paint.

MelLuvs - do they come before or after the asian lady selling 140AA batteries for $2

squishydrew 2006-08-23 12:51:21 PM

Ah yes, thanks for clearing that up.

/not that I really care... ;)

I find it hard to believe NOBODY has posted this yet.... "Charlie on the MTA"....

Let me tell you the story
Of a man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket,
Kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the MTA

Charlie handed in his dime
At the Kendall Square Station
And he changed for Jamaica Plain
When he got there the conductor told him,
"One more nickel."
Charlie could not get off that train.

Did he ever return,
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearn'd
He may ride forever
'neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned.

/Boston, New York... they're all the same

Oh, yeah, those were the days. Though I was mostly a D and 4 train rider. There wasn't a window that you could see through for all the graffiti, except of course the ones that had been broken out. Often half the doors on the trains didn't open and had been sealed shut.

And I still can't believe the idiots got rid of the token.

Yeah, that is the guy. It is great watching people's reactions to him. He must hit up downtown crossing from 5-6. I saw two subway musicians get in to a brawl at Park Street last december over who could play. Never knew those guys were so territorial. It is always kind of sad when a bum you see everyday vanishes. Did he move on to another line? Did he die? Did he get the f beat out of him for pissing in the Charles?

Boston is fairly small so you end up seeing a lot of them same people over and over again. I see the same commuters 3 or 4 times a week on the way two and from work.

szyska 2006-08-23 01:06:02 PM
GimpyNip-

I don't think I've scene him, but there is one guy, trying to make a living selling "Spare Change News" It's was the brain child of this homeless group having the homeless instead of pestering us for change, pester us to buy a news paper that is sub-par at best. He's around Downtown Crossing, yelling at out Spare Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Change News over and over again. Some news group asked him why he did it, and he said, "It sells papers." So I guess you could count him as a success...

P0e

Does this guy have glasses with a cigar/cigarette hanging out of his mouth, sorta sounds like the old Celtics announcer Johnny Most and looks like if he was cleaned up a little he'd be a used car sales man? I've had a run in with this guy. Back a ways, the company I worked for had an off site meeting for the whole company. It was at the Swiss Hotel and we is moving in vast droves from the office to the hotel. He mixes in with the crowd and starts asking for change. Security at the hotel had to throw him out.

Black Zombie Jesus 2006-08-23 01:09:57 PM
NYC trains are well air conditioned and don't smell.

In the summer, the platforms sometimes smell like shiat and are as hot as hell.

oxymephorous 2006-08-23 01:21:08 PM
Thank you,dan86turbo I was about to mention that. And now our Boston train passes are even called "Charlie Cards". Half the city is like: "Who tha F is this Chahlie guy??

Pinchy129 2006-08-23 01:23:38 PM
dan86turbo

I know that song well; it was one of my mother's favorites. But you know the line about how his wife hands him a sandwich through the window as the train comes through the station? As a kid I always wondered why she just didn't give him the damn nickel he needed to get off the train...

oxymephorous 2006-08-23 01:26:20 PM
P0e & Gimpy:

Yes, but have have you encountered King Kenny or The Call Out The Stops Guy (COTSG)? I've seen them on the trolley as well as the bus, the 66 to be specific, and are both pretty fascinating conversationalists. Apparently I'm the Queen of Heath Street, or at least Kenny says I am : )

DMW Devil 2006-08-23 01:28:46 PM
The MARTA trains are actually not so bad - it's the busses that are fairly worthless...
