There was a documentary made a couple years ago about a West Virginia school--the teachers couldn't figure out how to explain the Holocaust to these kids from a tiny town with no Jewish residents. They happened on the idea of using paper clips to help the kids visualize just how horrifying the murder of 6 million people really is.

Suffice it to say, donations of paper clips started flooding in, the whole town got into it, the kids all learned something, and a number of Holocaust survivors were so touched that they visited the little town. Definitely an interesting (and moving) flick.

Pardon my stupidity, but pennies? Pennies are pretty much worthless, and they don't even look cool. As Holocaust memorials go, that one is pretty pathetic. It just doesn't give you a good image of the scope of the Holocaust.

12-14 million were killed in the Holocaust. 6 million of those were jews.

Jews weren't the only victims, and they weren't even half. Yet tons of people forget about the rest.. gypsies, gays, catholics, jewish sympathizers, Poles, etc etc.

I've seen differing figures to say that there are either 160 or 180 pennies in a pound (453 grams). I don't know whether this is because the coated zinc ones are lighter than the pure copper ones.

A pound of pennies, at face value: $1.60 - $1.80, obviously.

A pound of copper, trading right now: $3.50, or $7840/ton, about double the face value. (This has dropped a tiny bit in the past few weeks. In the second week of May, the copper price topped out at around $3.90, or about $8700/ton.)

The US stopped minting pure-copper pennies in 1982, possibly because, by weight, the price of copper was already close to the face value of the penny. Every US penny minted in the past 24 years has been made of zinc and coated in copper. By weight, modern pennies are 2.5% copper and 97.5% zinc (source: US Mint).

A pound of zinc, trading right now: $1.45, or $3250/ton. (This price has also slid in sympathy with other metals.)

0.975lb of zinc, plus 0.025lb copper: $1.41375 + $0.0875 = $1.50, a bit short of face value.

I did this a week ago when the prices of zinc and copper were a bit higher, and the pennies were worth as much as scrap metal as they were as face-value currency. Of course, you'd have to spend money separating the copper from the zinc, so it's probably not worth it - at least, not yet.
