Would it be appropriate to tell the fundies to go fark themselves?

Funny. My father just wanted to drink beer and smack my mom around on Sundays. But hey, different strokes, right?

Rest and worship whether you like it or not?

I hate religion.

Yeah, we'll get right on that whole "shutting down America one day a week" thing.

Right on it.

I don't know about all that 'rest' going on on Sundays. I remember as a kid, all that standing, sitting, standing, sitting we did in church. That shiat was hard. Not my idea of rest. My idea of rest was sleeping until noon, clear through all that musty church crap.

VictoryCabal [TotalFark] 2005-09-22 09:12:59 PM
No one is stopping this official from resting and worship on Sunday. But that isn't good enough. He wants everyone else to conform to his religious views.

You see kiddies, this is what we mean when we talk about freedom of religion and freedom from religion.

I'm sure that if there is a God, he'd be more entertained by a good soccer match than people gathered in a church to grovel and sing out of tune.

EL_FABREZ 2005-09-22 09:17:28 PM
Sweet, I'm gonna make a team of nonchristians and rule that league.

randomuser 2005-09-22 09:19:24 PM
Don't the Jewish attend Synagoge on Saturday? Maybe we should all rest then too... and occasionally the Muslims fast during the day, so we should just cancel work then?

I don't know when the Buddhists meditate, the Wiccans do whatever they do, and the Athiests don't do whatever they do, but we should not play soccer then either?

/if you accommodate one, you need to consider them all

mistersite 2005-09-22 09:20:11 PM
How about we just make Monday the day of rest and not come into work until noon?

That sounds better to me.

Cake Hunter [TotalFark] 2005-09-22 09:20:27 PM
"God our Father intended the seventh day to be one of rest and worship," Leftwich said during a recent city board meeting.

Your God sure is nosey. Maybe He could go play cribbage or something while the rest of us enjoy His creation.

Kind of a threadjack:

Is this the reason why I can't buy beer and liquor until after 1pm on Sunday?

Stupidest damn law evar!

I agree. What happens when I want to get hammered before that first NFL kickoff, but I forget to go to the store on Saturday?

Nothing happens. And it sucks.

Tell that to the 300 mexicans kicking the crap out of balls towards goals with no nets at any given park in DFW on Sunday.

Try living in farking Georgia. Can't buy any booze at all on Sunday, unless you go to a bar. In which case you can either drive home risking a DUI - or call a cab. Nobody calls a cab.

Blue Laws are insane, and as any good conservative should point out, are not the types of laissez-faire regulations a capitalist should support. Blue Laws are restraint of trade due, due to religious interference.

Sunday is the day of rest for Christians - and good deal of 'em get don't rest much once they get out of church, what with the NFL, NASCAR, Golf, MLB, etc. that they have to attend, or watch on TV.

This guy from Tennessee can go fark himself each and every Sunday. Play soccer, boys.

/Jesus hates Christians

Seventh-day Adventists are sure counting on it.

Odd The Viking: Would it be appropriate to tell the fundies to go fark themselves?

always.

ArbitraryConstant 2005-09-22 10:11:28 PM
TFA: "I understand that people have a freedom of choice as to whether or not they attend church, but I still think that we, as a city, should send the right message to the community and restrict the hours of play," Leftwich said.

"I can't force to you to attend church, but I can do my best to make sure there's nothing else to do instead."

The fundies made a successful grab for power and now they think that "religious tolerance" means allowing lax Christians to get away with skipping church once in a while.

Occam 2005-09-22 10:13:45 PM
Before anyone jumps up to whine about mean Fark is to Christians, I'd like to make one simple, and hopefully inarguable point:

There's a reason the founders chose not to institute a national religion.

Thank you.

I thought Saturday was the Sabbath.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2005-09-22 10:41:16 PM
Is all this right wing religion in government bullshiat on the rise or is it just a trend in reporting? I pray to the spaghetti monster that it's the latter.

Mugato: "Is all this right wing religion in government bullshiat on the rise or is it just a trend in reporting? I pray to the spaghetti monster that it's the latter."

Bullshiat is on the rise. Support/tolerance reached a level where fundies stopped feeling the need to reign in their stupid ideas.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2005-09-22 10:57:13 PM
Well this really should be a non-story but unfortunatly as mentioned above, there's precedent with the Blue Laws (the bane of my existence), which are based on religion. But two wrongs don't make a right and this ass clown shouldn't be using the tax payers' time and money on every random senile religious fundie thought that comes into his head.

Anyway, I thought the 7th day was God's day off. He doesn't need a bunch of people in church sending him junk mail on his day off.

I'm torn between hoping it quiets back down and hoping it goes over the top and prompts violent backlash. Issues like this make me hope for extremely violent backlash, and I'd rather not specify what I mean by extremely violent.

krelborne 2005-09-22 11:22:25 PM
"I am concerned that we are not sending the right message to the community by having tournaments and league play during worship hours," Leftwich said.

*dons devil's advocate cap*

Well, I suppose he has a point. Tournaments during worship hours do, in fact, encourage people to ditch church. If he doesn't like that, that's fine, for he is entitled to his opinion. However, he shouldn't be turning to the government to help out. If he wants people to go to church instead of soccer games, he should just talk to the people at the games.

ArbitraryConstant 2005-09-22 11:22:37 PM
Mordant: "I'm torn between hoping it quiets back down and hoping it goes over the top and prompts violent backlash. Issues like this make me hope for extremely violent backlash, and I'd rather not specify what I mean by extremely violent."

Well I hope it's not violent, but I think a backlash is inevitable, and there will be a backlash against the liberalism when it becomes dominant. Hell, this is probably partly a backlash against the liberalism of the 90s.

You guys are crazy.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2005-09-22 11:47:24 PM
It's killing me slowly from the inside that I have to support the liberals for now to beat down the insane religious "conservatives". But it's worth it. I look forward to enjoying time with reasonable religious folks again who aren't fixated on UFIA'ing America with their faith.

Peaceboy [TotalFark] 2005-09-23 12:00:52 AM
Welcome temporarily aboard, Mordant. But be careful, you know what they say. Once you hug a tree you never go back, baby.

Absolutely correct.
Sonny Bono once hugged a tree while skiing.
He never came back.

May the congregation gather around the Bible for a reading of Luke, Chapter 6, Verses 1 through 11.

Jesus deals with a similar situation while the government tells him the EXACT SAME DONKEYCRAP RHETORIC.

Geez. After two thousand years, ain't nothing changed. You can be the Son of God or some kids playing soccer. It don't matter.

I, for one, completely support bannination of Sunday soccer.

And Monday soccer.

And Tuesday soccer.

I think it's the other way around, he's actually trying to outlaw religion...

totalsecurity 2005-09-23 03:17:04 AM
Another misinterpretation of...well whatever it's supposed to be.

"Rest" means "not work", as opposed to other things, like having fun.

Just like the people who say "s/he's in heaven now, looking down..." blah blah blah. Either read and follow the Bible, or don't. The xtian bible says when you die, you lay and rot until whomever ressurects you.

It's a somewhat interesting book, but rather boring until the end. Otherwise, and other than a collection of stories usurped from other, older cultures (and perhaps a guide/control for the masses-as in this example), it's not much use.

I'd prefer to be mummified, or burned.

Tupuli 2005-09-23 03:18:09 AM
Obviously NASCAR, Monster truck events, and gun shows will be exempt.

altrocks 2005-09-23 03:21:22 AM
And on the seventh day he wanked.

Kurland 2005-09-23 03:21:52 AM
Dear Fundies,

Not all of us follow your god. And many of us who do don't follow your interpetation of his's word. There is no national religion in America for a reason. You can stay home on Sunday if you like but you have no right to force the rest of us to.

Go Fark yourselves,
The rest of America

Rutir 2005-09-23 03:23:06 AM
pshaw
Surely the bible is never interpreted in a way that contradicts it.

Roger Arseways 2005-09-23 03:23:40 AM
It's a lame idea to have kids soccer games on Sunday mornings. It must be a pain to go to the liquor store Saturday afternoon, or buy all that beer and keep it in the fridge until game time.

//wait, kids soccer?
//likes to drink at sporting events
//blue laws are retahhhhhhded

Subversive 2005-09-23 03:24:09 AM
Depending on what kind of Christian one is, the "seventh day" could be Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. So I guess the whole weekend is shot.

Rocketnumbernine 2005-09-23 03:24:47 AM
God our Father, Lord Wilson, never intended for heretics to kick sacred religious objects in such games, nor to degrade the image of "Lord Wilson" in Volleyball!

altrocks 2005-09-23 03:24:52 AM
totalsecurity: It's a somewhat interesting book, but rather boring until the end.

Revelations has always been my favorite part of that book. It's the best sci-fi story I've ever read. Worthy of a movie that shows at 3am on a sunday morning on sci-fi (or USA Network) to fill in a gap in the Labor Day weekend marathon.

Roger Arseways 2005-09-23 03:25:04 AM
My weekend is Monday and Tuesday.
