How do we know the "before" pic is really the unretouched one?

I've seen untouched photos that make her look more demonic. I bet some of her baby pictures are even scarier.

My monitor isn't the greatest, but it looks like they made the white part of her eye whiter, no? Perhaps the photo editor thought the pisture looked too red-eyed? *shrug*

Maybe it looks worse on a normal monitor (mine's painfully dark).

My idea is that they brightened it to use in the print edition, then compressed it for the web, making the artifacts around her eyes stand out even more...
