Doesn't surprise me a bit...I think most of the time they're just looking for an "offical looking" document.

bdesign 2006-06-12 06:20:06 PM
Dude, I didn't even accept those as IDs to get into the bar when I was a doorman. They're WAY too easy to fake. I'd get pissed off people all the time for that, but it's not a recognized form of ID according to the Liquor Board. Driver's License/State ID or Passport, that's it.

evilstein 2006-06-12 06:24:01 PM
The only reason that anything in the US recognizes that fake Mexican "Matricula Consular" card is because they want the money. "The Mexican government has issued millions of Matricula Consular cards in the past few years, mostly to give illegal aliens a form of identification that banks and other institutions will accept. "

Banks love it. They want to act like they're part of the Latino community. Seen Bank of America and the "Send money to Mexico FREE" signs? (in Spanish, of course.)
I think we need to ban anyone from accepting that card. Or, just to make it fair, I should be able to use my CA DL to open a bank account in Canada.

As you can plainly see from a simple look around you, we're not exactly looking for Mexicans.

I've had bars turn me away because all I've had with me was my military ID. They said that the B&W pictures aren't sufficient to make a positive ID.

Thankfully, the new IDs have color pictures.

But, it's a sad state of affairs when bars have better security than DHS.

muninsfire 2006-06-12 07:29:46 PM
This should have the amusing tag, mostly because the headline is completely accurate.

Motor_Head 2006-06-12 07:56:39 PM
Reminds me of the story about the DHS official who took the bet to get on an airplaine without showing his ID.

Bet you didn't know that you do NOT need to show ID when going through airport security.

Anyone have the link to that?

Azu 2006-06-12 08:08:21 PM
It was actually 123 Fake Street.

In the show, at least.

Bruce DeCell, a retired New York City police officer, used his phony card -- which lists his place of birth as "Tijuana, B.C." and his address as "123 Fraud Blvd." on an incorrectly spelled "Staton Island, N.Y." -- to enter the building Wednesday for a meeting with DHS officials.

Yeah, um... see... he was white. And kinda official looking. So it's not our fault.

Dumbasses.

Thats because when a bar farks up and does wrong, it costs them money with the possibility of the entire business.

When government screws up, they get more money and can expand their 'business'.

Its easy when you think like a republicrat.

Once, while waiting for my new WY drivers license to be delivered, I presented both my recently-expired license and my valid UNITED STATES PASSPORT. I got turned down... from entering the "bar" area of a local Mexican restaurant for the four-dollar all-you-can-eat Taco Tuesday special. And I was a frequent customer!

Some bars are stupid with it though. My friend tried to enter a bar with his Puerto Rican drivers license and they said he needed a passport. The funny part is the bartender didn't believe us when we explained that Puerto Rico is a part of the US. Some people are just dumb_sses.

DeCell is guilty of fraud in the federal and state sense...in 2005 the prez signed a law into effect making a federal i.d. card necessary to enter federal buildings... and enhancement of the social security laws in relation to the dhs...

i am sure that n.y., like california or any other state has laws on the books about fake i.d.s and misrepresenting oneself..

Recently the night before a flight I realized that my drivers licence was missing. Fortunately I had the previous one that, thought expired, had the same picture and address of the now missing new one. I was flagged at check-in and had to go through all the heightened security checks. Me in the picture, me on the ticket. Licence expired by 2 mos. What's the point???

Mr. DeCell said he has had the card for four years and has used it again and again to board airliners and enter government buildings, without being turned down once.

It's from Family Guy:

Sir, I have reviewed this contract, and it offers no coverage at all. It just says "volcano insurance" over and over again and down here in small print it says "He's signing it. He's signing it. I can't believe it."

The only federal building in DC with worthwhile security is the White House...or, more accurately, the White House complex.

You can't come in without an appointment. And the USSS guards really do check to make sure your ID matches the name and birthdate on the (pre-screened) appointment list.

NightWulf 2006-06-12 08:31:13 PM
It's a civil service security job in a government building. The person was completly incompetent and let someone in through glaring mistakes. I bet 100 billion dollars that security guard was a fat black woman.

I had to wait at the border for an hour with a permanent-resident friend who had a green card - because if you were gonna sneak back into the States, you'd pick a ID with your entire history on a magnetic strip on the back.

I probably went to Windsor about 20 times with another friend who's only proof of citizenship was a photocopied birth certificate. His drivers license said Michigan, and they never asked for more.

Oh, and then there were the agents who tried going across the border with radioactive material and faked papers. They noticed the radioactive material - so at least the detectors are doing their job, I guess - but they didn't question the fake papers.

Sure. But I'm thinking the guy got the "123 Fraud Blvd" from "123 Fake Street" courtesy of the Simpsons.

Anybody know Mr. DeCell? Ask him if I'm right.

Oh, I forgot my favorite:

When I was waiting an hour to get back into the US, they also searched my minivan up and down.

I had a messenger bag on me. That was never opened. Actually, the three times my car's been serached (always when I had someone with a non-Michigan ID in the car with me), they never looked in my bag.

All the times I could've been sneaking back Canadian absinthe, and the worst I ever had was some really good Chicken Shwarma for lunch the next day.

What a waste.

I mean... ahem.

The federal law, known as the RealID act, doesn't go into effect until May of 2008. And you can get around the RealID requirement by using your passport to get into buildings or planes.

People have no idea what's about to hit them in two years. Increased fees (try 5x in most cases), providing proof of citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization papers or passport), proof of Social Security number and proof of residency (mortgage/lease agreement, utility bill). Then having DMV employees (who usually get paid less then $10/hr) verify those as geniune, have those documents digitally scanned in and kept for 7 years, contact the issuing agency of each of those documents to verify that they did issue them, get fingerprints and retinal scans of every person and then get to wait for your license to arrive in the mail.

And this is a perfect example as to why RealID won't work. You could have the most tamper-proof ID in the world, but if the person checking it is an idiot, all your "security" goes out the window.

Just trust 'em. It's all for our security. The government wouldn't use terrorism as an excuse to violate our personal freedoms while ignoring things like shipping containers at the ports that aren't as visible as giving Alabama anti-terror funding, right?

I went past cycnicism into outrage, and then when the outrage got unbearable, just kinda got all numb. It's sad when this sort of thing doesn't even surprise or shock me anymore.

There are some states that are trying to fight it, since on top of Real ID being a f-cking stupid, stupid, stupid idea on many, many grounds, the government didn't give the states any money or direction on how to go about putting the damn thing into place.

Personally, I like having my identity stolen, privacy invaded, and state funding diverted to do so, so I'm OK with it.

Least I can do to keep the terrorists away, eh?
