All these photos were developed by my grandfather, a seabee stationed on Tinian during WWII. I scanned them and restored them as best I could so he could see them before he died in 2001 at the age of 89. This is the first time anyone else other than those in my family have seen them. He ran an underground photo lab in his tent and was basically the guy you went to when you needed anything. His irish temper was notorious and he spent a lot of time in the brig for punching out officers.

the mushroom cloud picture was the bomb that destroyed Nagasaki. All these photos are originals and I have them in my possession. Please don't hotlink them without permission and/or credit.

I don't have a lot of details on the photos but they're classified based on subject:

J: Photos and film taken off dead japanese soldiers
tinian: photos taken on Tinian Island
b29: photos of the nose art on the planes
k: photos taken inside a korean concentration camp
ships: photos taken onboard the ships

Some of the photos are NSFW.

I'd like to thank my grandfather and all who served with him, before him, and since then for defending our country and sacrificing everything to do what they thought was right.

Wow, thanks for the treasure trove of awesome images, Deveyn!

RoguePixie [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:32:24 AM
That nose art is amazing! Thanks for sharing such an amazing collection with us!

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:35:30 AM
I have higher res versions of everything, as well as eps format. It took a few days work to restore everything but I was able to bring out detail you couldn't even see in the photos with the naked eye.

Sidi 2006-05-29 02:37:04 AM
Deveyn the one named "tinian15" is an incredible composition. Absolutely perfect, that looks like something that would be hanging in a gallery. I know that plane, but I can't remember the model right now...do you happen to know?

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:40:43 AM
Sidi: do you happen to know?

It looks like a P51 Mustang.

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:42:14 AM
BTW, the photos of the korean concentration camps were declassified a few years ago. My grandfather pulled out a shoebox and handed it to me and said, "well I guess the bastards can't do much to me for showing you this."

Sidi 2006-05-29 02:42:22 AM
Deveyn that was my first guess, but the cockpit looks wrong to me.

ecmoRandomNumbers [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:43:42 AM

You Rock!

I'm still working on my dad's pics from Korea. I've restored several pics and given them as gifts.

You've done a great job!

P.S. Animated titties are NOT NSFW.

Kids should be allowed to see boobies. They suck on them, for the sake of Pete!

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:44:11 AM
Fnord: afford a better digital camera?

He was already courting disaster with his activities on the island. He'd develop film for his friends as well as trade japanese artifacts for booze. He had quite an operation. After the war he was a postman and bookie in Chicago and quite the pool hustler.

bakarocket 2006-05-29 02:45:36 AM
Sidi: It's not a Mustang, it's a Japanese plane. Look at the wing. And also it's a two seater.

It looks like a busted up Kate. Nakajima B5N.

sal-paradise 2006-05-29 02:46:04 AM
That was a hell of a choice truman made. I personally think he was right. When you see the mainland training regime. Lotta people second guess it though.

SingletonFactory [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:50:13 AM
Very cool pics, thanks for sharing those.

bakarocket 2006-05-29 02:50:46 AM
Holy crap, Deveyn, I hope your server can handle the greenlight load.

sal-paradise 2006-05-29 02:50:47 AM
I thought 15 looked like a val till I looked at the gear. I would say kate.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:51:39 AM
I gotta say, this is probably one of my favorite Fark links ever. And what a great day to have it there.

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:51:45 AM
Fnord: K2 with the enormous wang?

Hah.

that's part of a rocking chair.

Actually that photo hit me the hardest of all of them. The japanese were just as horrible as the Nazis with what they did to the korean prisoners and I think that picture perfectly captures it.

Of course the one of the baby in the pot is cute as hell.

jonasborg [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:51:56 AM
If I were at home I would say that I could re-host, if needed. I just hope I can still view them in 5 hours when I get home.

Sidi 2006-05-29 02:52:44 AM
Ahh, good, greenlit. It certainly deserves it.

I think you should see about publishing his photos. Some of them are worth it. I know doing it for profit may seem gruesome, but many people would love to see these.

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:53:07 AM
bakarocket: I hope your server can handle the greenlight load.

Let's hope. I have 1.2TB of available bandwidth. If it gets farked I'll move it somewhere else.

Porker 2006-05-29 02:53:50 AM
Fnord: Like the kid in K2 with the enormous wang? ;-)

What the heck is that?

log_jammin [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:54:27 AM
hmmm...my dad has all of my grandpa's pics from WWII when he was in Okinawa.

Maybe I should get those scanned as well.

Great submission Deveyn!

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:54:36 AM
Sidi: Some of them are worth it

I don't have the negs but I still have the original prints. The rest of the stuff (swords, guns, uniforms) were thrown away by my grandfather because my grandmother didn't want to have anything around to remind her of the war. It's a shame. He came back with a lot of stuff.

WebSkipper 2006-05-29 02:55:36 AM
Bravo Zulu, Deveyn. Class act there.

/WWII era: George Whiskey Tango.

MorteDiem [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 02:57:45 AM
Saw this coming a mile away...

tx_timr 2006-05-29 02:59:00 AM
Can't wait to view this site when I get home. Happy Memorial Day everybody and THANK YOU to ALL who served and sacrificed for us.

Wraithbane 2006-05-29 03:01:59 AM
Amazing collection, thank you for sharing it.

bakarocket 2006-05-29 03:02:14 AM
Thanks mods, I felt guilty.

sal-paradise: As I was saying, I'm almost certain that was a Kate. The Val's have the extended tail the runs forward along the fuselage.

Here's the Kate.

And the Val.

Anyway, I haven't said this yet, Deveyn, but nice work.

abdul 2006-05-29 03:02:23 AM
Hrm... Guanoloco.com. Does that mean Crazy Batshiat?

/Nice gallery though, smubzittlebitbangbang.

Paul! [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 03:08:18 AM
Deveyn, you are absi-farkin'-lutely awesome for sharing these! I'm in the Navy currently for the past 10 years, and it's just blows my mind looking at these pics from years gone by. If I was actually sober right now, I would be able to alliterate further, but all I can get out of this keyboard right now is thanks to your grandfather and you for the pics. It means a lot!

sal-paradise 2006-05-29 03:10:18 AM
bakarocket

You got her! I'm going back to my silhouette playing cards ;) They all look the same after getting bounced by a 2 ship of corsairs.

Thanks for the pics dev.

WebSkipper 2006-05-29 03:12:00 AM
WebSkipper: /WWII era: George Whiskey Tango.

Correction. Make that Tare Victor George.

/Sorry.

bakarocket 2006-05-29 03:16:12 AM
sal-paradise: I had to check it as well, I was going to say it was a Mabel at first.

/I wish I had silhouette playing cards. The only problem is that I'd always end up playing solitaire. I'm the only aviation geek I know.

maudibjr 2006-05-29 03:37:27 AM
Nice photo's, pic you don't normally see.

Wince_Meet [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 03:48:56 AM
Great submission. Thanks a lot for posting this.

Baggins [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 04:24:01 AM
Thanks Deveyn!
And thanks to your Grandfather!!

Sweater Girl [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 04:49:58 AM
Wow Deveyn
Thank you for sharing priceless memories like that.

Thank you farker (farkette) vets. Thank you very much.

IsayIsay 2006-05-29 04:58:04 AM
Great pics Deveyn's Grandfather! Some of them are absolutely beautiful. And some horrific. I normally hate 'the coolest pictures you will see all day' headlines, but this one would have lived up to that title.

omigodiAMjesus 2006-05-29 04:59:41 AM
I'll drink to that! Many mahalos, all of you.

sal-paradise 2006-05-29 05:02:43 AM
Is that 'Mo picture in wide circulation? If not it'd be worth something to your family I think.

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 05:51:58 AM
sal-paradise: Is that 'Mo picture in wide circulation?

which picture specifically?

None of these have been seen to the best of my knowledge. All the photos were in a shoebox he kept in the garage. I scanned and restored them because the paper was decomposing.

No Catchy Nickname 2006-05-29 06:17:21 AM
Amazing, Deveyn, and thanks for sharing. Some very, very interesting shots there. I was wondering how he got pictures of Japanese pilots and stuff, but your commment at the top explained it.
Was he actually in the plane that took the pic of the mushroom cloud?
I noticed a pic of Okayama that said "before". You don't have the "After" as well do you?
By the way, the pic of the Missouri must be a fake because there's no Steven Seagal or Tommy Lee Jones in it;)

Thanks once again for sharing.

JoeCamelToe 2006-05-29 06:17:36 AM
Nice, Deveyn!

Happy Memorial Day!

Deveyn [TotalFark] 2006-05-29 06:43:10 AM
No Catchy Nickname: Was he actually in the plane that took the pic of the mushroom cloud?

No, but a buddy of his was in the plane. I've compared it to other archival photos and it's from a slightly different angle so it must have been clandestine.

He ran a photo lab in his tent and developed film for other navy guys since there wasn't a 1 hour photo anywhere nearby. he'd trade favors for booze and then trade the booze for other sundries. He survived a lot... dengue fever, gangrene, injuries from coral, etc.

I don't have the "after" photo of Okayama.

Half Man Half Biscuit 2006-05-29 06:51:49 AM
Great pictures, thanks for sharing Deveyn.

okitasan 2006-05-29 06:55:40 AM

Awesome and thanks Deveyn!
