That's quite the most stupid idea I've heard all morning.

It's a good idea. The sane people will simply arrange for their guests to spend the night safely, while the idiots all end up killing themselves.

Last Christmas Eve, when drunk drivers were also given a free night, there were three fatal car accidents, and on New Years Eve there were two. The average day in the capital sees four fatal accidents, according to the Public Safety Secretariat.

See, anarchy works

What could go wrong?

Oh, right. The dead people. And accidents. So yeah, maybe this is a bad thing.

WHY DO YOU ALL HATE FREEDOM SO MUCH!

Where are the Libertarians telling us that anti-drunk driving legislation is just another unwelcome government intrusion into our private lives?

I don't think a million drunks on the road will make the traffic any worse than it usually is in Mexico City.

How about free taxis instead?

Good concept, bad idea.

I honestly would like for something like this. I refuse to drink if I'm getting behind the wheel. Not that I can't handle it (I'm rather "large"), but I'm too paranoid about the "drunk driving" laws around this country.

"You were within 15 feet of a drunk person this evening? Sorry sir, step out of the car."

Drunk Driving laws are like gun control. Punish the responsible people while the idiots keep breaking the law.

Neises 2005-12-19 09:41:52 AM
gwowen: unwelcome government intrusion

That would apply to walking down the street with a beer in hand, and/or public intox without disorderly conduct.

If you find one, you're talking to the wrong libertarian. Of course drunk driving presents a real and unarguable threat to the lives and property of everyone. I don't think any reasonable libertarian (admittedly, a bit under-represented in the party) would argue against drunk driving laws put into place and enforced by local authorities.

On new years eve?

The Mad Cockatiel 2005-12-19 09:45:51 AM
I would guess that many libertarians don't have a problem with pulling over someone that's clearly drunk, weaving in and out of traffic, and threatening other cars, no matter what their BAC.

The problem happens when you get these roadblocks where your choice is "submit to breathalyzer or go downtown." I can't BELIEVE those have held up in court against the amendment prohibiting illegal searches.

MyNameIsDick 2005-12-19 09:47:18 AM
I agree, Innismir. I've been told, by completely sober people mind you, that I drive better after a few drinks. I did a reaction time test sober and then after 4 or 5 drinks and, as counterintuitive as it is, I was markedly faster with the alcohol.

Though I don't think I'd be a better driver after someone's new year's party...

Dr. Frisbee 2005-12-19 09:48:19 AM

The unchecked spread of disease presents a real and unarguable threat to the lives and property of everyone, but I don't see libertarians arguing for locally enforced universal health care.

As ever, libertarianism believes in government to cover what the rich can't buy, and fark everyone else.

gwowen Where are the Libertarians telling us that anti-drunk driving legislation is just another unwelcome government intrusion into our private lives?

Ok, I know its gotta be troll, but I'll bite. What you are saying is anarchist not libertarian. In fact a lot of what gets attributed to the libertarians is the same. Minimizing govt. control is not the same as no govt. Any lib who thinks there is no need for govt. is in the wrong party.

That said, I would like to have a couple of cameras around Mexico City those nights. Would be fun to watch (or horrifying).

They are just waiving the normal $50 bribe that normally gets you out of trouble if you happen to get pulled over. Yes, I have been to Mexico, and it cost us $20 when my husband's co-worker got pulled over (he forgot to bring his ID, any ID, Mexican resident.)

You're confusing health care with Public Health. Paying to stop or prevent epidemics and paying to set other people's broken bones are two very different things.

/probably just alienated some fellow lp'ers too, since public health was unheard of in 1790.

Nacho Libre

Nacho Libre Starring: Jack Black

Nacho Libre Written By: Mike White

They shouldn't but people allow it because "if you did nothing wrong then you have nothing to worry about".

In Germany they have no speed limits, and you can drive as fast as you want. If I know for sure those people out there are going to be stewed to the gills, I am damn sure to be cautious.

the more driving rules there are, the more accidents. strange but true.
