We would make these during summer camp but without the tail. They are very nice and one of the best designs.

I was at a college basketball game last year, and they had a paper airplane throwing contest, where if you hit a target, you win a prize. You could immediately tell where the engineering majors were sitting.

/why is there voting?

paperairplanes?? do you mean like the A350 or B787?

ahahhahahaha... weak aerophile humour

It's only 35 steps to do.

When I was 17, I went to an NBA game and threw a paper airplane from the nosebleed section. It floated so smoothly and beautifully across the arena and over the court. The entire crowd must have seen it b/c I saw thousands of people pointing and the place got louder. The only person who didn't see it was the woman that it was heading straight for on the other side. It embedded itself right into her boufant hairdo.
The place erupted in laughter.

Indoors while racing supercross I liked to use the circular airplane design. It handled the weird air currents of the stadium better.

dougmc 2005-07-30 04:09:12 PM
The craft then began to lower as if it were a helicopter and gently came to rest on the asphalt below.

This the the author's idea of `it was acting like a REAL airplane'? Remind me never to fly with him!

It gently curved into the slight breeze and began to rise vertically without moving forward. The craft then began to lower as if it were a helicopter and gently came to rest on the asphalt below.

Sounds like he throw it into a slight breeze and thermal. Hardly rocket science, not Earth shattering, but sorta neat if you can do it.

A vote for me is a vote for, um,
finding good lift on your first launch!
(If only I were better at it.)

yeah so uh...why does my plain keep imploding after step 19? how the HELL does it catch on fire?!

any help would be appreciated.

I build it, and it actually works quiet well. Before launching, I recommend checking very carefully to make sure the wings are symetrical.

I won a paper airplane comp in public school. Used a "flying wing" design that I found in a book.

The prize was a chocolate bar. Mr. Big if I remember correctly.

Oh, and if you vote for me, I promise to think of you while pleasuring myself tonight!!

StoneyBologna 2005-07-30 04:47:17 PM
My friends and I used to make TONS of paper airplanes of all sizes...from tiny notecards to giant paper posters...we had the entire Spanish class throw it at our biatch of the teacher. I dubbed it the Lufftwaffe (SIC, not a lot of time right now)

ExtremeTomato 2005-07-30 04:53:19 PM

It flew ok until it got stuck behind my desk

Flamadiddle Rocket Scientist 2005-07-30 04:53:28 PM
Bull craaaap. This is a paper airplane for the non-purists. I make ALL mine without cuts and/or fasteners. Those methods are for cheaters.

ender.othc 2005-07-30 04:53:40 PM
I made one and it works well... you don't launch it like a normal paper airplane... aim it a bit at the ground and then it works very well.

Kalior 2005-07-30 05:08:04 PM
I just finished mine, but I'm afraid to throw it in the office. (I would hate to tag my boss with it)

you said it.

and i'm still stuck in some weird netherworld between step 17 and step 18.

i'm about to burn my workplace to the ground because of it.

built mine, flies alright... the instructions should give more info on where to place the cuts for the tail stabilizers. also the pictures should not have been taken with a white background. still, good instructions overall.

/goes back to doing loops

This design is similar to your standard "hawk" dart, just with a sighly different main body and a tail assembly used by other gliders. The only reason I'm geeking on this is I'm a big fan of making paper planes and launching them off of roofs and other high places. I have a book called Super Simple Paper Airplanes by Nick Robinson, and for a cool flight, try the Level Track Delta. For those of you with cigarette papers laying about, the book also has a model called Fold Your Own. Not suprisingly, they tend to zig-zag.

I'm with you, Flamadiddle Rocket Scientist. Why not just glue the thing together instead of folding at all, goodness. This plane is ridiculously hard to make, mostly because of the ever so excellent animations and photos. And then I get to the point where I'm supposed to lick the paper like some sort of pot-head hippie! Goodness! You know what licking's for? It's for when you're to poor to afford scissors. I quit in rage when I find out, 73 trees into the airplane, that it requires cheating. World's Best Paper Airplane, sheesh. I had a computer program with a similar name with MUCH better planes. No cheating for almost all of them, either. If you haven't built it yet, don't bother. I have a huge stack of papers I had crumpled in anger, and that was with the Cheers Theme Song blaring.

Wow, I was thinking of the exact same thing.

llDuffManll 2005-07-30 07:39:08 PM
I made the plane, but it didn't fly well. Too delicate, the tail is weak. It kept climbing too much and fine tuning it is difficult because front portion is pretty rigid while the tail is very soft, I really doubt this thing can hold its own in a moderate breeze.

I'll stick to my original design that I learned when I was four, a simple five step plane that is rock stable and flies very well.

Flies pretty well. I still like my flying saucer airplanes better. Less consistant but freakier looking. I'd draw up instructions, but i'm just too lazy. Put the paper sideways, take one top corner and bring it down so it makes a pair of points at the bottom, then take the top (not pointy) edge and fold it down tightly several times. Then roll the whole thing into a crown shape, putting one end of the roll into the other, and bending that a bit so it stays together. Flip it lightly from the two points in the back. Weeeee!!!! Extra credit if anyone can understand what I'm saying and post a picture of one.

Raptor_1.4G 2005-07-31 01:13:00 AM
Mine seemed to fly better with out the tail. Using a whole other piece of paper for the tail might give it some more weight and strength in the back so it won't nose dive as much?

KidneyStone 2005-07-31 01:27:13 AM
HoratioGates: flying saucer airplanes better

You can also make great flyer like that out of beer cans. Cut the top out (like you would a soup can, old military P38's do a great job) and then trim the length of the can to about 2" from the 'rolled' top edge. Throw like a football (aka: Spin it)

They rock and fly a long ways.

Here are my very technical blueprints:

//a vote for me is a vote for stitches

Am I the only guy here that was making these when I was 10 years old. The dude seems to think it is a NASA inspired invention or somthing. They are cool but I figured it out with ZERO help when I was 10. I am still a dumbass therefore it can't be that complicated.
