Wow, their servers must suck if they can't handle page refreshes.

Really arcane DDOS attack.

orrinbloquy 2006-01-05 11:20:15 PM
That's really offensive. When he could have just installed RefreshEvery on all the browsers.

He should just had a meta tag for auto refresh and told everyone to log in and sit back.

Save the repetative stress injury...

For the love of the FSM dont press f5 and find out, the admins will ban you for trying to crash the beer soaked servers.

Mouse balls, eh? You're showing your age, bub. I'm pretty sure they're all optical mice now.

Its more embarrassing for the school than a crime by the senior.

Did anyone else wonder just how safe mode could possibly bring down a server?

He should of had a purple gorilla ask everyone for their credit card numbers.

That's a FELONY? Yeesh. I mean, we're not talking about a sophisticated Denial of Service attack.

I got suspended for a day in high school for taking a screen shot of the computer science teacher's desktop and setting it as her background before class began. She than proceeded to decide her computer was busted and call tech support, who told her I was the last one to use it and must have installed a virus.

Don't forget the ever popular "save someones desktop as a wallpaper with secret password" gag.

/also tape over the optical mouse trick works too

The Mac Attack 2006-01-05 11:35:14 PM
Ah, the memories. One of my favourite high school computer lab pranks was to take the mice and keyboard from one computer (without unplugging them - they stretched pretty far) and switch them with the computer beside them. We also did the same thing with a monitor once I believe, and the only way they could've been able to tell something wasn't right was if they were trying to insert a disc. Good times, good times...

desolationrow 2006-01-05 11:35:54 PM
Police say the student, created a website which connected to the school's system.

I'm glad computers are in schools. Now there's ways to severly punish students for trivial matters.

Caps lock on? That's a suspension.
Scroll lock on? We are calling the police and making trumped-up charges that you were trying to bomb the school.

But I was too stoned to come up with the secret password idea. I just logged off, changed the screen alignment on the monitor and hid the log on box.

Just because the students make the computer illiterate faculty look like jackasses doesn't mean they have to freak out so badly.

isamudyson 2006-01-05 11:46:45 PM
Yossarian,

I don't think so. But Wake could take me along to a couple of keggers at his college. He has to be the wingman though.

Mayhem_King 2006-01-05 11:46:46 PM
I've never understood the thing about stealing the mouse balls. It seems to me like a cruel prank and my guess is that most highschoolers lack the requesite surgical skills to do it correctly.

Mayhem_King 2006-01-05 11:48:18 PM
Police say the student, created a website which connected to the school's system.

By connected, do they really mean hyperlinked?

This page has been viewed 890 times!

Mayhem King, you doubt that high schoolers lack experience in grabbing their balls?

raistphrk 2006-01-05 11:50:49 PM
It would be one thing if the kid wrote a website that spawned thousands of connections to the other server, but I hardly think putting a link to a website and telling people to hit F5 is a crime. Stupid, maybe, but not hacking. If they want to prosecute him for some sort of conspiracy charge, that would be a different story, but it's not like the kid initiated a SYN flood using his own network.

fuzzycuffs 2006-01-05 11:51:28 PM
It's only a felony because he incited others to do it. It's the intent, not the action.

If servers can be brought down by a few people constantly refreshing (I'm guessing it wasn't the server's ability to serve pages, but the DSL line it was probably hosted on from the school's cafeteria), that's really pretty sad.

subsailor 2006-01-05 11:52:46 PM
It's a felony to pull stupid pranks?

If so, most submarine crews should be hauled to Leavenworth...

When I was in school, we had a networked Mac lab. I used to send the teacher alerts that read "OK to delete hard drive now?"

The only option available was "OK".

It was great to watch them squirm in their seats, afraid to touch the keyboard or anything. Often they would just turn off the machine by holding in the power button.
