Arg. In my haste to submit I completely butchered the headline. That should read: "Iran takes delivery of nuclear-capable missles from North Korea. Has sufficient range to hit Europe. But don't worry, they're only for peaceful civilian purposes."

Hey, Axis of Evil and all.

Occams_Electric_Razor 2006-04-27 09:31:35 AM
In all honesty, by ignoring Pakistan's conventional and nuclear black markets we've allowed this mess to not only continue but to also grow worse.

You don't like a nuclear Iran? Your problem is with Pakistan.

You don't like a nuclear North Korean? Your problem is with Pakistan.

You don't like North Korea having such great missle technology? Who do you think they got it from? I'll give you one guess.

Until someone decides to shut Pakistan's conventional and nuclear proliferation down, we'll only ever be going after the symptoms and never treating the disease.

OK, line up to call me anti-american.

Iran has a right to defend itself. Pakistan has nukes and for some reason we're OK with that, even though we sometimes accuse them of harboring terrorists.

Culturally, middle-eastern people have a tendency to overstate things, and to phrase things in the most agressive way possible. Sabre rattling is a required function of any government that wants to stay in power over there, and has been for thousands of years.

How arrogant are we that everything iran does now has to be about us?

Occams_Electric_Razor 2006-04-27 09:41:28 AM
Dancin_In_Anson: You sure about that? Seems to be the other way around.

Your second link is broken, but I do seem to recall a number of years ago that we were tracking a shipment of missles from Pakistan to North Korean by way of the UAE.

Their nuclear program definitely has a Made in Pakistan label on the side, however.

Either way, though, my wider point is that we've allowed these larger messes to compound while we've been distracted by lesser issues.

jpbreon 2006-04-27 09:46:11 AM
Europe? Who cares. They always fuss about the US being up in their business, so we chould butt out and let them deal with the mess.

I agree with you. Iran is going to do what Iran is going to do. Antagonizing them only makes it worse.

Let Iran become a nuclear power as Pakistan, India, China, Russia, and Israel (all Iran's neighbors) already are.

Next, the Saudis will want the bomb, then of course the Egyptians, etc...

I think that if Al-Queda or other terrorists could have or wanted to nuke us, they would have done so already.

Marcus Aurelius [TotalFark] 2006-04-27 09:51:57 AM
So when do I get MY nukes? I have a Second Amendment right to nuclear weapons, damnit, and this government is denying me my constitutional perrogative.

Iran WILL get the bomb, and the Mullahs would LOVE to get hit by US and/or Israeli forces - then they'd have the whole country behind them, screaming for revenge. They'd be as popular as Bush was on 9/12. Try invading THAT.

albo [TotalFark] 2006-04-27 09:52:35 AM
Iran has a right to defend itself.

who is threatening Iran? they are the ones that threaten others. they warred with iraq. they took over our embassey. they harbored terrorists. they fund terrorists in iraq. they threaten israel with annihilation. they shouldn't have nukes

Pakistan has nukes and for some reason we're OK with that

because you can't make a blanket statement. some countries having nukes is worse than other countries having nukes.

North Korea may have gotten nuc technology from Pakistan, (as well as USSR and China) but they have done their own homework in the delivery systems. Which they are selling around the world.

Actually issles are the new radar evading weapon they were talking about. It's the 'm' that caused most of the radar return, without it the energy waves just slide over the issle and you don't get a return.

Maybe. Butnot with nuclear weapons. Iran is a signatory to the NPT. There are formal procedures for a country to back out. If they really feel they need nukes, let them do so publically. No more of this "yes we are, no we're not" BS. Declare to the world your intentions.

Pakistan has nukes and for some reason we're OK with that, even though we sometimes accuse them of harboring terrorists.

No, we're not really OK with that. It is, however, a different situation, calling for a different solution.

one is selling delivery, the other sold nukes.

kinda hard to make any sense of our current foriegn policy, especially in relation to pakistan. 'enemy of our enemy is our friend' was shiatty policy....'the friends of our enemies is our friend' takes it to a whole new level.

First scares over Iran's not-so-super "super torpedoes". Then intelligence from a nuclear-armed state that still prefers us to do their dirty work.

This smells awfully familiar.

No, it isn't. You are using what is called "The Nuclear Strawman".

Iran WILL get the bomb, and the Mullahs would LOVE to get hit by US and/or Israeli forces - then they'd have the whole country behind them, screaming for revenge. They'd be as popular as Bush was on 9/12. Try invading THAT.

Why would invasion be necessary? All you really have to do is stop the program. Bomb the facilities, destroy the material, and fly home. The Isrealis did that to Iraq, and set their program back quite a number of years. They didn't need to invade.

As for worrying about what Iran will do, well Iran can't project power. We can. All we have to do is prevent oil shipments from Iran from reaching other countries, and we can shut down their economy. That would cause unrest in Iran eventually.

By the way, from all indications I have heard the younger generation of Iranians don't have the vitriolic hatred of the US that their fathers have, and in fact don't particularly care for their own government, either.

otakucode 2006-04-27 10:13:07 AM
Can't reach America?

Let the Europeans deal with it. They've been armchair quarterbacking for long enough, let them out on the front lines. Maybe they'll all fold as easily as the Spanish did, electing the subway bombers out of fear of more attacks.

FarginIceHole 2006-04-27 10:13:12 AM
Marcus,

If Iran sends a nuclear warhead to Israel or anywhere else, we won't have to worry about invading--just moving our troops in Afghanistan out of prevailing wind patterns.

Robobagpiper [TotalFark] 2006-04-27 10:13:24 AM
the other an ally.

Correction. Musharraf is an ally.

Pakistan's intelligence services are thick with not only Al-Quaida sympathizers, but the people who organized Al-Quaida and the Taliban in the first place.

And all it takes is one bullet and they're in power.

Occams_Electric_Razor is right. Pakistan is the real threat. All Iran does is make a lot of noise (and albo, they were invaded by Iraq, not the other way around).

Don't worry about the dog that always barks. Worry about the one that never barks.
