I've only met a couple... but MIT students really have a large chunk of the -'did you see that amazing thing online?' -pie

they just rock.

Mitch119 2006-03-04 06:47:30 AM
Hmmmm. I was thinking they had managed to fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times or something.

Honest Bender 2006-03-04 08:54:31 AM
those are all pretty cool. I especially like the lord of the rings one.

SunriseOverSea 2006-03-04 08:56:46 AM
Those kids are fast as lightning.

\Bet they can't fold their shirts though. heh.
\\Spent 2 years on an AI degree drooling over MIT

Five out of six deserve top marks.

The alien pretty much sucks, though.

default_user01 2006-03-04 08:59:54 AM

*cough* dorks *cough*

Seriously though, I think the Katydid is pretty rad. A lot of them sorta look more like paper mach rather than actual folding. But that's just me.

Chokaro 2006-03-04 08:59:59 AM
and 4 out of those 5 with top marks are from one guy :/

Meauran 2006-03-04 09:03:52 AM
Screw you India... our best and brightest can fold paper! HA!!

Larjmarj 2006-03-04 09:05:40 AM
Very cool especially the LOTR ring wraith.
I appreciate the fact that they can take it from concept to actual execution. Using brains + hands.

rtadoyle 2006-03-04 09:08:22 AM
Did you check the last name?

i don't think they're exactly *OUR* best and brightest.

Anyway, I think the origami were folded so well, cause they've actually seen the subject material... LotR, beetles, etc.

Which makes you realize why nobody made a woman's breast.

FarkIsSlashdotForDummies 2006-03-04 09:08:39 AM
i take it the person who took the photos aint a winner of the mit photoography championships....

In addition to his beaver, Brian Chan submitted this katydid.

Uh...

My scale model of asteroid B-1762 didn't even place.

default_user01: A lot of them sorta look more like paper mach rather than actual folding.

From the look of them, the technique used was "wet folding", or folding slightly damp paper. The model can be molded into 3D shapes while still damp, and those shapes will remain when the model dries. So, similar to papier mache, but different in that it isn't just glomped together over a wire frame, but rather is an origami model that is shaped at the end.

ScreamingInDigital 2006-03-04 09:19:02 AM
Nice beaver.

for someone who just said "rad", calling someone else a dork seems a bit out of place ...

Brian Chans MIT Origami page:

http://chosetec.darkclan.net/origami/

default_user01 2006-03-04 09:23:11 AM

But... is "Wet folding" really Origami in the normal sense? I mean, I can dampen a piece of paper, and sqush it together to form something/. It isn't really making the damn oragami swan now, is it?

Just feels like cheating.

itdood 2006-03-04 09:29:55 AM
Is it origami or more like paper mache?

iknowyou [recently expired TotalFark] 2006-03-04 09:31:12 AM
I have so many friends at MIT, it's rediculous. They come up with the craziest ideas, and I love them all to peices for it. Some good times hacking... some good times... hehe.

I suppose if you take "Origami in the normal sense" to mean folding dry paper, it really wouldn't be.

The question(s) then becomes what is, and who gets to decide what is, Origami in the normal sense.

Looks more like paper mushing and mashing than paper folding.

Got racism?

/yes, you are a jackarse.

whammer 2006-03-04 09:44:42 AM
Do they have a prize for best multiple origami?

Beppo 2006-03-04 09:46:34 AM
It's freaking absolutely mind-boggling that this shiat is actually made from a single square of paper; I thought for sure these things were multiple sheets put together, but checking on the winner's homepage (posted earlier) which features the crease pattern of each design on squares of uncut paper, I'd have to say that crap is absolutely amazing.

/then again he used a computer

laurascudder 2006-03-04 09:50:49 AM
Did you see how some of the ones on Chan's page have crease diagrams? So for this scorpion

chosetec.darkclan.net

you just need to fold this pattern

Did someone change the definition of "cool" while I wasn't paying attention?

montroll 2006-03-04 09:54:52 AM
In my opinion, it is origami in the normal sense. To do wet folding, you don't mush -- the shaping is just at the end. You still have to fold to get the limbs, torso, tail, face, etc. You can curl a dry piece of paper too -- be it kami, copy paper, or foil -- but over time, that curl or shaping will disappear. Wet folding just hinders the paper's fibers from springing back. You can rewet and unfold or reshape, if you like, so there is no permanent damage, as would result from tearing, cutting, or gluing.

Check out Robert Lang's web site and Takashi Hojyo's site and Joseph Wu's site (click on galleries) for some great images of models, some wetfolded, some not.

the_epic_problem 2006-03-04 09:59:13 AM
neato. you really can see the scorpion in the folding pattern, there. i think i'll try the hermit crab today.

Whenever i hear about oragami I think of that Little Caesars commercial from back in the day:

So I get two pizzas for the price of one?

No, you get two boxes.

What do I do with the extra box?

Ever hear of oragami?

What's that?

A pterodactyl! Rar! Rar!

Quick, someone find a video of a person creating this level of origami. I'm lazy so I won't do it.

OrangeWarp 2006-03-04 11:30:49 AM
The "contest" could have just as well been "Origami Exhibit" by Chan. Anyway, I wonder if all of these are made from a single sheet of paper?

Ape Shiat Nuts 2006-03-04 11:30:51 AM
ScreamingInDigital: Nice beaver.

Thank you. I just had it stuffed.

MizzouGuy 2006-03-04 11:31:32 AM
That's all right, that's ok
Cuz we're gonna work for them someday

"In addition to his beaver, Chan submitted this katydid."
and then:
"Chan's newt is also on display."

Is it just me, or is the captionist atttempting to slip in discreet sexual tones?
