Music and passion are still a very important part of music today, just not popular music.

Look just below the surface and you'll find a plethora of great bands making good music still.

But most people don't look past radio or mtv to decide what music is cool, so you end up with shiatty bands like panic! at the disco etc. etc. etc.

One of my dreams has always been to sing lounge tunes at some seedy bar in Vegas. White poly suit, leaning against the piano, brandy snifter for tips (ha ha). Singing the greats only of course, Burt, Barry, Wayne, Sammy and Frank.

/also want to go on Sesame Street as myself

I thought the headine meant he "used to" (as in, once upon a time) repel teenagers, and now he doesn't any more! Glad I can still fire up Barry's Greatest and get the desired effect.

I used to be Barry Manilow, so I'm getting a kick out of some of the replies....

Barry Manilow repels teenagers, most adults (their are a few wierd ones that like him), mosquitoes (dont tell RAID), & most cats.
I invented the internet & global warming.

Stops on the Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave and Pakenham lines have been awash with the strains of the sublime and the ridiculous. Brahms, Bach and Vivaldi share the platform atmosphere with ABBA and the Eurythmics.

so, are they saying that ABBA and the Eurythmics are ridiculous? Damn good groups. Really wish my Eurythmics greatest hits hadn't been stolen.

Given the precedent with "the Mosquito", I imagine teens will now start using Barry Manilow ringtones.

DiVasto also said the FBI at Waco had been holding back its greatest threat.

"If they go to Barry Manilow, it's excessive force."

Ho ho ho. Men, women and children being burnt to death is always worth a laugh......

MoreCowbell!

My daughter just made me listen to a PATD song and I hooted. The hook was something like "haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door?" which I, for one, have to respect as a rare example of lyrical mastery.

/yes, as a matter of fact I AM shiatting you

MoreCowbell!: Music and passion are still a very important part of music today, just not popular music.

Son of God: Personally, I think Panic! at the Disco is one of the few bands actually played on popular radio that actually seems to have passion.

I think some people need to read the lyrics for "Copacabana" in order to get the headline.

Dread Pirate Slasher: C'mon guys, you gotta admit "Mandy" is a good song.

Early Manilow isn't bad...it's not great, and I don't actually own a Barry Manilow CD or anything...but it's not bad. Stuff like "Mandy," "I Write The Songs," "Can't Smile Without You" are all fairly decent if somewhat melodramatic songs. The problem with Barry Manilow is he started off writing stuff that was borderline pop music but fairly quickly transitioned into ultra-cheesy easy listening schlock. If Barry had joined a rock band early on and collaborated more on his stuff...had other people to bring more of an edge to his work and check his excesses...then he might have ended up as a slightly more respectable figure in music history.

In fact, Manilow reminds me a bit of Dennis DeYoung. If DeYoung had started off making solo albums instead of as a member of Styx, I think he might have had a similar career to Manilow.

I'll take your Barry Manilow and give you Paul Anka.

Son of God: I know the lyrics to Copacabana, I don't know if MoreCowbell does, but I was just debating his point.

Very well, then. I will alter my statement to:

I think some people MoreCowbell needs to read the lyrics for "Copacabana" in order to get the headline.

"You know what I want you to do? I want you to go upstairs to that apartment where that guy keeps playing that Barry Manilow record 'Copacabana' over and over and over again. I want you to ring the doorbell, and when he answers the door. I want you to stab him in the neck with a number 2 pencil over and over and over again because he...must...PAY! Chop him up and put him in the freezer and as you leave the apartment...light the place on fire!"

There was a parody song ... partial lyrics:

"We need your help, Barry Manilow ...

/was from Dr. Demento, yes?

There's a recently introduced intarweb technology called a "search engine". You might want to check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Manilow mentions that the song's by Ray Stevens.

Now Barry Manilow with a sniper rifle driving kids away would be a story. And what's wrong with Dean Martin. I'd be hanging there all the time! I do not know what a "hoon" is but apaprently they do not like Dean.

tanager2 2006-08-14 12:00:56 PM
LOL! Back in the 80s when I was in college, I ran the snack shop. Sometimes we couldn't get people to leave at the end of the night, so I'd keep a stash of quarters and play Sinatra singing "New York, New York" about eight times.

Always did the trick.

Peekachicka 2006-08-14 06:36:10 PM
Dude "Copacabana" was my *&^% when I was like 7 years old! I felt so bad for Lola. Even after 30 years she still wore that dress, gosh! it must have smelt horrible!
