Cars don't DUI, drivers do. Tough luck for others that drive the car.

thamike 2006-02-23 10:03:17 AM
Hero? What does this accomplish? Especially in a state like MD where they throw you in the clink for blowing a .04 despite their .08 limit. MADD is turning this into a circus. Even most cops agree that the legal limit is draconian to begin with, since having a .08 BAC doesn't impair you necessarily.

CrotchBeard 2006-02-23 10:19:17 AM
And this will make the lines at the DMV shorter, how?

Alexandra 2006-02-23 10:48:19 AM
Put it on their driver's license. Or make them put a placard in the window of whatever car they're driving.

Good point.

Any time a cop arrests a drunk driver it's a minimum of 2 hours of paperwork and processing. That's why most cops will bypass the borderline drunk and wait for the guy blowing a .14+. There are plenty of those people out there driving on the weekend.

TFA: Taylor considers the DUI plate an ounce of prevention because it gives police a license to stop the driver at any time.

Danger! Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Farking Christ people - I'm a typical suburban-grown white guy, short haircut, job, no record, etc - and this still scares the crap out of me.

"(The bill) will allow (police) to, without probable cause, pull them over and check" their driving records, Taylor said.

At least they admit the purpose of this plate is to violate rights and harrass people, rather than pretending there is any legitimate purpose.

SecretAgentWoman 2006-02-23 11:10:56 AM
I don't believe in public humiliation. Not sure I would go for the driver's license thing unless it was just simply an "alert" that would come up when the police ran the number, as apposed to everyone who views your license knowing your shame (bank, etc).

The license plate just invites harrassment from police and the general public for the driver of the car, wether or not he or she is the lush (could be spouse, etc).

Quackedtheduck 2006-02-23 11:17:30 AM
I also am not pleased about the removal of probable cause this plate entails.

Maybe for drivers that have had 2 accidents could have a plate that says, "WATCH OUT!"

Wow. People get worked up about warrentless wiretaps by the NSA, but getting rid of probable cause and giving that power to a guy with a AA degree and making 40,000 a year gets nothing.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

You guys beat me to the scarlet letter remark. This just gives asshole cops one more excuse to harrass people. One day probable cause will be a distant, fond memory.

I bet they charge the DUI drivers for the pleasure of owning a shiny new license plate too. Just like the $250 substance abuse classes and $40 traffic school that is court mandated. I love it.

Nope. Also, we no longer think of Robin Hood as a hero, he's a criminal now, just like the Sherriff of Nottingham and Good Prince John always said.

The DMV.

You go in there and your like Im gonna go early! Im gonna get ther at 6:01! Hahhaa!

You get there and theres people sleepin in sleepin bags outside.

400 people waiting.

Nobodys talking either.

You walk inside everyboys standin there just dead quiet. Everybodd dead quiet but theyre all thinking the same thing.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

GOOOOOOO!
GOOOOOOO!

You know what they should do?

When you walk in the front door they should have somebody hiding to just punch you in the face.

Because at least afterwards you could be like

Ohhhh Well alright waiting in lines not so bad after the punch in the face.

In the year 3000 everythingll be instant.

Everything just get iinto a teleporter

Bye

*Buzz*

What do I want for dinner

*Buss Ding*

But the DMV will still take like 9 farkin seconds.

9 SECONDS COME ON! I GOTTA BE AT WORK IN 3 SECONDS"

If they go to include DWI, Dick Cheney better not move to Maryland anytime real soon.

If he does, and he gets a license plate with DWI on it, some poor temp at the DMV is going to get shot right in the face.

JoeFarkingCool 2006-02-23 11:23:21 AM
I would rather they hand out license plates that say:
"Does not use turn signals"
"Drives WAY below the speed limit*
"Always talks on the cell phone while driving"

Yeah, I'm also an Ohio Farker - and the yellow liscense plates are more of a joke than a conflict of personal freedom.

Everytime I see one, it just lets me know that person is probably someone I'd like to hang out with.

Agreed. At 2 DUI convictions, license should be revoked forever instead of tagging their car.

I'm suprised the asshats don't try to sue the DMV and the state for embarrassing them. Claiming that the plate will make them drink more and get another DUI charge.

And submitters should get a "already submitted this story" next to their user name for the thread. Whoever greenlit it gets a 5 minute time out. Whoever reads this gets angry. Whoever is in the room with the angry reader gets to hear someone whine and whine. Whoever is in the waaaambulance has to break away from donut break to come to the aid of the whiner, and so on.

Any DUI arrests are already going to come up when the run your license. Or if they click on your name after running the plate.

The whole humiliation thing I can kinda jump on board with because I think less people would do stupid stuff if they were publicly called on it (this is just my opinion and no I don't have statistics to back it up so calm down nancy) but this; "(The bill) will allow (police) to, without probable cause, pull them over and check" their driving records, Taylor said., scares the crap out of me. What if someone else is driving the car and they get pulled over and searched for no reason and the cops happen to find something (weed etc) on them. Does it give the cops an excuse to search anyone driving the car or just the person who commited the DUI?

The Fark "hero" tag is trying to redeem itself.

I'd really like to see DUI drivers' license plates marked in this fashion. Better still, mark them as "murderous asshole."

"Taylor considers the DUI plate an ounce of prevention because it gives police a license to stop the driver at any time."

Frightening.

What happened to the concept of "paying your debt to society." Now, instead of completing your sentence and moving on we mark you so the stigma will remain while subjecting you to the derision, spite, and harrassment of the general public.

They need to go to hell.

Andulamb 2006-02-23 11:28:04 AM
Cars don't DUI, drivers do. Tough luck for others that drive the car.

As others have said, good point. Consider the spouse of the alcoholic who has to use the DUI-branded car for carpooling the neighborhood kids to school one morning.

I am no fan of drunk drivers, nor am I a fan of child molestors, but this "Scarlet Letter mentality" has got to stop. Punish people, rehabilitate them, whatever. But it can't go in indefinately.

And I really don't even understand the concept here. The article quotes some Maryland official as saying, "Taylor said a drunken driver struck him last May, and at the time of the crash, police had no idea that person was a multiple offender."

So?

So what if they didn't know he was a multiple offender? The crash happened. No doubt they checked his record after the crash. What's wrong with that?

If a person is driving erratically, pull them over. If they're not driving erratically, then what's the problem?

Is it "an ounce of prevention" if you pull over someone with DUI plates who is not driving erratically? While the cop is playing Big Brother to someone who isn't doing anything wrong, someone who's truly DUI passes the cop without his noticing.

Sounds like a great plan.
