I've been nervous about the FISA structure since I first looked into it (fall of 2002 or so), I would have been concerned about it during Clinton's presidency had I known about it (though, as people have mentioned, Bush has gone beyond FISA, so it's not the same thing), and I am certainly concerned about what's going on now.

Oh I fully agree with you. I've never really trusted the government since I became an adult, and I'm not sure which frightens me more: that the government feels it has the latitude to pull stunts like this or that most of the American public is complacent enough to let them take latitudes like this. I don't think that says anything any particular individual or administration, I think that says more about me coming to understand how things really work, and that things are going downhill at a rate I never imagined when I was younger.

Do you have any idea how painful it is to learn that the people you read about in history and were taught to idolize as model Presidents were, in fact, asshats of the highest magnitude who broke the law and did some very, very bad things?
