#3 is farking outstanding!

onecanshort [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:25:10 PM
Very cool, although I'm kinda sketchy on the 1st one still. Number 2 isn't all that impressive. Three however is fanfriggin tastic.

albo [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:25:18 PM
i'm so freaked out.

Epsilon [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:27:50 PM
That's freaky. I was very doubtful about the first one, so I did a screen capture and opened the image in Photoshop. Measuring the A and B squares with the color tool does indeed confirm they are exactly the same color. Weird!

mryoop789 [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:29:15 PM
WOW!

hinten [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:30:32 PM
No wonder I dressed myself this morning wearing two different colored socks!

ApocoLypstick [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:30:52 PM
Props to Epsilon for testing it. Pretty cool stuff, although my eyes hurt now.

TheRealist [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:31:32 PM
I think I picked the wrong day to stop putting LSD in my eyes. neat

SpeedyTurkey 2005-07-29 01:32:05 PM
Pretty cool. Its still hard to think the 3rd one works, because I keep thinking they are still slightly different. But very interesting, anyway.

Jules_Winnfield 2005-07-29 01:35:55 PM
Number 3 is cool...if you just stare at the one on the left when you slide the mask away, it keeps that darker color...and then just glance at the yellow back ground and that dark color on the right almost changes to yellow before your eyes

/or at least before my eyes

rrtt22 2005-07-29 01:36:07 PM
I'd like to see some kind of explanation of how this work.
How can grey and yellow be the same color on three. it makes no sense. This should be greenlighted

bboy [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:36:33 PM
Awesome!!

Postal Penguin 2005-07-29 01:37:48 PM
So thats why I run the red lights. The yellow colored stop light makes me percieve red as green. Try giving me a ticket now!

nekom [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:40:18 PM
That just crushed my entire beleif and value system, and turned my life upside down. Thanks alot, submitter!!

dletter [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 01:50:34 PM
rrtt22.

They are the same color, you only think you see yellow on the right sided one. Its really that grey color.

The first one is one of my favorites, but, all 3 really show how our eyes perceive things differently depending on what is surrounding it.

AlexDeGruven 2005-07-29 01:51:08 PM
rrtt22:

It's not the colors themselves, it's the way your brain percieves them in relation to the surroundings. It works the same way as the grey squares in #1, except rather than shading, the intereference is colors.

I'm betting that if you looked at a histogram of the two sides of image #3, they'll come out with the same net levels, just of different colors (except for the joint, that is).

The reason the mask works is because you're then ONLY looking at the colors of the center pieces, and you're manually filtering out all of the other perceptive interference. It's how Optical Illusions work.

cannotsuggestaname [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:02:16 PM
the right cross joint in number three looks yellow to me with or without the mask. Admittedly it looks /less/ yellow with the mask on, but it is still yellow. Perhaps my monitor (or my eyes) are playing tricks on me?

I have seen illusion 1 before, and it still is impressive to me. Illusion 2 wasn't that impressive and is something that I can easily understand.

Karmacidal [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:02:31 PM
#1 impressed me more than #3. Cool.

nekom [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:05:53 PM
I still can't BELEIVE #1, I think it is one of the most impressive color-related illusions I've ever seen.

the_rev [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:06:19 PM
To me, the things in #3 both look grey...one just looks a bit darker than the other.

mediaho 2005-07-29 02:08:11 PM
Never trust your eyes. They're farking liars.

the_rev [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:08:52 PM
That piece in #3 doesn't look yellow to me at all. Either my monitor isn't rendering the colors the right way, or my red-green colorblindness keeps me from seeing the illusion.

cannotsuggestaname [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:10:35 PM
mediaho: They're farking liars.

great, now I have that Rollins Band song going through my head.

mediaho 2005-07-29 02:13:22 PM
cannotsuggestaname: great, now I have that Rollins Band song going through my head.

Having the song in your head is better than having the video in your head. Now all I see is a half naked, middle aged, angry man painted red, damn it.

cannotsuggestaname [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 02:15:23 PM
and now I have it too. Thanks so much mediaho.

First Ricky gave /it/ to me, and now mediaho. Can today get any better?

:D

ArcadianRefugee 2005-07-29 02:33:52 PM
Very cool, although I'm kinda sketchy on the 1st one still.

if you don't believe it, copy the image into Adobe (or Paint shop Pro) and do a color picker -- they'll register the exact same RGB.

Godzilla [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 03:47:52 PM
Freaky!

Neospartan 2005-07-29 04:31:51 PM
Yeah, I checked #1 in PS too. It blew my mind. #2 was kind of anticlimactic after #1. And on #3, the center pieces still look different to me (a little) with the mask on. They are both basically grey, but there are different highlights it seems.

Will N. Dowd 2005-07-29 05:30:29 PM
If you like the sort of optical illusion that can make you just about barf, this one's for you (284k). It was listed on Fark a while back and is one of my favorites.

Quick1 2005-07-29 06:55:34 PM
Another cool optical illusion is one that's at the local Science Museum. It has a couple of objects placed at a specific distance, so that when you are focused on one, the other disappears completely, showing where the blind spot in your corneas are.

Ang6666 2005-07-29 07:08:50 PM
These are always very kewl. :)

And to add a little twist, just shows how the world is not really all black and white, as some would like you to believe.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 07:24:34 PM
This changes everything. My life will never be the same.

nyihockey 2005-07-29 08:47:46 PM
Ive seen #1 and #2 before, and they arent that difficult to see. But that third one is just farked up. I thought no way, until I pulled that mask down... just amazing

shanrick [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 09:22:51 PM
shopped

EtherGnat 2005-07-29 11:07:56 PM
#1 I had seen before and it was my favorite optical illusion of all time--at least for sheer I don't believe it even after I've seen the proof with my own eyes.

#3 might replace it as my favorite. I didn't believe my eyes, I didn't even believe my color picker. I had to load it in to photoshop and cut the center section out and move it back and forth to believe it, and I *still* don't believe it.

Amazing.

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2005-07-29 11:59:51 PM
I want to see an optical illusion that makes the Cincinnati Reds look like they're in first place.

dadigits 2005-07-30 12:01:39 AM
Dammit. So my eyes are useless now, huh?

I will never judge a woman based on looks again. Or at least I'll bring one of those masks with me.

j79 2005-07-30 12:01:45 AM
Seen # 1 - freaked me out the first time I saw it. Took it into photoshop to confirm (they're both the same tone)

Number three, however, is new for me...absolutely amazing...

Dolphin 2005-07-30 12:03:18 AM
I call shenanigans!

It's witchcraft! Burn them!

Immaculate_Misconception 2005-07-30 12:06:38 AM
The colors of the 'A' and 'B' in number one have more to do with the illusion than the shading IMHO.

1 & 2 were cool, but 3 just didn't happen for me.

nytmare 2005-07-30 12:09:08 AM
How fair is it when the labels (A and B) contribute to the illusion?

Rascal, posting the same joke in every single thread gets old fast. fark off.

Obscure 2005-07-30 12:10:10 AM
Wow... now I have a hard on.

treesloth: It's witchcraft! Burn them!

I agree. Grab your pitchforks and torches gentlemen, we've got ourselves some witches to burn. But first we need a really big flame, anything Bush related happen today?

NoMessiahInHere 2005-07-30 12:10:53 AM
IIRC, the effect is due to lateral inhibition of cone photoreceptors (cells) in your retina. The cone photoreceptors respond to 1 of 3 pigments and are what allow us to see color. The problem is that the number of photoreceptors is greater than the number of individual nerve lines running from the eye to the visual cortex. I don't know all the neuroscience behind it but it has to do with the signal getting washed out as it travels from the retina to the visual cortex. I'm sure some wonky grad student in neurobiology can help fill in the gaps here.
