When does Submitter plan to recognize the correct spelling of "letter"?

Well, *finally*...

We're all staring at you, Albania.

Swedish linguists have always viewed it as a lesser sibling of the letter 'V,' as the two letters are pronounced identically in Swedish.

Are they pronounced identically like a 'V' in English, a 'W', or one of those funny foreign sounds that doesn't transliterate well?

TwistedTenacity [TotalFark] 2006-04-23 01:28:18 PM
Let me hear you say "VHAT!"

When???

I've got a buddy who recently came over from India, and he pronounces all his W's as V's. I don't want to sound like some sort of redneck... but it's pretty funny at times.

It's the same in norweigian - V and W are pronounced identically when used in words, [v-eh], but differently when reading only the letter: [v-eh] for V and [dobbel-v-eh] for W. In other words: Dubya doesnt have its own unique phonetic sound.

Stil refuses to recognize all double leters, though.

Funy Swedes.

I work with an Indian who sometimes blurs the two sounds.

ZAZ and hitchking

My boss is an Indian who pronounces his all his V's as W's.

I guess they make Indians in all three varieties.

It's time we put an end to these sick subhuman filth that don't recognise the letter 'W'.

russkaya-arabskaya amerikanka 2006-04-23 02:20:59 PM
Russians, oddly enough, rarely have problems with W's, which they don't have (although they have the sound) but sometimes pronounce V's as W's in English (think wodka), even though V is a common letter in Russian.

Haven't done French in a long time, but doesn't their 'W' gets pronounced as 'Double V' as well.

And I believe George W. Bush's double V is pronounced "Wanker".

So anyone want to explain why the fark we call it a "double-u" when it's clearly a "double-v" ??

Dumle 2006-04-23 02:27:12 PM
MorningBreath

Sweden?

its only in the country name.

Only in the English version of it. :P

But I'm happy, this has bugged me since I was in first grade. Way back in the day, there were no distinction between 'v' and 'w', i.e. you could spell words with either and they'd have the same meaning. That's not the case anymore (due mostly to a heavy borrowing of English words).

Actually, the Romans didn't know their arses from their elbows, hence a Roman V means 5.

Extra letter? All letters are from the latin alphabet, but Swedish also has three extra letters which I can't write here since Fark filters them out. Umlauts.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2006-04-23 02:37:53 PM
According to Wikipedia, A-with-a-circle, A-with-two-dots, and O-with-two-dots are considered separate letters rather than accented letters.

And wessels. Don't forget about nuclear wessels.

Extra letters:

hem.mac.se

sort of like pronounced like the vowel sounds in 'ball', 'bear' and 'burn'.
