You see, if France had treated Senegal like they did some of their other former colonies, like Vietnam or Algeria, this might've never had happened.

Drew [TotalFark] 2002-05-31 09:34:15 AM

I have no idea where Senegal is. In fact, I don't believe I have ever heard of such a country before. Yet I got an A in World Geography class back in school. I'm a walking billboard for public schooling.

GALATASARAY 2002-05-31 09:37:32 AM
Senegal played really well, they definitely deserved the win... And the Senegalese guy that scored, I love his name: Bouba Diop !

dogbone 2002-05-31 09:37:36 AM
Papa Bouba Diop

Klaatu Barada Nikto

pretnar 2002-05-31 09:39:39 AM
"Only in the USA is it called soccer"

Just so happens that the USA is the only country that matters, so it's "soccer."

Hanky [TotalFark] 2002-05-31 09:40:08 AM

baconFarker 2002-05-31 09:40:58 AM
SLAYERSWINE

they dont really 'seed' the groups but france was ranked #1 by fifa.

GooberMcFly [TotalFark] 2002-05-31 09:41:31 AM
What's the "World Cup"?

kreskin 2002-05-31 09:41:46 AM
There goes my pool.

Viva la Senegal.

sierra4 2002-05-31 09:42:02 AM
I got my money on Italy or Argentina (if they can make it our of the Death Group alive)

AJace 2002-05-31 09:42:10 AM
And in other news - Americans could give a rats ass about soccer.
God I wish the NFL season were longer.

Wolfy 2002-05-31 09:42:30 AM
Good for Sengal...

Luxian 2002-05-31 09:43:19 AM
americans do, citizens of the usa don't :)

ha-Haa! By Senegal. For shame...

baconFarker 2002-05-31 09:43:50 AM
GooberMcFly

its the cup that the stanley cup losers get. its smaller, gold, and has a soccerball on it for some reason.

bigpeeler [TotalFark] 2002-05-31 09:44:10 AM
Ahem.....to any chair-throwing, rubber-bullet-dodging futbol fans out there, I have a question. What's up with the stripping off of the shirt after someone scores a (yawn) goal? Esplain pleeze Lucy.

wanbo37 2002-05-31 09:44:45 AM
Merde!

Being the most popular sport in the world I think it deserves to be called football. Maybe in the US and Oz (where I'm from) it can be called Soccer. But it definately the worlds game.

TheOsiris 2002-05-31 09:45:13 AM
Most obvious headline ever!

Claude Damage 2002-05-31 09:45:45 AM
To reiterate: Yay for Senegal! Yay!

Wolfy 2002-05-31 09:45:59 AM
Bigpeeler: Not everyone does it, only people who aren't acrobatic and cannot dance... those strip...

hlx 2002-05-31 09:46:36 AM
So, who's going to the pub at 7:30am tomorrow to watch Ireland???

Mex 2002-05-31 09:47:23 AM
It's ALWAYS been called football in most countries, except for a little while in England(where it was supposedly invented).

Honestly, it makes more sense to call it Football instead of Soccer. What the fark does Soccer mean?

And it deserves more the name, since your American Football barely involves connecting the foot with a ball. They should call your sport "Gridiron" or "Smash" or something.

But don't worry, if you don't want to change right now, it's ok. In a few generations, when the US is full of mexican immigrants, that will change. :D

goatzilla 2002-05-31 09:47:34 AM

Regarding soccer fans, one word: Hillsborough.

SkiNut 2002-05-31 09:48:55 AM
TheOsiris:

I submitted the same link, albeit too late, but my headline said that France can't surrender yet. Not as obvious.

chanle51 2002-05-31 09:49:51 AM
This is a Senegal. Also known as the 'Nipple of Africa'

cobol 2002-05-31 09:50:04 AM
Ireland and Cameroon tomorrow. Go Cameroon.

RobW 2002-05-31 09:50:27 AM
They should call your sport "Gridiron" or "Smash" or something

Or "Commercial Break".

Wolfy 2002-05-31 09:51:09 AM
I demend Fark uses Mondial instead of "World Cup"!

Kakrafoon 2002-05-31 09:51:17 AM
It's a damned shame that Greenpeace has no team in the World Cup. They'd easily win against France (as always).

2BRalphWiggum 2002-05-31 09:51:28 AM
And there was much rejoicing...

AJace 2002-05-31 09:51:48 AM
1-0...and this is supposedly a riveting, entertaining game to watch? I actually watched this game (at 0700 my time) just because I do realize everyone else in the world is nuts about it, but I can't figure out why. Maybe they have strippers and free beer at the games or something.

And someone tell me WTF that "magic spray" crap is! You know, it's the stuff they spray on people who take dives in the game, supposedly fixes any injury in soccer! And what's up with hauling people off on stretchers, only to have them come back into the game 10 minutes later? That's real manly, man!
