The good professor has clearly never held a real job. Must be a sociologist?

One of the stupidest articles I have ever read on Fark.

A tax incentive for laziness... I'm sure that will work out well.

They already do: The harder I work, the more money I earn. The more money I earn, the more they take for themselves.

How bout we tax the fatasses instead? At least workaholics dont take up two seats on the subway.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2006-03-11 09:27:14 PM
Well, not everyone can hide out in academia their whole lives and do bullshiat research while your grad students teach your classes. I'd rather take advice on how to work in the real world from Dubya than a professor.

/maybe not

Scandalous

Us professor types work on average over 50 hours a week. Granted, it's not manual labor, but given the publish or perish mentality of our universities, I think we're more likely to be workaholics than most people. I'm at work right now (on a Saturday night). Granted, I'm not actually doing anything productive, but still...

skinink 2006-03-11 09:33:17 PM

By the looks of the article, I did not realize that today was April 1st.

Unfortunately, he originally tried this policy in Mexico, where it failed miserably. Siesta time ? Okay, Senor !

actually i think he's trying to make a point. He's pointing how ridiculous it is that we tax smokers with the justification of "well, its bad for them, this is incentive to stop".

Some Farkers are working hard on their ulcers. Everybody knows is that too much stress and too much rest are bad for you. A tax on overworking would be stupid though, this isn't France, for God's sake. Maybe people should have more vacation days.

Did I read somewhere that US workers have less vacation days on average than other, similar countries?

I suggest we make the good professor work 3 minimum wage jobs to support his kids before we go an define what a workaholic is. This guy is an assmunch and deserves to work
the worst jobs customer service has to offer.

MrGumboPants 2006-03-11 09:38:11 PM
Doesn't this just sound like a good way to poke holes in the idea of sin taxes?

I'm tired of shiat being taxed because it's 'unhealthy'.

Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities, we didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've *worked* in the private sector. They expect *results*.

/ obscure?

cybrwzrd 2006-03-11 09:40:38 PM
He just wants to punish people for working hard and being successful. The fact that someone thinks like that scares me.

Another gem from Anarchist (AntiChrist) Arbor. Professor Nimrod has likely not worked a day in his life without the comfort of University of Michigan retirement benefits, the lure of tenure, etc. etc. etc. I'd like to kick his ass.

Oh really? So why is that doctors often put in 18 hour days, in the ER I usually work 12 hour shifts. I usually don't get a lunch break.

Can you show me who (or what agency) has proven this? I sure would love a four hour day :-)

I'm curious what can be done with a sociology degree. All my friends that majored in it, either had to teach (most couldn't find jobs teaching, though) or are working in a totally unrelated field.

Is that typical of the market? Or are my friends just unlucky?

Typical. Unfortunately.

Just for fun, parse this sentence from TFA:

In fact, each additional year of schooling reduces the likelihood of being fully or partly retired by about as much as one-third of a year's increase in the planned age of retirement.

It does actually say something meaningful, but the author did their best to hide that meaning from us.

rogersnowden 2006-03-11 10:14:49 PM
Astounding, how some guys can get a PhD in economics, and not have the faintest notion of the subject. It never dawns on these "academics" that we ought to be free.

Making money, by individuals, is decidedly good for the rest of society. Whether you spend your income, save or invest it, the economic activity benefits others. So, why do we tax desirable behaviour?

Tax consumption, but do not tax income, whether "earned" or derived from investments.

Kyinal 2006-03-11 10:18:20 PM
I gotta agree with the French on this. Work smarter, not harder.

They are more productive per hour than us....americans work alot, but alot of it is...well...going on FARK.COM.

You can work hard for your entire life and get nowhere, or you can make one smart move, and make millions....hard work is overated.

Greenbeans and physics:

We had a doctor here died of exhaustion - had been running of adrenaline for weeks - finally got to sleep and his heart stopped.

Point is, it's better to be well organised and do four hours good intense work a day than sit around for 10 hours and still do only 4 hours work. The 'jacket on the seat' mentality is garbage.

4 hours hard work, and 7 hours total, with an hour for lunch is the best arrangement, and keeps the family and social life sane as well.

I used to work 70+ hours a week, so go swivel.

Dave L

This is quite smart. A means to discourage ambition and hard work by forcing higher taxes taxes upon those who are so unfortunate as to have these defects. There is a two fold benefit here as well. By discouraging hard work, then those that are blessed with less ambition will not have their feelings hurt by those that earn more and work harder. This will eventually have the same success as curving grades and making tests less difficult so that the feelings of the less ambitious won't be hurt. This a very, very progessive and worthwhile policy because as ambition is discouraged with higher taxes, then less taxes will eventually be collected as well, to the benefit of all.
