Looks like late 40's to me. But, still amazing.

zn0k 2006-08-13 12:24:09 PM
what do you base that on?

zn0k 2006-08-13 12:25:21 PM
shoulda read the article under it. oh well.

Hey, it's Piccadilly. That photo is taken from more or less under the statue of Eros. There's a nice bagel bakery just off to the left of that picture and up a side street. mmm, bagels. Anyway, I usually walk up there of a lunchtime from Whitehall.

Next on fark: a picture of my house.

The article under it specifically says 1948 or 49. Where did the genius submitter extrapolate 1930s-era from that?

OriginalGamer 2006-08-13 06:16:36 PM
Epsilon:

Well London is a pretty backwards place... ;P

Love the 2006 version further down, where Japanese consumerism overtakes the building on the left. That's PROGRESS, folks!

Was the coolest high-resolution, 1930s-era color photograph of London I saw all day when I saw it on Digg earlier today.

Submitter sucks, but I used to go to uni near Piccadilly, so that's a great pic.

Let me get this out of the way:
PHOTOSHOP'D!!!!!
/no, not really, but people that do this in the 'Coolest pic you'll see all day' threads pisses me off

Showed my girlfriend (who has recently moved to London to live with me), She said "It hasn't changed much..." and I laughed ;)

If you're going to rip stuff from the front page of Digg submitter, at least read the comments first, yes?

http://digg.com/design/An_old_hi_resolution_colour_photograph_of_London_circa_ 1930_s

As you'll see some enterprising Digger has managed to accurately date the photo as 1949:

by hiro 14 hours ago
+ 70 diggs
The photo was taken in 1949. Among several things that date it (vehicles already being correctly mentioned) the clincher is the play at the Apollo theatre which only ran for 11 months. Still a great photo, but not 1930s I'm afraid

To be fair, the building on the right has been reclaimed from 'british consumerism'.

Yeah, but if you look at the building in the right of the picture, a lot of the signs blocking the facade of the building have been taken down. So, THAT's progress.

i wish i was in london right now. that would be cool.

TheXerox [TotalFark] 2006-08-13 06:31:04 PM
The modern day photo is depressing compared to what it once was. The stores, the cars, the entire street facade has lost the flair it once had.

Rivethead 2006-08-13 06:31:19 PM
Nice Resin33, thanks!

"i wish i was in london right now. that would be cool. "

If you could get there. There's complete chaos all over the UK and Europe in the airports right now. People sitting outside in plastic bags 'cause there's no space for them inside.

Did I miss something here? What do pubs have to do with anything?

10.0.0.1 - From yours and queenin's pithy comments I could assume that either of you might have been the submitter, but then you each would have to have had at least one approved headline first to have been the submitter.

This reminds me. What games will our children's children play? We're gonna need another war.

There's something about seeing the past in color that makes it seem so much more real.

Thanks for the link. These were posted on Fark a while back, right? Arn't these the ones that are digitially colored?

Makes some of the posts up there look a bit strange.

Yeah, but if you look at the building in the right of the picture, a lot of the signs blocking the facade of the building have been taken down. So, THAT's progress.

It's the 'Cravens' advert, and the visibility of the building in the modern photos, that's the most noticeable difference, to me.
