Not New Orleans. Wrong parish. This is Jefferson Parish, not Orleans Parish.

Maddogjew: LA can kiss my ass, I'll never go back.

Seconded. I was going to school down there and got treated like a second class carpetbagger by my school and the city as soon as it hit. Just finished writing my school a letter telling them they should really stop trying to get me to pay the 11,000 for the non-term because I'm never coming back and they have no leverage.

Too bad for them, I was going to take the civil bar too.

They can take their cancer alley, their inability to have a parade without a stabbing, the farking 'aints and their 'chocolate city' and kiss my white ass. It isn't worth living on a 350k house on cinder blocks just to see cool bands every night.

Eckyhade 2006-08-13 11:07:59 PM
well if you kill the person who can rat on you there would be less crime right???

blah blah blah, why would anyone want to live in a city below sea level that floods constantly, blah blah blah, they should move the city 200 miles inland, blah blah blah

/just getting that out of the way.

Shostie: //rebuild New Orleans!

I say rebuild it. But we should rebuild it realizing what it is: a glorified tourist attraction.

All the fortune 500 companies left town in the 70's (is there even ONE there now?) and no business with half a brain will ever relocate there.

So let the rich, ecentric uptown weirdos do their 'kooky' thing. Let the socialites sit around the Lower Garden District and plan out their Krewe's ball 11 months in advance. But just realize that to the rest of the country NOLA is a place to get drunk, puke in the street, and throw beads at naked boobs, and maybe take in a bit of non-threatening negro culture.

Throw in as many casinos as possible, legalize prostitution, keep the open alcohol regs and let the service industry thrive.

/It really is the city that care forgot.

So, let me get this straight.

You're a little less likely to become the victim of a crime. But, if you become a victim, you're a hell of a lot more likely to be killed?

Sounds normal. The police turned into looters, you know. After they took away the guns, of course.

Solutions to New Orleans I have heard from friends:

Give it to the terrorists as part of a peace deal
Give it to the Israelis to make a new country
Let FEMA control the city (in a week there would be no more crime because there would be no people)

/murder rate's up in NOLA too ;)

mama's_tasty_foods 2006-08-14 01:40:08 AM
as pointed out, this is Jefferson, not Orleans.

here in New Orleans, the police chief is busy dissembling full-time (standard answer to questions about murders is something like: "you should be ashamed of yourself putting out all this negative information") but it appears that we actually have the country's highest murder rate per capita once again-- depending on what you think our population is, we have either 11 or 15 times the national average.

what is really sad is that it's a single, identifiable group that is statistically most likely to get capped-- black males from 15 to 25. they are most of the perpetrators and most of the victims. if you are not in that demographic your chances of becoming a murder victim are quite low, comparable with anywhere else in the US. it is sad to see- these kids have no fathers, sporadic parenting, crap education, a culture of dependency, and the political class has no real drive to change things. the problems affecting this group have only accelerated since the storm.

the DA is an idiot; the criminal judges are notorious for giving out light sentences and granting easy bail to multiple offenders; basically nothing is getting done in the criminal court system, a year after Katrina! the police force is so strapped they've got National Guard patrolling parts of the city, and the cops still can't keep the killing and looting under control. just today I read the city is losing about 3 cops a week- an ominous attrition rate, especially since they can't find enough people to fill existing slots.

nobody is doing anything to stop it; maybe nobody can. this city is doing to itself what Katrina could not have done. after the hurricane we had real opportunities to make things better but with no comprehensive plan, parts of the city are rebuilding themselves and Central City has turned into a shooting gallery. The Quarter, by the way, is now Thug Central. it's only a matter of time before bad stuff starts happening there.

I love New Orleans but I am so sick of this waste- of opportunity, and of humanity- I am considering my options to go elsewhere.

/end rant

Oh, and as if on cue:

http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/news-26/11554967454211 0.xml&storylist=louisiana

new story telling us FIVE people were just shot in a Jefferson Parish nightclub; sheriff's office says it was apparently drug-related and they are unsure if any of the FIVE shot were innocent bystanders.

horrible.

LemSkroob: wouldnt be a Tulane student, would you?

I was a member of one of those 2 schools, which one I'd rather not say because it is greenlit now. Both have the same policy. I transfered elsewhere when they were trying to get us to pay the whole $11,000 bill if we wanted to transfer back credits.

That isn't how you treat your student body and I went bye-bye and transfered to a midwestern state law school. The 4k semester bills are nice.

No media outlet has picked up on the "pay for a semester you didn't attend" story yet. Probably because nobody has had enough balls to sue either University over it.

I thought I was going to have to for a while when they told other AALS schools not to take our transfer apps. Luckily self-interest trumped collusion and most of my transfer apps were accepted.

Good thing because I didn't have $11,000...you can't ask for a retroactive federal loan, so I would have had to drop out.

12inpianist: But, if you become a victim, you're a hell of a lot more likely to be killed?

Before the hurricane, New Orleans was one of the few metro areas in the US where you were more likely to get killed than raped.

Southern Hospitality, I guess.

Tannhauser 2006-08-14 09:59:02 AM
Hey Tuck,

TOP FIVE MUDER CITIES

MURDERS PER 100,000

(1) Washington, DC 45.8 62% Black
(2) Detroit 42.0 81% Black
(3) Baltimore 38.3 64% Black
(4) Memphis 24.7 61% Black
(5) Chicago 22.2 36% Black

ONE of those fine cities are in the south.

fireclown 2006-08-14 10:47:44 AM
Unless I am much mistaken, DC and Baltimore are both below the Mason Dixon line (right about the PA/MD line) and are thus southern. That makes 3 of 5.

Somebody tell me why the fark we didn't just count the act of gawd as one and claim the beach where it now lay. Old Nawlins coulda been a great scuba destination...stupid white man trying to live under the ocean without the technology and expert abilities of the yellow far eastern man. we can't stop from drowning while other countries have airports and cities actually in the ocean.

Pretty much, yeah.

The criminal justice system is so farked up that the gangbangers have their own justice system. You kill someone, go free within 60 days, and one of the victim's peeps "rehabilitates" you.
