Why would case modders surrender, considering that this was made by Zapwizard, a well known and very talented case modder from bit-tech.net?

Looks damn nice though :)

That must have been a biatch. Especailly the tabs on the back.

No thanks. My grandpa always told me, "don't take any wooden iPods."

Sinn: Why would case modders surrender

Yeah, from the guy that brought you the wooden shuttle computer, wooden keyboard, wooden 10 key pad, wooden mousepad, and wooden screen.

/lazy bastard needs a wooden mouse too

wow- that is a beaut! I wonder how difficult (if at all) it would be to use the scroll pad though.

If he sold them (in mini sizes) i'd prolly get one. Just would need a wooden case for the iTrip.

l.i.m.b.o.t.h.e.l.a.w 2005-07-05 06:37:50 AM
It looks really pretty and I bet it feels great compared to plastic!

/love to feel my wood

Gig103 [TotalFark] 2005-07-05 06:40:28 AM
Pretty cool, but how does the scrollwheel work, considering he modded a 4th gen, which didnt have moving parts (gen-2 i could see this working easily)

Wow, with that mod, you'll be THE talk of airports, Starbucks, and public transportation everywhere!

Gig103 [TotalFark] 2005-07-05 06:53:07 AM
Thanks nick!!!

I'm really impressed that the clickwheel works through the wood finish.

Haven't apple sued yet? I'm sure he's infringing on some trademark/vapourware/paranoid delusion of theirs...

Beautiful woodwork, wasted on a piece of crap iPod - somebody notice me, aren't I cool? Oh, please!

Cool though this is, one day Fark will feature a tech/geek story that hasn't already been done to death on Slashdot

/moan moan, grumble grumble

MayoBoy 2005-07-05 07:08:30 AM
Ewwwwwwww - that finish is horrible. If you're going to work with padauk, at least do a nice french polish or hand rub some varnish. That 1/4" thick coat of epoxy looks terrible.

Otherwise nice technical work.

/wonders if the inside is finished as well - otherwise at 2mm thick, that thing's gonna warp like nobody's business.

Pretty cool, but how does the scrollwheel work

The scrollwheel is covered in plastic as standard, the prox sensors probably work fine through a slightly thicker insulator, commercially available proximity sensors work from film insulation up to several mm of insulator.

Maybe his next mod can be to remove the DRM and repeal the DMCA.

Gotta ruggedize it. It wouldn't look so good with finger grease marks and scratches all over it. It doesn't look as good though, tis true.

Does this remind anyone else of Chia Pet Mackenzie's "Sandbenders" computer from Gibson's Idoru? With all the buttons etc. hand-made from stones and shells and wood.

Artster 2005-07-05 07:58:49 AM
C'mon...that's not REAL wood. It's laminate....

Nice work!

That's the thing. Every surface is going to scratch, but you can't repair that plastic finish. Shellac and varnish can be fixed quite easily.

SherKhan 2005-07-05 08:33:10 AM
What's more, he hand carved and coded the hard disk platter from an ordinary chunk of magnetic ore with an xacto-knife and a pin.

Very cool mod, my ass-hat's off to this craftsman/artist/tinkerer.

From the people who thought wood panelling on everything was cool.

BTW, it's not, but good work nonetheless.

When working my padauk, my old girlfriend would ask me if I would prefer a french polish or a hand rub.

. . . I miss her

No, it's real carved wood. Only the wheel is a veneer (But still a real wood veneer!). Go see the link nick4753 posted.

"This entire project was done by hand using a Dremel rotary tool."
That is sick. If I did that it would come out looking like homer simpsons wonderbat.

Personally I think Ipods suck ass are too $$ (although cheaper now), and most people buy them so they have a fancy little something to wear at the gym/coffee joint.

Stupid trendy motherfarkers... I want one now... in wood

chenry 2005-07-05 09:07:21 AM
that's pretty slick

Aren't all Apple products made of wood?

I can certainly appreciate the quality of craftsmanship, but I just don't like the look of it. :(

Maiatico 2005-07-05 09:28:11 AM
so... is it made from touch sensitive wood?

bluenovaman 2005-07-05 09:28:16 AM
If Ipods suck as bad as so many of you farkers say what is a good alternative?

jdnugent 2005-07-05 09:30:04 AM
The added expense of having to spray for termites seems like a drawback...

Gunhead 2005-07-05 09:32:28 AM
I think it's pretty cool. Certainly different and cooler than anything else I've seen for the iPod. And I agree with Bluenovaman: If the iPod sucks so much, (which it doesn't!) what is the alternative?

FnckYon 2005-07-05 09:42:55 AM
GIS for 'alternative to iPod' (not really)

What DRM is that? The DRM that's in the iTunes music store files that Apple doesn't force you to buy or use at all?

Files on the iPod aren't DRMed... they're normal MP3s in hidden folders

The Damned 2005-07-05 09:46:14 AM
iRiver, Creative Labs Touch, that Toshiba Gigabeat...

bridgeboy13 2005-07-05 09:52:25 AM
Hah, for 160$ (and that's CDN$), the price of an average new 1 gig mp3 player, I got a 15 gig 3 generation ipod, complete and perfect.
I was impressed enough to go back to the dealer and picked up another ipod, 10 gig, 140$cdn, for my girlfriend.
Buy used if you can from a decent dealer, then it's worth it!

oldfarthenry [TotalFark] 2005-07-05 09:56:05 AM

Attention whores of the tech world.

You just keep telling yourself that, Apple fanboy, and maybe one day it might be true. It will be a cold day in hell before Apple tells me how many times I can encode, rip, burn, or copy a legitimate music file that I own, or tell me how many computers or which digital music players I can use my own files on.

elendilmir 2005-07-05 10:02:47 AM

I got some touch sensitive wood for ya.

More ramblings from a Mac-basher that doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

It is true. It's very easy to get files off of an iPod; you just have to have the program to do it. It's not DRMed, just hidden. I transfer music back and forth from my iPod to my four computers all the time. If Apple made it that easy to get music off of one, you'd have people giving each other copies of their 60gb song libraries. Whether you like it or not, that's illegal.

Apple doesn't specifiy anything about how many times you can rip, burn or copy a legitimate music file. The only files that have any kind of protection are songs from the iTMS, and that's true of any music purchased online from any online music store. If you want to be able to play it on something other than an iPod, then buy it from some other music store.

SherKhan 2005-07-05 10:08:48 AM
Goodness gracious fortitude
You've been forced to buy tracks dude
From the iTunes Music Store
Or are you trying to flame war?
Don't like it fine then just don't buy it
You're a hater don't deny it.

elendilmir 2005-07-05 10:13:01 AM
Oh for heavens sake. All this has been covered at ipodlounge. Or better yet, pick up a copy of anapod. Lets you use it like a big ol hard drive, and lets you correct record companies questionable tagging procedures to boot. I can't tell you how many ways you can spell Blue Oyster Cult over 25 years. The Ipod is a great piece of equipment. I can't really speak for itunes. It's just too expensive. 0.99 per track is about the cost of an album for crying out loud.

Oh yeah. That's a damned fine bit of modding. Well done.
