schools don't call cops on kids who accidentially bring butter knives to school.

This is like the Transformers:

More than Meets the Eye!

No, what you see is what you get. Heavy-handed bullshiat.

Yeah, right. A cop had to be called on a 6-year old. Zero tolerance policies are assinine.

Zero tolerance policies are assinine.

Yep. School adminstrators love them for some reason tho.

Gecko Gingrich [TotalFark] 2005-09-27 07:14:55 PM
Say what you will about the decision, but there needs to be a crappier, lower resolution, more out of focus, less centered so more of the knife is missing from it picture.

This shiat has got to stop.

lesseee....i'm a lazy civil servant close to the top of the pyramid in a unionized job where i'm overpaid considering how little i do or contribute.

why WOULDN'T i love a zero tolerance rule? prevents me from thinking or meeting with aggrieved parents or from having to make any real decisions. I just say "sorry....a butter knife = an uzi = a kilo of heroin" and rubber-stamp the punishment onto his record.

Kid brought a knife to school...case closed.

They can pretend that they are being "fair" by applying the same level of stupidity to everyone. Also, and this is the more important part I think...they don't have to make a decision. Just institute the policy and then point to it each and every time anything remotely approaching a weapon comes up. Drawing of a gun? Zero Tolerance. Sharp stick? Zero Tolerance. Kid has a knife in the locked toolbox of his pickup in the parking lot? Zero Tolerance.

Meanwhile any kid who wants to bring a weapon and use it is going to do it...HE ALREADY MADE THE DECISION TO BREAK THE LAW, IDIOTS.

st_gulik: schools don't call cops on kids who accidentially bring butter knives to school.

Oh yeah? What is this article about? C'mon, it's a BUTTER knife! I could do more damage with a pencil, a baseball bat, or a freakin' textbook!

elevationlord 2005-09-27 07:28:43 PM
I would expel the kid if it was up to me. Knives don't belong in schools, no matter what.

tryptik 2005-09-27 07:30:54 PM
The school now plans to give the boy a one-day in-school suspension as part of its "no tolerance" weapons policy.

A butter knife is a weapon now?

I'm going to take a guess and say that neither of you have kids or have completely blocked out what it was like being a 1st grader.

Why does this kid hate America?

Kid brought a knife to school...case closed.

No, that's bullshiat reasoning. I brought a butter knife to school almost every day when I was in high school. This was after Columbine.

And 9/11.

And all the Anthrax BS that followed.

I also wore a black trenchcoat.

No one said a thing. What has changed?

/It was a bad call, deal with it.

Because it removes "thinking" from the job description.

elevationlord: Knives don't belong in schools, no matter what.

Let's go even further and ban EVERYTHING!!! WE CAN MAKE SCHOOL PERFECTLY SAFE! No more sharp pencils, scissors, textbooks, or anything except nerf!! All your kids will be safe from any harm! Pad the walls!

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2005-09-27 07:36:41 PM

Which is kind of odd when you consider that their job is supposedly to teach kids to think.

And people wonder why our school system is borked.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2005-09-27 07:40:07 PM
if i'm crossing into the USA and I have a pack of rolling papers on me i'd BETTER have a pack of loose tobacco or they'll call it drug parephenalia and (at best) make my life difficult.

maybe the kid should have just brought some butter with him to legitimize his packin' a weapon?

Bexin [TotalFark] 2005-09-27 07:40:14 PM

Teachers, yes. Administrators, not so much. I don't think the teachers like the zero tolerance rules quite as much as the administrators do.

Wrong I have a second grader

I'd hate to be your child then. This is not a "case closed" situation. A butter knife is no more a weapon than a stapler or hole-punch. It also said the kid "accidentally" brought it to school. I don't know about you but when I was in first grade, making sure I wasn't carrying around contraband wasn't first on my mind and "accident" was my middle name.

pudding7 [TotalFark] 2005-09-27 07:52:42 PM
Does the cafeteria not have butter knives?

What about forks? Do they only serve gruel?

Bexin [TotalFark] 2005-09-27 07:54:55 PM
Bareit

This is not a "case closed" situation

With a zero tolerance policy it is. I'm not saying the kid did it on purpose nor that a suspension is warranted, but where do you draw the line...a switchblade?...machete?

grayson 2005-09-27 07:56:15 PM
That's just pathetic. I'm glad the nanny-stating hasn't caught on so much up here in Canada.

Brexin, if I were a nicer guy, I'd pity your child.

There are clear lines to draw and up until about 15 years ago, administrators could make those determinations. Yes, a machete and switchblade would clearly cross that line.

grayson 2005-09-27 08:01:12 PM
Bexin: but where do you draw the line

How about at an actual weapon?

If a kid brings a baseball bat to school, that's fine. But not a butter knife? Can a kid bring nice sharp scissors that are actually more dangerous than a butter knife? You bet.

Zero tolerance policies like these are ridiculous.

how about a knife that's actually capable of drawing blood when wielded by a 1st grader?

grayson 2005-09-27 08:08:31 PM
Ah, sorry for mispelling your name. My point, however, stands. Expelling a kid because his mother/brother/himself brought a butter knife to school is ridiculous. I've known folks with heinously overprotective parents, and none of them are happy people now in their early/mid-20s.

Apology accepted..He isnt being expelled..I am the least overprotective parent I know. All I was thinking was "What if one of my son's classmates brought a knife to class"..Also further up the thread I also said I dont think the child should be suspended. I am however defending the right of the school to suspend children who bring knives to school.

You're defending the right of schools to make snap judgements using a policy that's completely unfair and may irrepairably damage a childs' future. Because something is a law or a policy does not make it right or that it should be blindly followed.

Maybe the word "knife" is what's throwing you off. A better word for the instrument the kid brought to school would be "butter spreader". This is not a deadly weapon or even an instrument that might cause bodily harm unless used in an extreme.

That's apparent. The fact that you would be ok with your child being disciplined for something as minor as this that was also an accident shows the extent or your care for your child.

How many instances of 6yo knife attacks in primary schools are there?

Is it a common thing?

Because if it isnt common, this incident makes the US look completely batshiat insane.

Yes, when it's a FARKING BUTTER KNIFE. Something that can only be loosely referred to as a knife. That IS minor.

Everyone is against zero tolerance until it's their kid on the poking end...

...except soccer moms who are probably lining up to get their little angel in this school...

...and Catholic preachers. (Get it? Poking little kids? Hehe)

Law enforcement was contacted in the case.

Wish they would expand on shiat like this in these articles. Who contacted them? Was it part of their policy or just some bored secretary feeling upity?
