Today's LTP:

Jane kissed Bob, who died a few minutes later. Why?

*chomps on some roasted peanuts*

Mmmm tasty.

Too bad about the allergy thingy.

Does anyone else remember kids having peanut allergies when you were young? I never even remember it being mentioned.

Blackbird [TotalFark] 2005-11-25 12:22:07 PM
I've only heard about peanut allergies until high school, where a girl died using the same knife that was used to spread peanut butter on a sandwich.

Lar [TotalFark] 2005-11-25 12:23:27 PM
Makes you wonder if the genetically engineered peanuts about 20 years ago and we're seeing the result now.

Fnord 2005-11-25 12:38:27 PM
My girlfriend loves the taste of nuts. I'm such a lucky guy!

...what?!

I have wondered the same thing. I think it is probably a result of two things. Medical science has gotten more precise in the last two decades, so a generic cause of death like Acute respiratory failure is further clarified as being brought on by allergic reaction to peanut products, and, stories like this are better disseminated than they were 20 years ago.

Whether or not there is an actual higher incidence of this sort of thing, I honestly don't know, though.

BRUSH YOUR FARKIN TEETH
who wants to kiss a peanut butter mouth anyways? esp crunchy.

Lar: Does anyone else remember kids having peanut allergies when you were young? I never even remember it being mentioned.

First I remember hearing about it was about 1987... and that was an odd one... a friend of a friend died after eating at Arby's. It seems they had substituted peanut oil for the regular vegetable oil at this particular store.

Before that no... and yes, I did take peanut butter and jam sandwiches to school for lunch and no one died.

I'd heard mention, that this type of food allergy (and the severe reaction) was due in part to the onslaught of yuppie parents in the early 80's who figured they knew more than their ancestors and decided to basically quarantine their kids from anything and everything they perceived as "dirty" and constantly follow them around with anti-bacterial wipes and washes.

Heck, we all ate mud and bugs when we were rugroaches... I mean, who here has that kind of severe reactions to peanuts?

Unreasonable hatred for peanut-allergy victims aside, this is the saddest thing I've seen all month.

Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it... but a kiss can be even deadlier if you mean it.

/got nothing
//oh, is that "Navy Seals?"

AnthraxRipple [TotalFark] 2005-11-25 12:58:05 PM
I knew a girl who had a similarly severe allergy to eggs and peanuts. She couldn't eat anything without checking ingredients. Salad bars, etc., were right out. She even said something about the danger of kissing.

OlafTheBent [TotalFark] 2005-11-25 01:01:42 PM
I got in shiat from my kids school for sending in a Granola bar with her lunch... I didn't think, and I'd hate to have another kid get hurt because I forgot that somebody elses kid has a problem.

However, it's not like I sent her to school with a loaded gun... it's farking peanut butter. If your kid has an alergy, then that's your problem isn't it?

I agree. Now at schools, ther are overly conscious about it. At the daycare my kids went to for a bit, the kids weren't even allowed to bring in pb&j sandwiches for lunch because of the offchange that a rebellious peanut might escape the jelly enclosed confines and find its way into someone's mouth. It was farking ridiculous.

you'd think she'd at least be carrying an epi-pen if she was that allergic.

I used to think like you until my 6-month-old had some peanut butter for the first time, her throat swelled up and she almost died. Her face swelled up as well and she looked like she'd just gone 10 rounds in the ring. (I wish I had taken a picture as she just kept on smiling in her usual happy way at everybody in the hospital...Pretty funny.)

/The thing is (as I now know) that peanut allergy is amongst the most common. There's probably a good chance that the daycare didn't want to tempt fate by giving peanut butter to a child who hadn't had it before and might turn out to be allergic.
//Dead children not good for daycare reputation.

Stats are still the same -- there is not an increase in frequency of allergies. But media coverage has increased on slow news days so it seems like it happens more...

>>Does anyone else remember kids having peanut allergies when you were young? I never even remember it being mentioned.<<

I had a similar conversation over Turkey Day with a pediatrician. He's of the opinion that kids' immune systems don't fully develop in many cases due to over-medication by parents and MDs, parents who do everything they can to remove every single germ and piece of dirt out of their child's existence, and possibly environmental factors in many homes. As a result, many kids today seem to be hypersensitive to things in the environment that wouldn't cause problems 15-20 years ago.

Bob was in front of a firing squad, and as a last request, asked for a kiss.

eden express 2005-11-25 02:57:24 PM
(raises hand) I had an allergic reaction from a peanut-buttery kiss.

Fortunately my allergy isn't as severe so I didn't die (obvi!) My lips did get puffy and itchy, so I drank a lot of water and he brushed his teeth.

And then... resume makeout session. bow chicka bow

Greg0ry 2005-11-25 02:57:40 PM
damn....Imagine how this guy feels, you kill your girl freind with a kiss. when it's said it like it sounds likes it was planned.Girlfreind cheats on boyfreind, boyfreind finds out, eats peanutbutter, knocks her off. evil plan. But anyway think of what he has to tell his future girlfreinds, if he has any.

For the last time, it's rogue! The controversial WoW class, the chick from X-Men, the overused term for violent countries with weapons is ROGUE.

That's the only one that annoys me as much as the lose/loose confusion.

I have a friend who is allregic to all nuts, but not peanuts. Because, peanuts are legumes, not actual nuts. How weird is that?

My two nephews ages 8 and 5 have this allergy. Believe me- it's as serious as a heart attack. When we take them to a restaurant or the movies, we need to bring the Epi-pens that provide life-saving adrenalin shots.

It sucks like hell, because they have to eat thier lunch all by themselves in the school cafeteria. Kids are insensitive to this (O RLY?) and throw peanut laden shiat at them.

Cross contamination is the big bugaboo issue. Anyone can avoid the big jar of Jif peanut butter, but what about when Johnny, who's been munching on a big ol' PB&J takes a swig ot of the milk carton and puts it back? Then Billy with the peanut allergies comes along and pours himslef a big glass o' milk out of the same carton. BAM!

It ain't pretty but it sure as hell is real, folks. Get over your petty disdain and self-centered disbelief.

Scott Sicherer, MD, FAAAAI is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Below, Dr. Sicherer addresses some frequently asked questions about Peanut Allergy.

Q: Why is peanut allergy on the rise?
A: Recent studies show that peanut allergy is increasing in prevalence, at least among children. No one knows for sure why this is so. Allergy to peanut is particularly significant because it tends to be a relatively common food allergy, reactions are often severe, the allergy is usually not outgrown, and because peanut is such a common food, it is hard to avoid and accidental ingestion is common. On the one hand, the rise in this allergy may simply reflect the rise in allergic problems in general, such as asthma and hay fever.

Scientists have attributed our current way of life, with "clean living," to this general rise in allergy. In a simple sense, our bodies are not challenged so strongly these days by germs since we have numerous means to reduce our exposure or to treat infections, thereby leaving our immune system "looking for something to do." Our immune system may therefore attack otherwise harmless proteins like those in foods, pollen or animal dander. In regard to peanut allergy in particular, scientists have considered several possibilities such as: roasting peanut may make them more "allergenic," that peanut is in general particularly good at triggering an immune response, and that peanut may be fed to children at a young age before the immune system "matures."
