Winamp sucks!!! What is the deal with the whole llama thing?
Window Media Player is better even if it is spyware!

As long as they don't charge for it (sarcasm), and speaking of charging for it... ya know.. TLC...

ryanglenn 2002-04-26 06:56:42 PM

impaler [TotalFark] 2002-04-26 06:57:03 PM
funny, the only thing that keeps getting added to this type of software are ads or some other sort of "connectivity". I'm not upgrading.

Finlay 2002-04-26 06:57:52 PM
When did AOL get their hands on Winamp?
I installed Winamp and got AOL links spammed all over my comp?

tigertigr 2002-04-26 06:57:56 PM
v2.80?? Justin can't code.

fury211 2002-04-26 06:59:17 PM
"Look what made it just in time for Valentine's Day. Just don't wet yourself... Maahaaa!"

hmmm...valentine's day and wetting yourself... I know there's a golden shower joke in all this somewhere.
and WTF IS "Maahaaa!" Was he making a mad cow noise?
damn...

"Just don't wet yourself... Maahaaa!"

Maahaaa see? buy winamp see? Maahaaa! Maahaaa!

VanRoosta 2002-04-26 07:05:37 PM
You know, it's pretty easy to avoid the AOL spam if you pay attention during the install.

Sarcasmo 2002-04-26 07:05:42 PM
No one should be updating winamp unless they expect AOL has anything to offer. The creators announced, at least a year ago, that AOL bought the whole operation and that there wouldn't be any more support for Winamp unless it came from AOL.

b0rg9 2002-04-26 07:06:56 PM
iTunes bl0wz. I like SoundJamMP (v.2.5.3) better for Macs.

DrToast 2002-04-26 07:09:49 PM
whats da point? the changes are obscure that the last 10 "upgrades" probably have made zero effect on how it runs for 99% of people.

Seriously. How much better can this software get. It plays MP3's. Does it give handjobs now?

Asmor 2002-04-26 07:10:37 PM
Winamp owns, and 2.8 only (usefully) adds ogg support.

fury211 2002-04-26 07:11:26 PM
Oh I dunno, I notice all the changes.

/sarcasm

udder_balm 2002-04-26 07:11:46 PM
From Bigtraq:

It is possible to modify an existing mp3 file in such a way that it can carries a virus. The virus is activated when the mp3 file is played in Winamp and can then infect other mp3 files found on harddrives or network shares. In order to protect yourself you need to upgrade to Winamp 2.80 or disable the minibrowser.
Quick workaround if you have a Winamp earlier than 2.80 is to disable the minibrowser. Or you can downloaad 2.80.

shiat. I mean 'from bugtraq.'

Quick1 2002-04-26 07:16:03 PM
Feh. Wake me when they finally release version 3.

b0rg9 2002-04-26 07:20:53 PM
Rebug: I use them everyday at work (kinda backwards using Macs at work and PC's at home). I just like the interface with SoundJam way better. They both use the same algorithm for making mp3's so I use the one that, IMO, is easier to get around and do things with.

WinAmp Rules.

Windows Media Player drools.

SilentObserver 2002-04-26 07:24:29 PM
Does anyone actually use the minibrowser?

CodeBlue40 2002-04-26 07:24:52 PM
Damn this. Ver. 3.0 needs to get finished. Got my mouth all set for a new release of WinAmp and it's just 2.80. Makes no damned sense...

I just hope ver. 3.0 has good skins. Is the template out for it yet?

Dave_bsr 2002-04-26 07:28:35 PM
Actually, if you check the updates (which are included with every winamp release) there are a few interesting updates. Around (looks at updates.txt file) cutting down memory size, cleaning code, fixing weird bugs, stability, speed enhancements, and millions of other cool things. if you're not a winamp person, fine. But "feh" to people who gripe about there being a new winamp - the thing upgrades over time, and has grown to become a great app. It's called "application maturity" and it makes great programs...

Wait. I'm using xmms, in lunix. *wanders off to code*

SteveVT 2002-04-26 07:29:50 PM
This is what I do in my spare time.............

b0rg9 2002-04-26 07:31:41 PM
rebug: Yeah, you're right about SoundJam being dead. I saw that on the update site a while ago. I'll probably use iTunes when that becomes a problem -- or see what features Adaptec Jam offers when we get that at work for audio CD authoring.

None of our machines are going to OS X yet because all the software we run is at home in OS 9.x (audio and video editing, graphics). We have a G4 733 for video work that I'd like to put OS X on, but FinalCut Pro 2 likes OS 9.x.

deathcow 2002-04-26 07:33:14 PM

Maybe my needs are simpler than everyone elses. Winamp has done it's job perfectly for me for MANY versions. That job? Playing shuffled playlists of craploads of mp3's. In the meantime, I keep upgrading and ending up with features I really dont care about - visualizations, a browser window!

So who is this upgrade for? Me, or some bizarre ass new useless feature that Nullsoft thinks I need. Maybe, finally, a spyware version. Nothing would surprise me these days.

uxu 2002-04-26 07:33:35 PM
I would love for someone to make a add-in that would let me play Real Audio streams using WinAMP... I'm soooo sick of the RealOne pop up crap.

bcp01scu05 2002-04-26 07:34:17 PM
B0rg9: Could do a double boot with 9 and X, Apple's worked it out very well.

LupinIII 2002-04-26 07:36:21 PM
anyone remember the first few versions? I love the fact that the GUI pretty much never changed.

Zero Cool 2002-04-26 07:39:52 PM
I have never used the mini browser.. but I will upgrade to 2.80, I am feeling sheepich this afternoon.

I tried BETA3 and I do not like it.

Bad_Sinfluence 2002-04-26 07:42:33 PM
Personally I don't care much for winamp.

SteveVT, is that yours? did you do that on a drum machine or a regular drum kit? That makes me glad my 12 yr old son decided not to play drums after all and just concentrate on Baseball.

b0rg9 2002-04-26 07:42:50 PM
bcp01scu05: Thanks for the info. I'd like to give that a try and introduce the boss to OS X.

SteveVT: Great drum solo -- Thanks!

Grub 2002-04-26 07:44:54 PM
There is no other mp3 player with as many high quality fullscreen plugins IMHO.

LupinIII 2002-04-26 07:45:14 PM
hmm.. better than my work

Bad_Sinfluence:

By not knowing your son's talents in baseball I can only say the following...

I have already been promised full tuiton, and room & board by just playing in band (I am a percussionist, aka a drummer) I don't have to major in anything that has to do with music either.... I am majoring in computer sciences, and all I have to do is play in band... If your son can do this with baseball, yahoo for him (not sarcastic), but if it doesn't pan out, drumming could have been a great way to get through college for FREE.....

I too almost quit to focus on athletics...but i'm glad I didn't.

Diablopop 2002-04-26 07:47:19 PM
SteveVT:
Very nice. Wanna hook a basement producer up with some beats?

BoCoMoFo 2002-04-26 07:47:43 PM
WON'T WORKIE!!!

Boomslang 2002-04-26 07:51:40 PM
LupinIII: You have other releases, or a web site? That piece you linked to is very original.. I like it.. Wouldn't mind hearing more..

Crotchrocket Slim 2002-04-26 07:54:02 PM
Of all the times I've upgraded Winamp, I've never noticed a difference between the versions. They've fooled me from going from 2.74 to 2.79, they won't get me to 2.80. Unless they include pr0n in the download, then I might upgrade.

MachineHead 2002-04-26 08:02:57 PM
Winamp is more efficient and has far better visualizations than Windows Media Player. It's legions ahead for MP3 playing.

For video, it's the exact opposite, but there isn't even room for discussion as far the MP3s goes...

LupinIII 2002-04-26 08:03:49 PM
boomslang: I'm currently not working on anything new, and I really haven't released much of anything that deserves any merit. I found out after making that song that it's a carbon copy, pretty much, of MC Hawking.. check him out on mp3.com if you want more like that. :)

I'm getting a new studio setup soon, so hopefully i'll start producing more "music."

Stugatz 2002-04-26 08:04:21 PM
the only reason they used to upgrade winamp was so you would have to put in a different registration code (i.e. go download the latest crack from your favorite warez site) too bad they are going to start charging again, I guess they never learned that it didnt work the first time.

Bad_Sinfluence 2002-04-26 08:09:47 PM
Johaxin2, He does very well at baseball, he started drums in band and the snare alone was enough to drive me nutz almost. I guess investing in earmuffs or an external garage would help. I am sure he would excell good at drums too. As far as college money he took good care of that by getting a broken leg by a drunk driver. although a full tuition would leave him the money to spend where he would rather, like a new firebird or vette...
