I'm sure the teachers would love the smell of all the fat kids after having to sweat out a 4 mile walk in 90+ degree weather every morning during the first few weeks back.

they don't turn into tub o' lards

Or tubs o' lard, for that matter. Submitter, drop and give us fifty.

That's not different from the smell most of them acquire during gym class. I walked to school most of my grade school years. Granted, my middle school was only 2 blocks away but it was almost a mile and a half to the elementary school. It didn't start becoming a porky until half way through high school.

Better yet, cook some of the fatties for the others to eat. Just a modest proposal.

They won't have a chance to turn into anything when they're kidnapped by a pervert for being alone on the street.

The pedophiles and crazies are licking their chops over this piece of news.

Critch 2006-08-13 09:14:44 PM
And just like the "Everyone should ride a bike to work!" idea, it doesn't hold up to reality. Most kids don't live near their schools. Because of the need to try and keep all of the races in equal standing, kids are bussed to schools across town when there are perfectly good schools near them. It's stupid, ridiculous, and it happens EVERY DAY.

My neighbor drives her chubby daughter to school and back every day 1.25 miles in their shiny yellow Hummer.

cheap_thoughts 2006-08-13 09:15:22 PM
I walked to school every morning and home every day, and still ended up fat.

Boys used to throw rocks at me, and their arsonal included bottle rockets, and one time they threw eggs at me when I walked home, calling me shamu.

But around middle school time? They started talking to me cause I had boobs and the other biatches were flat.

/thats when it's good to be a fattie

When you live in an area where it's below freezing for almost 7 months out of the year, letting the kids walk to school doesn't always work.

Tentacle 2006-08-13 09:17:01 PM
to everyone who says "it wont work because [blah-the-blah]", I say "well lets just fix the problem then".

stpickrell 2006-08-13 09:17:09 PM
There's what, about 100-125 kidnappings by strangers a year? It's what, 10,000x as many kids are molested by someone they know than by a stranger?

Now, six-lane or more highways, too-busy intersections, etc., they might be real threats. For example, to get out of my neighborhood, there's one way that requires crossing an interstate off-ramp, and another that doesn't even have a crosswalk with signals.

jwrebholz 2006-08-13 09:17:29 PM
Are you CRAZY?! They could be hit by a car! They could be kidnapped! They could be attacked by a wild animal, or a swarm of angry bees, or a rogue clown, or a web administrator, or, or, or SOMETHING.

Won't someone THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?!

SlothB77 2006-08-13 09:17:32 PM
can they walk on the interstate? come on, when you live over ten miles from the school . . .

spiro 2006-08-13 09:18:35 PM
Ive been walking to school, work, stores...etc ever since and Ive never had a weight problem...If its too far to walk to ill ride my bike. Maybe thats cuz im Canadian. I lived in Texas for like 3 months and I swear to God, these people are lazy. They take their big ass pick up trucks just to go down to a store down the street...and when they get out of their car they're BARE FEET!! WTF??! And they're feet are all dirty and shiat...

Peace On Earth 2006-08-13 09:18:48 PM
Yes, let's have our kids get run over as they walk along the side of the road in the dark during heavy traffic for the world's morning commute. Good plan.

Let your kids walk to school. Gives 'em a chance to smoke a fattie while they copy their homework from each other.

/got nothin
//walking to school would have taken me the better part of the day

stpickrell 2006-08-13 09:19:53 PM
To be fair TFA does say, "Assuming it’s safe." It also says, "If you live too far away from the school to let your child walk, I’m sure most school districts provide reliable bus service to take your child to and from school."

gr8fultom 2006-08-13 09:20:42 PM
But TFA says to save gas let your kids walk to school or ride the bus. This is not an attempt to get kids to lose weight. Only to help mom and dad save a few bucks. I think we need another 50 submitter

spiderbarks 2006-08-13 09:21:24 PM
Don't worry about 'stranger danger'. What'll probably kill the kid is Mom talking on the cell phone while driving.

MmmCrime [TotalFark] 2006-08-13 09:21:54 PM
I walked to school for grade school. High school was bout 5 miles away, so we got driven.

/fat kid
//can still walk for miles anyway, and run for one or two as well

Tentacle: to everyone who says "it wont work because [blah-the-blah]", I say "well lets just fix the problem then".

How do you propose we fix the weather, then?

drdipwad 2006-08-13 09:24:55 PM
It's not practical to have kids walk the whole 10 miles to their school. (It's far from uncommon.)

That's setting aside inclement weather, fear of child abductions....

On the other hand, if all your kid has to do to get to school is walk downstairs, then the solution is emminently practical. (And the chances your kid will graduate high-school with the ability to read at his/her grade level probably triple.)

EH, some exercise helps you learn and pay attention. If the school lacks providing it let the little bastards walk..

// father: 1982.
// Me: I was born in 81...
// father: 82.. Sock puppet you remember the same year
// everyone stopped calling you the bastard.

grandmaster - and others being sarcastic

Even a short trip can be deadly.

Remember Miranda Gaddis and Ashley Pond. RIP.

Of course, parents can avoid becoming tub o' lards themselves and walk with them.

Pedophiles? Pffft. That's why I send my kids to school with loaded firearms.

What I hate is having to follow the school bus that has to stop at the end of every freakin' driveway (each one only 40 feet away from the next) on the street and wait for the little porkers to waddle down said driveway.

Someone round up the herd and make them go to one central bus stop.

Pffff, you mean like in Germany? OMGZ, I had to walk a whole mile, uphill, through the snow!

Then the parents can save college tuition money in addition to gas money.

We moved to within 1/2 mile of the school when my kids were little. They walked every day, with a group from the neighborhood.

They are now tall, lean and pretty goddamn fit. My daughter is still a hottie as well.

Ok, so here's the thing - and don't be mad about this - but the thing is, there is no candy. Get the fark out of my van.

nuclear_asshat 2006-08-13 09:34:59 PM
The real reason parents drive their kids to school has nothing to do with safety.

It has to do with parents parading in front of other parents for reasons including, but not limited to:

1. Comparison of lives, cars, and wives
2. Troll for new spouses when they get divorced
3. An automatic excuse to be late for work
4. Check out hot teachers and student teachers

Writer6608 2006-08-13 09:35:03 PM
Hmmm... looking out over my balcony - the drunk bums in the parking lot don't look too dangerous, nor could they run if they were chasing someone. The foulmouthed mentally ill guy screaming at traffic is a little intimidating. There's still beer cans in the alley from the gang fight we called the cops on last night and the drug dealer doesn't show up until after dark. Probably not to many pedophiles around at this hour...

Wait - I send my kid to a school 40 minutes away to get her out of this lovely neighborhood we live in. Maybe if she leaves the apartment at 4:AM...

t3knomanser 2006-08-13 09:36:43 PM
My elementary school: half a mile away, I walked every day. My middle school, six or seven miles or so, the only way to "get there from here" involved highway- I bussed. My high school was a little more than a mile, I walked. And I didn't come from a fancy-pants nice suburban area either- but I wasn't a farking pussy.

If you're worried about your kids walking alone, teach them how to knife fight and make sure they always go heeled.

Alexandra 2006-08-13 09:39:52 PM
I don't think I should be letting my four-year-old walk the nearly two miles to preschool. Besides, he gets enough exercise jumping around the house all day...he loves to jump.

My mother insisted on driving me whenever I didn't take the bus. It was when I was 18 that my parents became a bit more lenient, so sometimes I rode with Mom, sometimes I walked, sometimes I rode my bike.
